Observations
thebionicbroad replied to Neoteric Verve's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Interesting post. With a husband and two sons, I can't be totally "me-centered," but I understand what you mean. I was always "safe," an obese 54-year old, someone with whom other obese people felt comfortable. Now, a few of my relationships (work and church) have changed, and I marvel at it. Suddenly, I'm a threat. I have to think about this some more. Thank you for posting. -
Wait...shouldn't Calories Per Day For Weight Loss Still Work The Same As Pre-Op?
thebionicbroad replied to jewelwithin's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 7 weeks post-op and rarely go over 700 calories a day. 1,100 sounds like a feast. :blush5: Carbs (even "good" carbs) trigger the release of insulin, which causes the body to store fat. When insulin isn't high, the body releases glucagon, which triggers the body to burn fat. This is over-simplified, but you get the general idea. -

"cheating" (A Concern)
thebionicbroad replied to Indymom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Amen, sister! "Cheating" means breaking the rules. Why have the surgery if you don't intend to do what you are supposed to do? Sheer silliness. And, yes, denial. -
A staff member at one of my sister high schools had had a Lap-band for awhile, but chose to keep it secret. Shortly after her retirement party, she collapsed, and within a few days, was dead. It seems that her Band had eroded, and she had a massive infection. There was nothing that the doctors could do. Every time I see one of those "Get Thin!" billboards along the freeway, I want to tear them down. Many people seemingly do fine with the Band, but the thing is still a ticking time bomb.

Is The Pain Real, Real, Bad If Lapband Is Removed And Gastric Sleeve Done At The Same Time?
thebionicbroad replied to Jesusislove's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
If I hadn't have had my gall bladder out at the same time I had my revision, I think that the pain would have been much less than it was having the Band put in. That port site hurt. I'm almost 6 weeks out, feeling great, and couldn't be happier. -
Possible Erosion....something Has Changed....
thebionicbroad replied to PEvette's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Yes, something has changed. Get to the doctor. Acid reflux and night cough are major signs of at least a slip. Doctor! -
"cheating" (A Concern)

The woman who bragged about going out, right after surgery, and eating popcorn...shivers. There's "cheating," and there's attempted suicide. -

Brat, I really admire your positive attitude. God bless you as you recover from this. Glad that you all are okay. -
Using Straws

Amanda, I'm with you. I'm doing what I was told. That way, if anything goes wrong, the error won't be on my head. -
I'm Always Ccccold!
thebionicbroad replied to Kthump's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
When I got the Lap-band (in December), and was freezing all the time, my Best Half got me a fluffy robe. When I had the revision done (also in December), he bought me an electric blanket. Did I marry the perfect man or what? :Banane55: -
Almost 5 Weeks Post-op And I'm Starving!
thebionicbroad replied to Sunshine62103's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was told 70 - 80 grams of protein a day, and 50 grams a day are still in the form of protein shakes. I can't get enough from my mushies yet. I won't start solids until the beginning of February, when I see my surgeon again. Glad you're feeling better. -
Watching Other People Overeat Grosses Me Out. What Is With That?!

I guess I should be ashamed to admit this, but I always enjoyed Travel Channel's Man vs. Food. I can't watch it anymore. It makes me nauseous. -
High Cholesterol (ldl) Wth?
thebionicbroad replied to Forensikchic's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Puja, Saturated fat (cheese) causes HDL to go up. HDL keeps the arteries clear of plaques. Plaques start with vascular inflammation from a high-carb diet, and the body trying to repair the arteries by using plaques as a bandage. Our bodies make cholesterol, because it's the building blocks of hormones, cell walls, and the brain itself. Unless you have a familial problem where your body over-generates cholesterol, cholesterol does NOT cause heart attacks. -
Too Much Acid In Esophagus At Night!
thebionicbroad replied to ravenjeh's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If you took your pill right before bed, there's a good chance that the pill was still in your esophagus, and dissolved there. You should take pills about 30 minutes before bedtime, to give them a "head start." -
I'm still holding my breath, since I'm almost 4 weeks out. I had my first feeling of fullness today, so I'm assuming that my stomach is healing.

My Gastric Sleeve Loves... My Gastric Sleeve Hates...
thebionicbroad replied to dreamy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My sleeve and I have only been friends for about 4 weeks, but my band and I were always enemies. My band hated eggs, chicken, and cottage cheese. My sleeve loves them. My band loved Peanut Butter. My sleeve hates it. They both love(d) cheeses and spicy foods. -
Almost 5 Weeks Post-op And I'm Starving!
thebionicbroad replied to Sunshine62103's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Rosy, I'm less than four weeks out with the sleeve, so I am not qualified to make assumptions about anything. What I am questioning is the amount of Protein that you are getting. If you are getting 70 - 80 grams a day, and are still feeling true hunger, I'd say eat a small protein snack. I've been all over these boards since November, when I found out that I was going to be sleeved, and NOWHERE have I encountered one person whose doctor said no Protein drinks, or SF Jell-O, etc. To me, your doctor is setting you up for failure. Personally, I don't know how you are still sane, and I hurt for you. You sound like a neat lady who deserves better than to be starved. -
High Cholesterol (ldl) Wth?
thebionicbroad replied to Forensikchic's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
There are two types of LDL: Big fluffy particles, and particles small and hard like BBs. If your HDL (good) cholesterol is high, your LDL is fluffy. Those are benign, and do no harm. If your HDL is low, then the LDL particles are BBs, which cause vascular inflammation, arterial plaques, etc. If your ratio is good, your doctor isn't worried, because your HDL is high enough to indicate that your LDL is the fluffy kind. Sometimes it's good to be fluffy. -
I Need Some Suggestions.. Not Gettin In Enough Food I Don't Think
thebionicbroad replied to blackanese25's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Per doctor's orders, I use a baby spoon, a baby bowl, and a 5" plate. It's part of his training program to teach his patients what a bite size should be. I go back to work on Monday, and I will have these things with me, even if my co-workers give me garbage about it (a few will). Without these, I know that I would be taking too big a bite. -
Almost 5 Weeks Post-op And I'm Starving!
thebionicbroad replied to Sunshine62103's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm almost 4 weeks post-op, and like most obese people, I don't know the difference between hunger and thirst. When I feel that I'm hungry, I drink water for about 15 - 20 minutes, and if the feeling persists, I assume that I'm hungry, and I have 1/2 c. of a protein food. I get most of my protein from Isopure mixed with unsweetened almond milk. When I haven't taken in at least 70 grams of protein a day, I get hungry. I can't imagine being told to not drink protein shakes! My surgeon recommends them. Your sleeve isn't failing; your body needs fuel. Carby foods trigger insulin, which not only makes us store fat, but triggers hunger. Protein keeps us full, and triggers glucagon, which allows the body to burn fat. -

I'm Never Ever Ever Eating Again!
thebionicbroad replied to Riss1908's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I use cottage cheese, Greek yogurt (Fage), and poached eggs with about 1/2 oz. of shredded cheese on top. I like refried beans, but I can't eat the whole can before I think it's too old to finish. Pureed meats, Light Babybel and Laughing Cow Light cheeses. Last night, at my mother-in-law's, I had 1/2 c. (total) of mashed potato, roast beef shreds, and a bit of gravy, chewed to applesauce consistency. Most of my protein still comes from Isopure Dutch Chocolate made with unsweetened almond milk. -
What About Baby Food?
thebionicbroad replied to LBM's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, Light Babybel cheese, Laughing Cow Light Swiss, and Isopure Dutch Chocolate made with unsweetened Almond Milk. I figure that I'll be eating enough baby food when I'm 110 that I don't need to start now. -
Revision Surgery, From Band To Sleeve
thebionicbroad replied to kuntrystrong's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I'm glad that my revision was done in one surgery, too, plus I had my gall bladder out. My surgeon took pictures and gave them to me, and how he knew where to cut to dissect that overgrown Band, I'll never know. It looked like something from "The Blob."
