Problems With Protein Drinks? Try These Tricks.
rosiegirl replied to BunnyLove's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
I understand ... I am just trying to increase my protein intake and am having a hard time w/shakes, so I am trying new things to encourage my having my protein shakes ... tonight I tried something called yoplait smoothie -- have you heard of that? it's fruit & small frozen yogurt pieces and you add skim milk & I also added some protein powder and put all in blender .. I think this is better for me calorie-wise than the eddies one .. it's only 70 calories per serving (the mixture is for 2 servings) and only 10g of sugar, so maybe this is a better choice? -

thanks - I appreciate the advice -- I'm no where near my goal, so I guess I better lay off those eddies shakes things and try another route .. thanks! -
Problems With Protein Drinks? Try These Tricks.

has anyone tried Edys slow churned rich & creamy shake - froze shake mix? I tried one this morning & mixed w/a scoop of protein powder, 14 oz of skim milk, 1/2 banana and a tablespoon of peanut butter ... it was pretty good .. am wondering if this is ok? the shake alone has 210 calories and 6 g of protein, but with all the other stuff I add in the protein count goes way up (like up to almost 46 grams of protein) ... of course I can only have about 1/2 of the finished shake when it's done at a time since it's too filling . but am wondering if the calorie content is okay or is it too much? can anyone advise? -
Is It Bad That I Can Eat Almost A Whole Can Of Progresso Soup
rosiegirl replied to bonbon85's topic in Food and Nutrition
I'm almost 4 months out .. that's basically all I live on -- SOUP SOUP SOUP ... I, too, can have a full can of soup, but usually blend it in my bullet so it's pureed since I try to have lentil soup a lot since it's full of protein ... I usually buy Amy's vegetable lentil soup and puree it in the bullet and add some vegetable broth for more liquid and some added flavor, and then heat and have .. it's deiish! Sounds to me like you are on the right path ... keep up the good work! -
I was sleeved by Dr. Roslin in NWH on Sept 24 -- all is going well - down almost 60 lbs -- you will all do great!!!! "illgeturhairdid"- what support groups do you go to? I go to the one at NWH monthly, but would like to find some others to go to as well .. any recommendations from any fellow NY's would be much appreciated!

Anyone Not Losing Their Hair?
rosiegirl replied to jailynn's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 3.5 mos out, and so far, so good .. I admit, I struggle to meet my protein goals and don't always hit the marker ... but so far, no significant hair loss, although I am prepared to lose hair since everyone says they do...I'm just holding my breath for now ... I also switched shampoos prior to my surgery (9/24/11) to a sulphate free shampoo, so not sure if that has been helping or not, but so far, so good .. I, too, have a thick head of hair so I would be sad to experience significant hair loss, but as everyone else says, I would rather be healthy & lose weight & some hair, if need be, knowing that eventually it will grown back and I would still be a healthier me! Here's to a happy & healthy new year for all of us out there! -
you will do great - anyone in Dr. Roslin's group will be a fabulous choice ... either NWH or Lennox Hill will be fabulous, of that I'm sure. Good luck and keep us all posted ...

How Long Before You Recovered From Gastric Sleeve Surgery ?
rosiegirl replied to jasleeve's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
no, Jay Robb does not have a smell compared to all other protein powders I have tried ... it's "unflavored" and does not have a smell ... that's why I was able to use it .. I hate the smell of protein powder too .. makes me gag ... and this did not have that ichy smell. keep the peace! -
How Long Before You Recovered From Gastric Sleeve Surgery ?
rosiegirl replied to jasleeve's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
and oh - sip, sip, sip ,,,,, do not drink anything fast or gulp ... tiny winy sips will get you to where you need to go ... I promise. If you sip sip sip, you won't throw up ... just don't take any big swallows or gulps .. you are not ready for that yet, and it might be a long long time before you can feel comfortable doing anything other than sips, so just hang in there .... better to sip and not feel sick than gulp and feel discomfort .... if you sip, you can work around feeling like you will throw up because you will know in advance if something agrees or disagrees with you right away ... just take it slow ... you will get there .. we all do! -
How Long Before You Recovered From Gastric Sleeve Surgery ?
rosiegirl replied to jasleeve's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
oh - and remember - the first three weeks were the hardest for me .. I used to walk around crying thinking I made the biggest mistake of my life -- but then, after the 3 week marker, it miraculously got easier every day and now I know I made the best choice for a healthier new life for myself! keep the peace ... -
How Long Before You Recovered From Gastric Sleeve Surgery ?
rosiegirl replied to jasleeve's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Jas - I use Jay Robb's unflavored protein powder -- get it in Wholefoods -- I mix it w/a pack of chocolate alba, 10 - 12 oz of skim milk and 1.5 tablespoons of peanut butter ... put it all in blender and mix up ... sometimes I add 1/2 banana to it .... it doesn't have a protein smell, but all together, it's a whopping 46+ grams of protein, and I have to split it into two servings (one in morning and one in later afternoon) ... you might want to try that ... I am still not a big fan of protein drinks, trust me, but I do realize the importance of getting my protein in and the protein drink really helps me boost my protein intake daily, so I suggest you try your hardest to find something that works for you. Once you are able to have mushies, if you like lentil soup, I would suggest you mixing a can of Amy's vegetable lentil soup in a bullet (makes it really pureed) and heat up & have that -- one can will give you a whopping 16-18 grams of protein - again, you will have to split up in separate servings cause I don't think your new little pouch/tummy will allow you to have too much at once, but the warmth of the puree when heated will go down easier than room temperature protein drinks .. good luck - hang in there! -
thank you ... and you too -- looks like you are doing great re: your ticker. Congrats!!! Happy Happy ... merry merry!

great - see you then! Happy New Year!

Will We Have To Sip Forever?
rosiegirl replied to jasleeve's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I am 3 mod out and still cannot drink water fast ... can sip, but not gulp. Everyone heals at different pace and everyone can do things differently ... so just take it slow, and relax ... you will learn what works for you best as you go along. And no drinking when you eat, unless, of course, you are choking or something like that .. and even then ... just tiny winy sips ... but basically, no drinking when eating ... you'll adjust to that perfectly fine ..we all do! :-) hang in there ... -
Support System After Vsg
rosiegirl replied to jasleeve's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi - hang in there! The first 3 weeks were the hardest for me .. it will get easier for you, I promise! Do you have a support group you can go to? I see you are in Westchester, NY ... there's a support group at NWH the first Thursday of every month .. maybe you can come to that group meeting for more support? -
hi - how are you? I see you were sleeved in Westchester? Me too! on Sept 24 .. in NWH ... where did you go .. NWH or WH? Who was your doc? Mine was Dr. Roslin. How are you doing? Hang in there .. the first 3 weeks were the hardest for me .. then miraculously, all got so much better! I know you are going to do great! keep the peace ....

Hi - my surgery was Sept. 24th, so 2 days ago it was basically 3 months since ... I'm down 53 lbs ... I think I'm a slower loser than most of you from what I read, but I'm very happy w/my success so far .. I figure, it took me almost 20 years (I'm 53) to get to my heaviest (about 269), so if it takes me 1-2 years to get to my goal, I'm way ahead of the game! I'm in no rush ... just being patient and working at getting healthier day by day. I still cannot eat too much, just tiny little portions, which is fine ... but still not at a good point where I can have "anything" .. basically mushies and soups are the easiest thing for me still, but that's ok .. I know that eventually I will get to where all of you sound like you are at so I'm just taking it slow & enjoying success. cheers to you all! Happy New Year!

I think you will be very happy w/Dr. Roslin ... truly, I am very very satisfied w/my results and how things went. Will you be attending support group meetings in NWH? I go every month to their support group meetings .. maybe I will meet you there in January (their meetings are the first Thursday of every month (usually)) ... I also started going to the support group meeting a few months prior to my surgery, so it helped me get lots of information, etc. in preparation before the surgery. And Jamie, the nutritionist who leads the support groups, is fabulous! Hope to see you there! When is your surgery scheduled for?
-
yes, I used Dr. Roslin - he also has a practice up in Northern Westchester Hospital, which is where I had my VSG surgery ... he is great ... all went well & I was sleeved on Sept 24, 2011, and now down almost 54 lbs. I'm sure his team in Lennox is equally fabulous to that of NWH. Good luck! You'll do great!

To Everyone 4-6 Weeks Out Gastric Sleeve Surgery- Wanna Compare?
rosiegirl replied to TiffanyC's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
wow - all you guys are doing so great! congrats! I guess I'm going at a slower rate, I was sleeved on 9/24 and was 265 prior to surgery, 269 after surfer, and at present, 218. I guess I'm averaging about 2-3 lbs a week .... I'm not working out yet, but keep telling myself I have to start (I hate hate hate exercise). And I sometimes struggle to get more than 50g of protein in a day ... but I'm working at it ... can you guys tell me, is 50-60 g of protein a day sufficient? I just cannot seem to get it above that marker .. I get full so easily, I really am having a hard time getting more than that in on a good day???? let me know your thoughts, thanks. -
I Thought I Was Out Of The Woods....
rosiegirl replied to FishingNurse's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
to all .... I am just under 3 months since my VS surgery, and so far not much hair loss at all (basically a few strands when I wash my hair, but I am attributing that to the weather change) ... I started using Wen shampoo about 2 months prior to my surgery in September, and I don't know if it has helped or not, but so far, so good. Wen is a sulfate free shampoo, and is supposed to help strengthen and make your hair healthy ... so for anyone who might be interested, it seems to have so far worked for me. But then again, I don't know what will happen in the next few weeks/months w/my hair, so I will have to wait & see and keep you all informed if there is any change. Just thought I would share this info about Wen shampoo in case for any reason it helps w/hair loss ... I have thick curly hair, and am so hoping I don't start losing my hair ... I think I will be very upset (but am ready for it, since everyone seems to say it happens). I'm just happy I'm losing weight - down almost 50 lbs since Sept. 24th, so for that, I'm extremely thankful! -
