Sometimes nothing seems to make us happy. There you are, getting comments--some are intrusive and/or rude, but some are just friendly curiosity from folks who might not what to say, but do want you to know that they "notice". Here I am, 89# off and other than my two daughters, no one has said a word about my weight loss. No one. Which is more hurtful? Damned if I know... Prayers going up for us all.

Switching from bypass to sleeve
Valentina replied to Express09's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Does your surgeon know your indecision? I would think that the operative set-up would need to be switched out. I changed from bypass to sleeve, but did so a month before my surgery. l needed to be home the same day. The sleeve surgery allowed me to do that. -
How much post-surgical pain should I expect?
Valentina replied to leebick's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes, everyone is different. "Viva le difference" Just keep in mind that no matter the pain you experience, there will be a well educated Pain Management Team on site to reduce it to a level you can handle. You have the right to be pain free to an expected level. Don't wait until you lose control of the pain. When you first feel pain at a level #5-6, ask for something to reduce it. Do NOT wait until your pain reaches #7 or above. By then your pain is much harder to get ahead of and bring back down. Whatever is needed will be available. Now, find something else to worry about---you know you will. Good luck and post as soon as you feel up to it post-op. Yes, we're nosy, but we also really care. scooching over and making room for you on the, "Losers' Bench". Prayers going up... -
Doc said weight loss plan was a waste of time. I need encouraged.
Valentina replied to Beck90's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
There's a reason why surgeons do their best work when their patients are asleep... I first started exercising in the pool after my total L knee replacement. I continued after I had my first spine reconstruction. I am still in the pool while awaiting my next spinal surgery. All of this pool "nonsense" has been since my WLS almost 5yrs out. Whenever I am doing an exercise program in the pool, I feel better, am more flexible and I lose weight. In fact, my bariatric surgeon in conjunction with my orthopedic surgeon have forbidden me to exercise in a gym. I am either to exercise in the Water or take SHORT walks. Do what YOU can do. Do NOT injure yourself doing something you know in your heart (and joints) that you shouldn't be doing. I started with weekly water sessions with physical therapy. Maybe you could get a RX for Aqua PT (insurance paying) and get an exercise routine that you can continue on your own when the PT is over. My insurance is also paying for the pool exercise program. Worth checking out, right? Good luck and don't let anyone (surgical "God" or not) "take you out of the water". Keep us posted. We care. Prayers going up. -
Call your surgeon's office. What harm will it do? I have not read one person post that what you are consuming now is correct. Just call your bariatric team and ask. You will be happier and less frightened-- and to be frank---so will we. Prayers still going up.

Dumping syndrome with gastric sleeve
Valentina replied to beauty and the beast's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Yes, it can happen to us sleevers--about 17% to be exact. I am one of that 17%. I have come to think of dumping as a good thing. It keeps me honest and on track. I will dump if I eat anything: overly sweet spicy too dense rice Pasta bread Or if I eat too fast or too much (and I mean 1 forkful too much). You can dread dumping and let the fear of having it keep you from having WLS, or you can think about it on a positive level. Once again, it's all about choices. Think about it. Prayers going up. -
Worried scared and ready
Valentina replied to shellsndreams's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I think you are as normal as we come, my friend. WLS is a not only a major surgery, but is a life changing surgery. Not to be frighten would be abnormal. I take percocets every day. I have fibromyalgia , OA, RA, DJD, spinal defects, a complete L knee replacement, and rebuilding of L2, L3, L4, and L5, ---will have L1 rebuilt in the Fall--when I'm ready. WLS is one decision that has eased my pain more than any other attempt to do so. I am prepared to do just about anything that could relieve my of my daily pain--if just a wee bit. Taking weight off of my joints, and spine has reduced my ingestion of oral pain killers in half. Should you be frightened? absolutely Will your pain be less after WLS? I'm sure of it. Will you regret having WLS? maybe at first--which is also normal with the expected "hormonal flush" that most of us go through. Will your life change for the better after WLS? Absolutely--I promise, my friend. Keep posting your "rants and raves", your "fears", and "expectations".This site is full of people who have "been there/done that", and will be able to guide you. If you follow your bariatric team's program to the letter, keep a positive attitude and an increase in your activity level to the best of your physical ability, you will have a journey that will increase the joy in your life with your girls to a level you can only dream of now. This, too, I promise. Prayers going up for you. -
I wish you would call them---tomorrow. I couldn't be more serious about my request that you call. Somewhere along the line, you have gotten "off track". What harm can come from calling your bariatric team? It just might help. Otherwise, so be it. I wish you well. Prayers going up for you, friend.

I know that you had bariatric surgery, friend. You posted that you had a by-pass. I'm sharing with you that while all pouches are not the same size, they aren't "stretchable"--especially at 3 weeks. If your pouch can stretch at all depends on your surgeon's preference and performance. I read in another post of yours that you are 3 weeks out. I also read that you are frightened. That is why I am recommending that you call your bariatric team TOMORROW and let them relieve your fears. At three weeks out, you should be able to consume more than you are---and do so without being frightened.
-
Not only is it OK to have a little more as time goes on, but it is a MUST . I believe you really need to call your bariatric team and revisit your program's guidelines. I truly feel that unless your surgeon did not take enough of your stomach out, it will NOT stretch. From personal experience of misusing my sleeve, I can testify that my sleeve that was is only 10% of my original stomach, has not stretched. You should not be frightened to progress. Please discuss your fears with your bariatric team: surgeon, Nut., and therapist. Each and every one of them will be able to assure you from their own perspective, as to how and what you need to be eating at each and every level of your journey. A WLS journey is designed for success when used as a tool. WLS is not supposed to frightened us into submission. Learn to work with it--not in spite of it. Please, call your team. Prayers going up for you.

I don't get it either. I've never known eggs to be foul. Burnt popcorn, though.......horrid stuff. Happens all the time where I work. The break area has pair of microwaves....each a different size and wattage....one has rotary feature....other does not. People are always goofing up the cooking times needed between the two. The struggle is real. I can remember arriving at work when I was pregnant (many, many, many years ago), making it to my office and then the smell of the open food carts on the units would hit me. The smell of the eggs would let me spend the next hour with my friend, "Tommy Toilet". The stench was just gut retching--literally. yuck. Now a days, though, one of my favorite breakfasts is a poached egg poached in milk with a dollop of butter, salt and pepper. I spoon out the eggs with some of the hot buttered milk and yummy, yummy in my tummy. (did I mention that I am a dairy farmer's daughter? ). Sometimes if the well was dry, we had more milk available than Water... Now about the popcorn... I LOVE burnt popcorn! When I was experiencing GERD--before surgery, I found that eating burnt popcorn actually help rid myself of excess acid. I have set off the smoke alarms many, many times. One time I actually had flames coming out of the microwave! :0 I make my popcorn in a old fashion kid's brown lunch bag--put into the microwave for 4 mins. or until burnt to perfection! No oil--just popcorn put into a brown paper bag . YUM!

I'm making my final plans to go surf fishing this Thurs. At this point, I'm thinking I'd better go now--before my body won't allow me to. That--if I were unable to get into the surf, Dub, would be my "final sign" to let go. Once in the surf, all will be well.--snow and all.

I miss refreshing drinks of water
Valentina replied to rhansen7's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
If you are having issue severe enough to concern you, call your bariatric team. They should always be your first life-line. By all means, come here post to share your concerns and get "been there, done that" advice, but you should ALWAYS call your bariatric team first. Feel better, my friend. Make the call--please. Prayers going up for you. -
Good job, Ladies. That's the way this site is supposed to work!

Sleep study not medically necessary?
Valentina replied to Kellyann86's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Do you have sleep apnea? If you don't have it, maybe you don't need a sleep study. I didn't have a sleep study, because I've never suffered from sleep apnea. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". Good luck. -
Tattoos after WLS
Valentina replied to jea(n__n)ette's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I got a tattoo for my 60th birthday which was 2 years out. Everything went well and I love it! I had it put on the inside of my ankle, so I don't know it that makes a difference. I would think that trying to put a tattoo on a flabby ribcage, stomach or arms might be a different story. If you know your tattooist, give him/her a call and let us all know the answer. -
Are Your Family Members Overweight and Which of Them Supported You?
Valentina replied to Alex Brecher's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
OMG! I'm so sorry about your husbands decision to leave the planet. I'm glad you and your Chinese Crested Gucci have each other. Me too. Thank you. Gucci and I are quite a team. We are inseparable. He even loves to go surf fishing with me even though the fish I land are ten times bigger than he is. Seriously though, I honestly don't know if I could have found my way back from my grief without him. As my bumper sticker says: "Who rescued who?" -

Kitchen? What kitchen?? Oh, are you talking about that room with all of the cobwebs? I think it's still there. It's been awhile... -
Need suggestions... Please
Valentina replied to kristiw14's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Whoa, friend. Take a breath. You will overwhelm yourself. Please, take one task at a time. If the crystal lights are too sweet, Water them down, +/or add a bit of lemon juice to them. Try adding Nutritional yeast to your broth. It will not only add Protein, but will had a "crouton" taste. Try making some homemade bone broth---so much better for you and soooo much better tasting. sugar free ice pops will help with getting your liquids in and the cold wakes up your taste buds a bit. Unflavored Protein powder may help instead of or in addition to your Protein shakes might help break the over sweetness issue. There are a great many folks on this site who will be offering you many more suggestions. Take the time to not only read their posts, but try using the ones that fit into your life the best. Try to relax. Don't panic. You got this. With a little help from your friends (us, here on BP) you'll do great! Prayers going up for you, Friend. -
Did you have a "MD supervised diet" regimen before surgery? That is the time when you were supposed to learn how to eat healthier. I suggest that you make an appointment with your team's Nut., and therapist. This journey you are just beginning on is long and winding. To start out without a "roadmap" is just asking to get "lost". I hope you make the appointments in the morning. Prayers going up for you, friend.

Are Your Family Members Overweight and Which of Them Supported You?
Valentina replied to Alex Brecher's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Everyone on my mother's side of the family were super obese. My father's side was tall, lanky and cranky. -------all deceased. All of my siblings know of my WLS. None of them are supportive. My S.O. (6' 6"/ 300#), John was adamantly against my WLS and committed suicide the morning of my sleeve surgery. However, my Chinese Crested, Gucci seems to be OK with my decision. -
She's your mother... Many prayers going up.

Maybe you could ask your Bariatric team if there is a Protein shake available that is prescription covered. I know that a neighbor of mine gets Boost and Ensure monthly delivered after her MD wrote a script for it. Worth a call, right?

If your pain meds are making you ill, then call your bariatric team and get a RX for a different one. One pain pill does not fit all. Recovery is so much faster and "easier" if you aren't fighting the pain. Work with it. Feel better and don't forget to call. Prayers going up...
