Muscle and Nerve Damage!
Thomas CPA replied to Weightloss Bliss's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
For a few weeks I found when I lift my arms to run I would get a stabbing pain in the side, started on right eventually move to left and then it went away. It only occured when I was trying to run and moving the arms. Slight back pain but with losing weight fast and taking three weeks to get back to gym it was just normal. -
How many meals do you eat?
Thomas CPA replied to dramagirl28's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Three square meals - breakfast, lunch, dinner and three snacks - two between meals and one couple hours after dinner - mix snacks up with fruit, salads, protein bar, juice -
Yes, get checked and possibly have a new sleep study. I did and the CPAP is getting returned, the sleep apnea is gone. Just because you snore doesn't mean you still have sleep apnea requiring the machine. Are you waking up with the tell tale soaked pillow? Right after the surgery I could not take the machine it was so high pressured it hurt so I quit using it and got a new study.

I started back at gym at week 3. The longer you take the harder it will be. The first week back I could barely do 10 to 15 minutes on treadmill let alone weights. By second week back I was getting stronger. I had to increase calorie intake to have the energy and stamina. It may help to get a personal trainer for the first couple of sessions to help motivate you and help prevent injury. You will find you lost a bit of strength and it will take a couple of weeks to get back to par. Start now, don't delay. You can do it.

Nausea after eating anything
Thomas CPA replied to sroberts25's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Only time I felt nauseous was when I really had to throw up. Otherwise if I eat to much I feel like my stomach is like a lead pipe and it hits up in the esophagus until it moves down in about 1/2 hour. -
How long til you can drive?
Thomas CPA replied to apebrown's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I drove the day after I got home from hospital. -
It doesn't take long for regulars to notice. I have women at church and local restaurants commenting all the time. Twice I have had women come up comment and even hug me with my wife watching.

When I started back it took a week to get back to semi-normal routine so don't overdo. I typically start with 1/2 hour on treadmill then 1 hour of training. You will want to work on abs, arms, legs and back. Mix up routine. Some exercises my trainer has me do for abs. Use a BOSU by doing regular abs and lay on sides to do side abs. Also do Squats and lunges Mix up with other exercises such as bicep curls, leg press. Dead lifts help with back. I do recommend a personal trainer, even if not long term at least a couple of sessions to learn how to use equipment properly and how to mix things up properly.

I ate a cheeseburger and I like it!!!! 3 weeks out
Thomas CPA replied to DreamLife36's topic in Food and Nutrition
It is easy to cheat, I pigged out over weekend but didn't gain any weight but did a lot of sight seeing walking. I don't subscribe to the "we can never have that again" mentality. Geez an occasional ice cream or chocolate chip cookie is not going to do us in. And if you do eat a small bag of popcorn at the movies as I did over the weekend it will not kill the weight loss, just do it a lot. -
Rate of weight loss
Thomas CPA replied to dramagirl28's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Pretty normal, your body metabolism adjusts to reduced caloric intake and goes into starvation mode. shake things up a little with different exercise routine, upping calories a few days. Some people like to go to liquid diet for a day or two but then coming off is same as just increasing caloric intake you shake up the brain into getting out of starvation mode. I dropped quite a bit first month, reduced amount second month and sort of stable into third month. On the good news, I find even if I pig out now, I don't put on any weight though I don't recommend trying it. I found after pigging out that I lose another pound or two. -
17 Year Wedding Anniversary Pic

You look great! Congratulations of enjoying the success of your devotion. Hint, Hint - I have enjoyed going to bank and having new photos taken for atm card and credit cards. -
I have a lot of teacher clients that love to spend money. Short of going to shop-a-holics interventions, here are the suggestions I give to the teachers 1. Never take you credit card or debit cards with you. 2. Only take as much as you need to buy the one item you "NEED" 3. Now if you find other stuff you have choices - spend the limited cash you took on the item you "needed" or the item you saw and "wanted" 4. Now if you want the other stuff you have to go all the way home to get more money which is discouraging for shoppers. 5. When in doubt have someone else like spouse hold the money or at least call the spouse and get permission to go shopping. Like dieting and losing weight have the will power to fight the spending.

Too Much Gas!!!!!
Thomas CPA replied to smallgirlsxthree's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Have you spoken to your doctor? Some gas is normal as you take in air and with smaller stomach it gets pushed out. It took me a week or two to have a regular movement and even with stool softener it was not easy. At 2 1/2 months my gas is mostly above but still have some below though they don't seem to be obnoxiously smelly or loud but my diet has been off a few days. I find burping more of a problem after eating and notice it seems to be from eating to fast. I would still suggest talking to doctor and you might try some Fiber in your diet. At 9 days and mostly liquid you don't have anything solid to come out. -
How many calories per day?
Thomas CPA replied to KristinaRN's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I started in July 2010 at 305 through diet and exercise I lost 70 pounds to 235 by time of surgery August 4, 2011. Now at 192. So lost 43 pounds in 2 1/2 months. I was a bit run down so my PA and Dietician suggested upping to 1,200 calories to slow down and regain stamina since I am active again at gym and tennis. This weekend was a bit much of a pig out but, I needed a break from being good and been fighting cravings for awhile so I figured it is a vacation, why worry. Tomorrow I will be back on regular diet, only have 12 pounds and am happy to make it a pound a week or every two weeks. -
I lost 100 over a year but first 65 was diet before surgery and last 40 post surgery at 2 1/2 months. I don't know about feeling hungry versus just wanting to eat "normal" junk food at times, I have ice cream once in awhile and still losing weight. I still get cravings for the junk foods and find it tempting now that I am near goal to say "it is only few extra calories."

Preparation for Surgery and Post Surgery
Thomas CPA replied to mimi53's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Just take a comfortable pair of pajamas and ditch the gown and a pair of slippers for walking. Some puzzle books or reading material. Some people take their laptop, I just used by IPhone. -
Urinary catheter anyone?
Thomas CPA replied to 420gal's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If they used one one me I didn't know it. At about 9 hours recovery the nurse said if I didn't go soon they would put one in, asked for a couple of more hours and managed to get it flowing. Sometimes when they take it out it will swell a little and the problem is they will have you on a continuous IV for fluids so if you don't go for awhile they may have to put one back in to relieve the bladder. -
Any one with no hair loss?
Thomas CPA replied to Pagie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Your probably doomed. I am 2 1/2 months and my hair thinned pretty good. Go to Hairmax website they have a product you can use to make it look fuller. Synthetic hair fibers which I use when having important meetings and it works nicely. You just sprinkle the stuff on and hold with hairspray, works well for me. -
How many calories per day?
Thomas CPA replied to KristinaRN's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 2.5 months out and doing about 1,200 calories to slow down weight loss otherwise it would be around 800 calories. I still get in around 50 to 80 grams Protein and anywhere from 50 to 120 grams of carb. If it helps I started this weekend at 192 - went to San Diego. Friday night ate at Benihana's and Saturday at Ruth's Chris. In between had a turkey sandwich, a chicken sandwich, a small bag of popcorn at the movies, a Ben and Jerry's Waffle Cone of Mint chocolate Chip, some potato chips, some mini Nutter Butter Cookies, basically took weekend off (got to remember to eat slower) and ended the weekend at 192 pounds. All my exercise consisted of a lot of sight seeing walking around the USS Midway and Seaport Village. I assure you I went well over 1,200 calories per day and a ton of carbs and protein. -
Do the Staples scar over?
Thomas CPA replied to Happy Camper's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
They should put a glue like substance over the staple line. This particular type of surgery is not that old and no long term studies from what I hear. Like a lap band you are talking a foreign object in the body but instead of guessing I would ask the doctor who hopefully knows. -
10 Day out from surgery and scared
Thomas CPA replied to TurtleGirl49's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Some feel anxious, I was looking forward to getting it done and moving on to a better life. I was able to drive the day after being released, was eating normally in 4 weeks, I pushed the limit and don't advise it but my doctor saw me after two weeks and I was one of best patients he had, felt strong and not run down. If you follow the post op orders you should be fine. Try to relax and you should be fine. -
Does anyone else get excessive gurgling sounds after eating?
Thomas CPA replied to Don's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Pretty normal early on, haven't had it after two months. In part it is just stomach acid churning not it being empty. If you stomach hurts you should talk to doctor. Take your antacids it may help -
Pick up some canned or jarred gravies, chicken, beef, etc. I found if you don't overcook the meat, have it tender, mixed in with gravy it comes out easy to chew and if you chew it like 50 times it is same as puree. Also liked soft scrambled eggs with deviled ham. Vegetables steamed well so they can be mushed with a fork worked well. Also mashed potatoes, even baked potato (not skin) as well as soft fruits like peaches and bananas are good, just don't have skins, hard to digest at 3 weeks.

Yup, shoes are a problem. I can't tie the laces tight enough on my old shoes.
