Question for vets and those sleeved longer than 6 months
gmanbat replied to Beach Lover's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had losses, gains, and stalls but I averaged my weight loss by the formula...pounds lost divided by days out of surgery. Almost a pound a day at first then it went down to .3 pounds a day, then .1 pounds a day. But the thing is..on the average it still was going down. It got real slow right around my goal weight. Now I am 8-10 pounds under goal weight. I concentrated much more on exercise than I did on weight loss, turned myself into a lifelong athlete. I have quit working out now, my daily work with my nephew in the dock building business is far beyond workouts. I seldom weigh myself but I notice that my saggy skin appears to be tightening up a bit. My muscles are rock hard. -
Grrr..get it straight! Its Vertical Gastrectomy NOT bypass!

We are not talking about a backyard mechanic fixing an old car, this is your body and your life. If your doc doesn't know what the heck he is talking about demand that he find out what he needs to know or look elsewhere. It is not up to us to give him an education. If so, I would charge him about $1000. an hour. -
My wife and I both had a hankering for some fruit pie but of course avoided it because of the sugar content. To our delight our grocer had a beautiful sugar-free cherry pie which we promptly purchased. At lunch we left room for sliver pieces of the succulence which we chewed slowly with rapturous expressions. Later, at Home Depot, the rest of the story was heard. Both of us began to do a sonic imitation of a flock of geese. It was a looong migration. It is difficult to do any careful shopping when "blow and go" is your method of avoiding embarrassment. The customers that remained that day were the ones who were truly serious about home improvement. Sugar-free confections contain the stuff that dreams are made of...nightmares.

To kill the bugs or the crops? Could have done either or both. -

I would be much happier with a doc who said,"Let me do some research and I'll get back to you". Covering up a lack of knowledge to keep up the Marcus Welby image turns me off. It is lazy and dangerous. Someone who imagines they already know everything they need to know has no wiggle room for thinking, growth, or competence. -

If you use your arms while talking don't be surprised if folks have their hand on their heart.

I will join your rant. Being awash in ignorance is semi-understandable in common yokels but in a doctor it is inexcusable. We have an illusionary vision of doctors keeping up with research and reading journals. In truth some get diplomas and slide just like in other professions. That certificate on the wall in the fancy frame would find more purpose at the bottom of a canary cage. In fact, due to the seriousness of the situation some are a danger to society. A recent experience with my aged brother-in-law is a case in point. I took him to his doctor because he was falling and dragging his foot. The doctor told him he was just getting old and sent him out after collecting his money. We later took him to an emergency room which immediately ordered a helicopter to take him to a good hospital. He, just in time, received brain surgery for a dangerous buildup of blood. He is slowly recovering. Many doctors are the real thing. Some are jerks. Look through the myths. If they don't even know the difference between the bypass and VSG you don't need their advice. -

What are some of the comments you get?

Ask your boyfriend if cutting out 80% of his stomach and dragging it out through a slit in his belly sounds easy. How about a stapler working on his insides. This, the most frequent objection to this operation, is also the most asinine. -

A question for veterans about coffee..
gmanbat replied to JessicaAnn's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Too much coffee is an acid issue for me. Not enough coffee is a grumpy issue. -
We are blessed to have a genius cook for a niece who lives in a beautiful Florida lake house a half hour from us. She loves her aunt and uncle and always invites us to share holidays with her family. She is into organic and healthy but always manages to have an outrageously delicious spread of roasts, ham, green bean casseroles, pumpkin rolls, squash casseroles, stuffing, gravy, dinner rolls, and surprises. The entire family knows about our wls lifestyles and understand the microscopic dabs of food on our plate. Jet skiing, boating, lolling on the private beach, and swimming in their pool afterward. A big plus is their adorable grandkids.

It took me a year to lose 100 pounds. I had lots of stalls. I laughed at them and they went away. Time and science is strong kung fu. -

Ahhh...wine. My experiment was with vodka. I've had sweet homemade wine before that went down way too easy...made a right fool out of me in front of my girlfriend's family. -
Reading something about an experience and imagining how it would be is a world of difference from actual experience. The thing becomes 3 dimensional and stares you in the face. That's when you apply your research and go to war. You are doing good, youthguy80, your brain is working and your body will benefit no matter how loudly it protests.

Today after a hard morning of work the boss took us to Beef O'Brady's. I ordered a salad and a half of a Cuban sandwich. The salad went down mighty easy and I even ate some of the bread with the yummy Cuban sandwich along with the meat. The quantity was more than I normally eat and I had no discomfort. I consider that they were sliders. The "stretch bellies" who were with me ate vast quatities and I had to dig into my water/lunch bag and retrieve my ever-present antacids for one of them. As for booze, I don't see how it is possible to abuse it with the sleeve. The thing doesn't hold enough for a decent buzz and booze irritates. "The Bouncer" wouldn't put up with it. -
Terrified to tell Mother/MIL about WLS. Need suggestions.
gmanbat replied to MetroDetroitChic's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Oh, sorry. I noted in your title that you were "terrified". That sounds like a bit too much fear and a problem for you. I was trying to help you get around that. I know you are looking for clever things to say to calm her down. I will leave that to someone else. If my mother went off on me I would just let her rant and probably laugh at her. I have always been somewhat difficult to control and can't understand folks that let others box them up, even relatives. -

I have a 37 year old daughter who has 2 wonderful daughters. She asks my advice at times but goes ahead with her life as she sees fit. This is as it should be. If she wanted me to run her life for her I would consider myself a failure as a father. I would think that I created an emotional cripple. Look down at your belly. Do you see a cord there with the other end attached to your mother? If not then you are not dependent upon her. Her control over you is what you allow. If she bases the continuation of your relationship on your obedience to her every thought and prejudice she is the child here. Be kind to her but don't let her inability to cope limit your life. Having her talk to the surgeon may help unless she contradicts him and tries to override his advice as well. Surgeons don't like that. -
Radical it is, a cop-out it is not. It is not easier as you will see, it is just much more effective. It IS much easier than being obese. Good for you! I made my change at 63. I am 64 now, a year and half out, under my goal, strong as a bull, and enjoying life. You can do it!
