trying out food while in the liquid Diet
mick replied to azwin's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Why fool around and take a chance on damaging your sleeve? It was strongly impressed on me to not take chances. Give my stomach plenty of time to heal. This takes weeks not days. Just because you don't feel much pain does not mean you can't damage your sleeve. -
I am trying to think of something encouraging to say but all that comes to mind is "May God keep His hand on you and you have a speedy recovery."

Where do you get your bariatric supplies?
mick replied to mamaofmatthew's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The only "bariatric supplies" I use is my Protein shakes from costco or Sam's Club. -
I know slow & steady wins the race but.....

I've only lost 22 lbs post op and we had surgery on the same day so I am jealous. -
My favorite was chicken breast pureed with "Better than Bouillon" chicken broth. Full of flavor, which i craved more than the food itself. My wife also made a chicken Soup with carrots, celery and potatoes and chicken Then pureed it. Yummy! Homemade split pea soup really good too. Tried the baby foods but they were awful!

I went through 12 weeks of classes and was expected to lose 10% of my weight. Gained three or four pounds! But...when I started my two week liquid diet I lost a lot more than 10%. You will feel so good about yourself when you get past this point. You sound stronger than the average person and are probably a lot harder on yourself than most. Give yourself a break and just make up your mind to forgive yourself and move on. Hopefully you will be encouraging others in just a little while.

Sugar addict and Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (VSG) surgery?
mick replied to Quest4TheNewMe's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sounds like y'all need to join your local SA. (Sugarholics Anonymous) -
This forum is a great place for you to hang out. Here you can gain confidence in your upcoming surgery and learn what to expect from the very beginning. I see a lot of questions asked over and over on here. If you do a little searching you will find such a huge variety of subjects covering so many of our experiences and some of them are bound to mirror your own at different phases of your journey. This has helped me to understand that a lot of things are normal and nothing to get discouraged about. I am looking forward to encouraging you and I know others are to. Just get'er done!

I don't like not drinking either but I was taught that drinking while eating would limit your intake because you can only hold so much at a time and you need to get your Protein in before anything else. Also you will eventually stretch your stomach. I do know that when I try to drink to soon after i have eaten it causes a pressure that makes me worry about stretching my stomach. I am not going through this just to get back to my old eating habits. I take these warnings serious especially when my body confirms them by making me really uncomfortable.

Mine were glued too but they also had some kind of tape that eventually came off after a few showers. I can't remember but I think i pulled some of them off after they started coming loose.

I eat whenever I am hungry. Mostly Protein. I also drink a lot of fluids in between which, a lot of times, takes away that hungry feeling. Works for me. In fact i have to remember to eat.
-
FYI, The pre op diet helped me taper off on my food intake and was easier for me because i knew that i would not be able eat hardly anything for a few weeks post op. I pray that those of you that don't have pre op liquid diets don't have too hard of a time eating nothing, all of a sudden. The good news is that you may not be hungry at all post op. I was not hungry for a few days and gradually felt like my body was trying to tell me i needed to eat something to survive even though i was not hungry. Another thing i like about the sleeve is that now when I feel like i am really hungry (starving), just a little bit of food satisfies me.

Phooey! You will be able to eat ice cream in just a few weeks! I had some last night and not for the first time Quit torturing yourself! I don't remember how many food funerals I had pre-op. "Last time i will be able to have this or that." Looking back now, it is really funny.

I really like this guy! Beginning with my initial appointment he has remained so patient and attentive to my questions and concerns. My wife and daughters were a little anxious for me and expressed their concerns to me about going through with this gastric sleeve surgery but Dr. Naik's confidence helped me make the right decision and relieved my anxieties. I could not ask for a better aftercare program. His support is invaluable to me. He has given me 24 hr access to him. I wish I had had this kind of attention and aftercare when I had my heart surgery a few years ago. http://bakersfieldsurgicalassociates.com/about_nnaik.html I have Kaiser but he is not a "Kaiser doctor" but he does take Kaiser insurance.

At that stage I loved cooked chicken breast pureed with chicken broth (Better than Bouillon). It was so delicious! My wife got me these tiny little baby spoons and each little bite was just sooooo good! These stages go by pretty fast, looking back. Just remember that you are letting your stomach heal right now. Don't rush it or get discouraged. Let it heal real good and then you will learn how and what you can eat. Everyone is a little different. My written instructions were pretty slim but the words "as tolerated" gave me something to work with.

I am almost 8 wks out and I can eat about 3/4 cup of soft foods. My favorite "meal" is 3 slices of deli sliced turkey or chicken breast rolled up with a slice of cheese in the middle. Fills me up and i can eat on the go. Every now and then i eat a tiny bit of mashed potatoes w/gravy and some meatloaf or whatever kind of meat.for dinner. I am mostly eating meat for Protein to see if I can get my weight loss moving. The only thing I miss and having trouble getting used to is drinking while I am eating or right after because sometimes I get really thirsty. The folks i am acquainted with tell me to have patience, the weight will go. Last night i went to Dickie's Bar B Que with my family and ate mostly chicken with a tiny bit of mashed potatoes but I was a little frustrated because it smelled so good but I was feeling stuffed. If losing weight and keeping it off means this is the way I will have to eat the rest of my life then so be it.Now I can fit in a booth at a restaurant, don't mind going out in public, and shopping for clothes is actually fun instead of frustrating, just to name a few things i am thrilled with. Best trade off I've ever made.

I was told that we had to take small sips when drinking anything. They kept saying "remember sip, sip, sip". I was wondering how in the world i was going to stay hydrated at work sip sip sipping while I was pouring sweat, needing some serious hydration. Just a few days out from surgery i picked up a bottle of Water and chugged two or large three swallows. When I realized what i had done I just knew i had made a big mistake. I waited for the pain or at least some extreme discomfort. Nothing happened! No pain. No discomfort. I have also been able to hold a lot more liquid that I thought I should. Now I can drink a whole Premier Protein drink. I guess my stomach is not swollen and is healing faster that I thought. I just drink until I begin to feel that almost full sensation, wait a little bit and finish. I have a friend that is over a year post-op and still has to sip everything he drinks. He had surgery at the same surgical group but a different surgeon. He also had several complications including kidney stones and just the other day he was dehydrated, again. Are all the rest of us July sleevers still sipping?

I took off 7 weeks and glad I was able to. I had to take an unpaid leave of absence. At 5 weeks I was still having problems with fatigue and constipation. On my other job I was back in two weeks but it is mostly sittling behind my desk. (I run a group home) I was worried about all the heavy lifting i was going to have to do unloading and loading trucks on my morning job and the July/August weather has been mostly over 100 degrees. I go back to work tomorrow but I found out last Friday that during my absence they hired package handlers so all i will be doing is making deliveries when I go back. Very little heavy stuff. Thank God! I was worried for no reason. Still over 100 that peaks out in the afternoon mostly. Also feeling great now and more than ready to get back to work.
