Find a support group in your area. There might not be too many sleevers due to it being a newer procedure, but any support is better than no support. I haven't gotten my surgery date yet but I've been going to a local group for the past 2 months. I am lucky that my husband is very supportive, but the groups know how you are feeling and can really relate to you. The groups have been really supportive of me in my questioning and my decision and I know they will help me through the process.

I had an endoscopy (same as gastroscopy I think) yesterday and am currently doing the pH monitoring (48-Hour Bravo Esophageal pH Test). Really not a big deal. In the endoscopy the doctor puts a camera down your throat and looks at your insides down your esophagus, into your stomach and a little bit into your small intestines. The pH monitoring is done by the doctor placing a electronic capsule in your esophagus and it can be done during the endoscopy. My throat is sore from the camera and my chest is uncomfortable probably because of the irritation of the hiatal hernia that he discovered yesterday, but overall no big deal. It's better to know what's going on.

I am 26 and I am looking into getting the VSG too. I have done lots of research on all of the procedures and I have no interest in getting the band either. I went to the required seminar on Saturday and the surgeons talked mostly about the band and the bypass. I called today to make my first appointment with the surgeon. I am concerned that he is going to push the band on me because of my age and relatively low BMI (40.1 and counting). I had never seriously considered WLS before I found out about the VSG because I don't like the band and the bypass is too invasive for me. I don't like the idea of any foreign objects inside of me so the band is not an option for me. The staples for the VSG will be hard enough. Also, one of the selling points of the band is that it is reversible. Like you said, this is a life changing decision and we are not making this decision lightly. We are committed to changing our lives forever for the better, so there is no need for something reversible. I say if you are truly committed to making the changes necessary for success then more power to you. Good luck!

Dogzz109 is so right. I have done my research and lived through my mom getting tshe RNY 9 years ago. She now runs multiple WLS support groups. The surgery is an excellent tool to help us lose weight but it is just a tool. If I drink lots of milkshakes and eat junk after surgery I will gain the weight back. We still have to make better food choices even after surgery. Surgery makes the weight loss easier but there are still lifestyle changes that need to be made. Also, if you do start gaining, you can use your tool to help get the weight off again.

Good for you doing your research. My mom had a RNY 9 years ago and has maintained an over 300 pound weight loss with minimal complications. I am looking into the sleeve for myself as I 'only' have 75-100 pounds to lose and minimal comorbidities compared to my mom. Which procedure is better depends on your weight before surgery and your comorbidities.
