While researching weight loss surgery, I discovered scientific studies showing that the lap band's average weight loss was only 50% of excess weight. Then, while reading the product information from Allergan, I discovered that the band is "not a lifetime product" and I could anticipate a later surgery to replace it.
So, if I'm lucky enough to be average and lose 50% of my excess weight, I'll still be fat and will eventually require a second surgery.

The manufacturer of the LAP-BAND AP™ Adjustable Gastric
Banding System has designed, tested and manufactured it to be
reasonably fit for its intended use. However, the LAP-BAND AP™
System is not a lifetime product and it may break or fail, in whole
or in part, at any time after implantation and notwithstanding the
absence of any defect.

Then I discovered that the Duodenal Switch provides the highest percentage of excess weight lost and the highest percentage of weight loss maintained long term. So, I researched more and found a world renowned DS surgeon offering a very reasonable self-pay rate at a top notch fully equipped hospital in Hermosillo, MX. Dr. Gilberto Ungson performed my DS 8/20/07 and I have maintained at goal for three years now.
Normal size meals satisfy and I do not need to count calories. Simple carbs will put on weight, but everyone in the world has to watch those. I eat full fat everything: butter, cream, salad dressing. I malabsorb 80% of the fat I ingest so it passes right through my system, not affecting my cholesterol or lipid panels except beneficially. I also malabsorb protein at 50%, so my diet is heavy with protein: burgers, steaks, chicken, fish, and BACON! I take a handful of vitamins 4 times a day and have labs run once a year to make any vitamin adjustments I may need.
I enjoyed reading everyone's stories here before I found the DS, but I am so grateful that I did not get the band.
