Here is my progress so far...with pics!
grannyk replied to Becca's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
May...I am 5 days post-op with Dr. Aceves in Mexicali, and my daughter was sleeved by him 7-1-10. She has lost 90 lbs and feels better than she ever has. My experience there was awesome. Don't let anyone say you are crazy for considering Mexico. My daughter and I are both registered nurses, and the hospital there is remarkable. Not only was it beautiful, it was cleaner than any I have ever seen. My trash was emptied and my floor mopped 3...count 'em 3 times a day. Beautiful marble floors, bathrooms better than any hotel I have ever stayed in. The personnel are extremely attentive and the doctors are so caring and professional. Two of them made rounds 3 times daily. I had a slight problem with my BP, as I missed a day of my medication, but it was dealt with promptly and effectively. Hopefully I will not need it in a few months. Postoperatively, I have had a very uneventful course so far. No nausea, very little pain (no pain med since my plane trip home on Sunday) and no problem getting my liquids in at all. I am having juice, Water, broth, tea and whey Protein mixed in water during my 10-day clear liquid diet. My daughter says by this Friday I will be wanting to chew on my pillow, but so far, so good. Hope this information helps. Do your research. There are several docs in Mexico that sleevers on the board swear by. Don't be afraid to go there for your surgery. My insurance didn't cover it, so I was self-pay, but that way we just did our research, cleared it with our primary care docs here in the States and scheduled our surgeries. No jumping through hoops to make the insurance company happy. Good luck with your research. Keep us posted...Kathe -
Upper arm compression sleeves?
grannyk replied to FuriosMommy's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
TStew, the girl you saw in the store could also have been a breast cancer survivor. Sometimes these patients contract a condition called lymphedema and they have to wear the compression garments every day. The concept of compression garments for WLS patients is a good one, and I saw another thread on here with a lot of information on places where they could be purchased. I know I will need something like that and the suggestion of using them for exercise that I say above sounds great. I love this forum; there is so much good information and encouraging words. Thanks to all who post here. -
Ditto to all the above. I am one day post-op in Mexicali with Dr. Aceves. My daughter was sleeved on 7-1-10 and I was scheduled for 8-12-10 but had to postpone due to a fall with major injuries from which I had to recover. I have watched her progress over the last few months with amazement. She has lost 90 lbs slowly by some standards but steadily, no stalls. She says she has never felt better and her energy level is great. She made the trip with me and the personnel here are thrilled to see her looking so good and feeling so healthy. I am a nurse and have taken care of RNY patients with terrible physical and mental complications. Also my cousin had the bypass several years ago. He lost weight at first, but not as much as 90 lbs as I recall, and has regained quite a bit of it. He is in the process of starting again to use his tool to improve his health. I would never have considered WLS until I heard about the sleeve. Reading and researching, I believe that getting rid of the old bag that has made my life miserable, my stomach...not my mother, is one of the best moves I will ever make. Best wishes in your decision making and I hope to see you join us on the losers bench!! Kathe

Surgery 4/18. Talk me down!
grannyk replied to Virginia S's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Oh, yes. I am fully recovered. I was very blessed not to have been a quadriplegic, and smashing my face into the outside corner of a wall didn't make my nose any smaller either. Neither my nor my daughter's insurance would cover the cost, and when she told me she was going to Mexico I said "Are you out of your mind?!?!?" But she had done her research and got me hooked on this website and I learned a ton about the actual surgery and Dr. Aceves. I feel very comfortable with going to Mexicali. She went by herself, but she will be accompanying me because my father died very suddenly recently and she is feeling very protective of me. We are like joined at the hip since it has been just the two of us since she was 7 years old. We are also both registered nurses, so we feel like we have a handle on the surgery/hospital thing. She said the hospital in Mexicali was cleaner and more up scale than any she has seen here. Will follow you on the site. Keep posting so I will know how you are doing. Kathe -
Surgery 4/18. Talk me down!
grannyk replied to Virginia S's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hang in there. Don't psych yourself out about this. I am scheduled 4-14-11 with Dr. Aceves. I was originally scheduled for 8-2010, but I was injured in a fall and had to delay for a broken neck and total knee replacement. However, my daughter had this done 7-1-10, has lost 90 lbs and feels great. Watching her post-op course had been encouraging. The worst part according to her is the liquid diet for about 3 weeks after surgery. She wanted to chew something so bad!!! I can't wait to get this done. I have been overweight off and on my whole life. I've been fat and I've been skinny (5'10" and 128 at one time in my life) and skinny is better. I just want to feel better and be able to keep up with my 2-year-old great grandson. And I want to get rid of my C-pap more than anything. Just think of all the wonderful things we will be able to do in our smaller less cumbersome bodies. Keep us posted on your progress. Kathe -
Amber, I am 62 and will be getting sleeved on 4-14-11. How I wish I could have done this before my skin is old and stretched out. I will probably have to wear some kind of suit to keep from flapping in the wind when the fat is gone My daughter is 33 and had her sleeve on 7-1-10. She has lost 85 lbs and says it is life changing. She looks and feels great. I say if you are 18, in good health and have already been struggling with your weight, GO FOR IT!!!! Keep us posted on your decision. Everyone here is in your corner.

I'm sure all will be OK. Best wishes and God bless. -
April 14 for me too with Dr. Aceves. Who is doing your surgery?

You say you are not losing weight, but your ticker shows 34 lbs. That is in less than 2 months. That sounds great to me. My daughter was sleeved 7-1-10 and has lost 83 lbs. I am scheduled for 4-14-11 (had to delay from last August for injury problems from a fall.) My daughter looks and feels great and says her sleeve is life changing. Her weight loss has been steady with no stalls. At this point she can eat anything she wants except rice. So don't be discouraged. It will happen.
