odd request.... post-op "bible"? Dr. Aceves.
VSG4aHealthierMe posted a topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
Many have said they received a post-op "bible" with all their post op info from their physician b4 heading home. Does Dr. Aceves also give these out? I am interested in being as informed as humanly possible about my post-op life BEFORE I have the surgery. If he does do this is there anyone willing to scan the pages (or clear pics would work too, I have software that can enlarge things without harming the integrity provided they are clear shots and this may even be easier for you) and e-mail them to me so I can read them? If so please PM me and I will give you my e-mail addy. Thanks in advance! -

Good info! Muscle loss and weight loss
VSG4aHealthierMe replied to VSG4aHealthierMe's topic in Food and Nutrition
I USED to be that way. I remember one time (it happened more I am just recounting the once though) that I was about 11 or 12 and we were moving. adults were working on getting heavy stuff out and there was a recliner in my way. I had been told not to left things that heavy b4 many times because, according to them, it would "mess up my insides" and I wouldn't "be able to have kids". Well, I didn't want to get yelled at for not helping at all and the chair wasin my way so I couldn't get anything else and I figured if I am gonna get yelled at I might as well DO something to get yelled at for. So I picked up the recliner, by myself, and carried it in the house. I actually DIDN'T get yelled at because it was in the house b4 the other came out of the bedroom they had taken a mattress and box springs to. They each assumed the other brought the chair and and no one had a clue lol. So, anyway, like I was saying I USED to be really strong. Then I got older and got preg was only allowed to lift up to 5 pounds (which doesn't leave much you CAN lift) for 9 months and my muscles atrophied and since have only gotten worse since having surgery on my wrist which makes it painful to lift things. My muscles were very compact though, never bulky (except my calves) so I am not worried about bulking up too much. Although I do plan to get close to goal b4 I worry about strength training so I *don't* bulk up. With my frame I look too much like a man as it is lol. If I bulk up, my boobs deflate and I cut my hair ppl are gonna call me sir lol.I would love to get my strength back.... but I don't wanna look like a dude -
This video was made with bypass patients in mind but I think it is really good info for ANY WLS, and even b4 WLS. It discusses the prevention of muscle loss in WLS patients. I found it to be very informative, hopefully someone else will too! <iframe width="425" height="349" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/SZ8Z4TAew-A" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> More really informative videos found here: http://www.youtube.c...u/3/6SHQ20ssAgg

Good info! Muscle loss and weight loss
VSG4aHealthierMe replied to VSG4aHealthierMe's topic in Food and Nutrition
If I could "spot treat" I would do the same. I have what I have always heard called "cheerleader calves", and always have. I used to think it was fat so I started targeting that area during my workouts and they got BIGGER! My youngest has them too but at least guys don't get a second look if they have huge muscular calves. I am kinda concerned what my legs are gonna look like when I lose the weight on my thighs and my calves remain HUGE!! :behindsofa: Or worse... get bigger again from working out!! :dizzy::faint: -

Good info! Muscle loss and weight loss
VSG4aHealthierMe replied to VSG4aHealthierMe's topic in Food and Nutrition
Basically it talks about how the body is reluctant to burn fat so it will burn muscle instead. we want our body to be anabolic (muscle building) instead of catabolic (muscle burning). He recommends exercise and creatine, glutamine and whey protein to help signal the body to be anabolic. It talks about how they gave it to muscle builder and it helped them, then elderly and it helped them as well so they gave it to elderly to improve brain function and it helped, then they gave it to mice and gave them a stroke and it decreased the size of the stoke, so they gave it to mice in general and it increased their life span by I think it was 10%. That is ALOT of benefits from just a few supplements that we either could be taking or may already be taking (like in some protein drinks). I found it to be quite impressive! -
How long are leaks usually a concern?
VSG4aHealthierMe posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was talking with an old friend who got bypass almost 5 years ago. She just had he NINETEENTH surgery to repair a leak! She has been in and out of the hosp since right after she had it done. This got me thinking..... Is there like a time limit, of sorts, where after that point the likelihood of a leak either diminishes substantially and disappears all together? I know the sleeve as a stand alone is only a few years old but they have been cutting and stapling stomachs for like 20 years... or I think that's the number I read during my research, so surely there is enough data for a relatively solid answer on this, right? I guess I always just thought that once the tummy had time to heal that leaks wouldn't be an issue anymore unless you got stupid and like overate big time. My second question doesn't have to do with the sleeve but I did very little in regards to looking into anything more invasive than the sleeve and I am hoping some of you who dug a little deeper may know the answer. She said that they are going to go in for the 20th time and they plan to revise the bypass... HOW?? A bypass stomach is only about as big as an egg to begin with... how can you revise it to be any different/smaller?? I asked her and she said she was wondering the same thing. This is one of my issues with bypass. You are not left with much of a stomach at all and if something goes wrong its not like you can go to wal-mart and buy a new one and with it being so small there isn't any room left for fixing a problem, as far as I can tell at least. Anyone have a clue on how the heck you revise a bypass?? -

Good luck Wednesday! Just keep busy tomorrow by making sure everything is clean and packed and you have post op supplies so you have less to worry about the day of your sleeve and when you get home. -

Doctor never heard of the Sleeve
VSG4aHealthierMe replied to Fusilli66's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Well, I guess I have just had more than my fair share of a-holes then lol.In all my life I have had exactly one doctor that I liked and trusted who didn't turn around and make me suffer to make a buck. Most recent case being my former dentist. I had $3,000 worth of work on my teeth only to be in more pain than when I started. I finally realized that what he was doing is intentionally making mistakes to that he could turn around and work on the same teeth over and over. Thanks to him I am a 28 year old who is going to have to get dentures because the damage is too extensive..... and that's just the most recent. -
I was reading a blog that someone posted to someone else. I was nodding along, reading and agreeing with everything that was mentioned... then I saw this: http://wasabubblebutt.blogspot.com/2010/03/researching-mexican-or-us-sleeve.html I have never heard of this for weight loss surgery! I know they tend to do it for b4/after plastic procedures but WLS??? Aceves doesn't do this does he? I am a VERY modest person. I can't even stand to have cleavage showing in public! This is something I absolutely WILL NOT DO! For ANY surgeon. Please tell me Aceves does not require this!!?? If he does I need to start looking for another surgeon!!

VSG4aHealthierMe replied to VSG4aHealthierMe's topic in Pregnancy with Weight Loss Surgery
Yeah, I changed my name to something that would work pre AND post op. I am really hoping "fat trapped" isn't what I will be feeling this time next year so this name works out better Plus in chat ppl call you by the beginning of your ID if they don't know your name and I gotta be honest... I wasn't loving being called "Fat" lol. -

She said she didn't know. She and I were both under the impression that they were going to somehow go in and fix the leak issue with some sort of revision... -
