I'm 2 wks out and right now, I am suppose to walk which I am doing. My question is when will the dr release you to lift light weights. Rt now, I don't want to becaues my side is still sore sometimes and I don't want to risk a leak, but I was just curious about a time frame. Thanks.

Too much protein at once
drysdale replied to Wildorchids's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My NUT told me that your body can only absorb about 25 grams of protein during each meal. So, the 50 grams might be wasteful. I agree that you might need to half the amount. -
Pain Pain Go Away!!
drysdale replied to MommyTawnie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
And one more thing....the gas took about a week to leave my body. But, you will feel gassy when you drink your water or protein drinks. You will also feel bloated because there is swelling from the surgery. The swelling has taken about 2 wks to subside for me. Hang in there. It's just been 3 days. -
Pain Pain Go Away!!
drysdale replied to MommyTawnie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm so sorry. I had the same thing. I was sleeved on 12/7. I thought the 3rd and 4th day were the worst. I took my pain meds for a good week and slept alot just so I didn't have to feel the pain. I was shocked at how much the procedure hurt. For me, it took a good 2 wks to feel normal. Everyone is different. Hopefully, you will feel a little better before tomorrow. Just don't over do it. The more you do the worse you might feel the next day. Remember, you did just have surgery. Let people wait on you and take it easy. Merry Christmas Eve! -
Not only does dieting cause weight loss, so does surgery. Anesthesia will cause hair loss between 3-6 months following surgery. I don't know why...it's just what I was told. I hear the zinc orally will help, Nioxin shampoo helps as well as Rogaine. The problem is that all of these take about 2 months to show any signs of new growth, so the sooner you start the better you are once you start your hairloss. The good news for the loss due to anesthesia is that your hair will grow back. However, I am not sure how the ongoing diet and weight loss will affect hair. I am just 2 wks out and have started everything to help lesson my hair loss when it happens. I hope this helps.

how long were you in pain/ bloated and gassy feeling?
drysdale replied to Lila21's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I asked this same thing about a week ago.I was sleeved on Dec 7, so I am 9 days out. For me, I would say the gas lasted about 4-5 days. Day 3 was when the left shoulder pain began. They say that walking helps as well as fluids. As for the bloating....I am bloated whenever I drink one of my Protein shakes. I think the bloating might last about 4 wks. I had my post op today and that is what they told me. Also, it's not just bloating and gas. You are also swollen from surgery. When I went back to work yesterday, I could button my pants, but I had lost almost 10 lbs. It's due to the swelling. My dr said it could take 4-6 wks for the swelling to go down from the surgery. I was on my pain meds for 6 days. Day 6 was just to help me sleep. As far as pain on day 9, I am sore...maybe uncomfortable depending on which way I move. It gets better every day. Everyone is different. I hope this helps. Hang in there. -
First, I was wondering when you first weighed. I am 6 days post op and haven't weighed yet. I am scared I haven't lost anything because my belly actually looks bigger than before. I am sure it's from swelling and the co2 gas, but it looks pretty bloated. When does this bloated look go away? My second question is more personal. When did you have your first bowel movement? I haven't had one yet, so I need to look in my pprwk to see when I need to take something like MOM. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I am really, really down today and doubting my sleeve. I am 8 days out and this has been the hardest day so far. I have been weepy on and off all day. I think part of it is that I am going back to work tomorrow and leaving the safe cocoon of my home. I think part of it is that I didn't have an easy recovery and sail through surgery and recovery like everyone said I would. But, the icing on the cake was running to the grocery store for some more skim milk. I could barely hold it together in the store. Seeing all the food that I have given up for the next 6 months almost pushed me over the edge. I know that this was the best decision for my health....especially my arthritic knees. My head can tell me that this is best and going without food is not forever. But, I can't get past the tears of "OMG ....what have a I done to myself?" Has anyone else has a really hard emotional day within the first couple of weeks? And, I have read the thread on depression. I am going to go talk to someone. I just didn't think the depression would affect me. Thanks for listening.

Vitamins have always made me queezy unless I had a full stomach before I take them. So, now the challenge is finding a time to take my Vitamin so I don't get sick. Have you found a good time take your vitamin? Please let me know.

How much Protein?
drysdale replied to twoboysandagirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 8 days out. My NUT told me to get 40 grams while I am on my liquid diet which is 3 wks. Once I switch to mushies, I am suppose to get it to 60 grams. I have found that everyone's dr and NUT is different and that all the diet guidelines are different as well. I hope this helps. -
ok...after reading the 'have you cheated poll' yesterday, I cheated. Not just once, but 3 TIMES!!!! First, I took a finger tip taste of Peanut Butter. That's it....just a small finger tip. Next, I ate the icing from the top of the plastic of some cinnamin rolls, but only from one roll. I just swiped it with my finger and licked it. Lastly, I took a bite from my daughter's chicken strip. I chewed it up and spit it out. I didn't swallow the chicken...just wanted the taste. I don't know what happened yesterday. I completely lost control. So, this morning comes and I have had diarhea all morning. I have had the cold sweats, clammy hands, the works. Is this dumping because I cheated? I am 8 days out from my sleeve and have zero problems until this. Should I call my doctor? I really don't want to tell on myself and my follow up appt is on Thurs. Thoughts? Meanwhile, I have learned my lesson.

I am new to this forum. Just joined last week. I am going to have to agree with the naysayers on this one. This was not the proper place to post this thread and here is why. I am 8 days out. I have had a horrible morning (my own fault). The last thing I want to see if a post about Girl Scout Cookkies when they are even on sale until Jan. I am really struggling just to make it hour by hour and day by day on my 2 wks of Clear Liquids. I already cheated because of the 'who has cheated' thread. I don't think I would have cheated had I not read that thread and all those posts. But ultimately, it was my lack of will power. So to see a thread titled....'the dreaded email' on the Post Op Q&A....it made me read it immediately to see if something was wrong and I could possibly help in some way. Then to read about Girl Scout Cookies that are over a month away, I was a little taken aback and felt misled by the title. Just another point of view from a newbie who is just trying to get through the day.

drysdale replied to misspatrice's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sounds like a WIN to me!! I am only 8 days out so it is good to hear these tips. I can barely get my 48 oz of liquid in rt now but I'm trying. -
Like a Jagged Little Pill
drysdale replied to BZButterfly79's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was told not to take the calcium at the same time as iron for absorption reasons. So check to see if you vitamin as added iron. Also, I bought my B12 sub lingual at Walmart....green bottle called Spring Valley. I think the 2 Flinstones are equal to 1 adult vitamin which is why some people take the Flintstone. Basically, you just need a chewable multi vitamin. Are the vitamins that you are splitting chewable? If not, then try taking them back and explain that you are having surgery and need a chewable. I hope this helps. -
Mother in Law totally AGAINST!!
drysdale replied to MommyTawnie's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Please tell you MIL that the risk of you remaining overweight and having health problems is greater than the risk of VSG surgery. Let her know that you are doing this for yourself, but also for your family so you can be there for them as long as possible. Good luck You are about a week away! I was sleeved 7 days ago and am starting to feel a little normal. -
I am allowed skim milk on my liquid diet. It has 8 grams of Protein. I mix it with Carnation Instant Breakfast for a total of 13 grams of protein. I would also get liquid tylenol. You will need it when you ween yourself from your pain meds. And, one thing that I already had but wasn't listed in supplies was a heating pad. I had some left shoulder pain from the co2 gas. The heating pad on my shoulder felt great. Also, there are protein companies that will sell a sample pack of protein pouches, so you don't have to invest in the big jug and hate it. I ordered a sample pack for unjury.com. They have a chicken Soup protein that I like and they also have a unflavored protein that you can mix into crystal light or eventually foods. Hope this helps.

When to tell???
drysdale replied to VSGandMe2011 (DisneyMomma)'s topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Disney.....somehow, you will know when to tell and who. We all have different reasons for telling or not telling. I told very few people for 2 reasons. First, I have been on so many diets that I have this fear of failure that I am dealing with. I don't want people to know and then me fail to lose weight. My brain tells me there is no way this sleeve will fail, but those are my thoughts. My other issue is people will look at me and think I am not heavy enough to have had the procedure. I am just above 200 and need to lose about 75 lbs. Other than my husband and my daughter, my mom is the only family member who knows. She thinks I should tell other members, but I am not ready yet. And, I will never tell the inlaws. I wouldn't mind my mom and pop in law knowing, but I have a sister that would tell everyone under the sun and make inappropriate comments. So, I just have to figure out how to make it through 3 Christmas dinners. If you feel compelled to tell others, then you should. If you don't ever want to, then that is okay too. I just feel like once it is out there then there is no taking it back. That is why I have kept mine a secret so far. Who knows how I will feel in 3 months or 6 months? I'll know when I get there. I just think at this point, you should only tell the people you know will be absolutely 100% supportive so you don't second guess your decision. Good luck! I'm one week out and am sore, but thrilled! -
Protein drinks gagging me
drysdale replied to HeresKimmy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I don't have any links to support this. My NUT was the one who told me this. This is what I do know about Proteins. There are basically 2 forms...complete and incomplete. Complete are derived from animal proteins (meats, milk, cheese, eggs, dairy) and incomplete come from vegetables. Incomplete are missing one or more of the amino acids necessary to be considered a complete protein. I am not sure what type of protein is in a packet of Carnation Instant Breakfast, but I know there is 8 grams of complete proteins in the skim milk that is added. The total for the drink is 13 grams of protein. I just responded to the shakes question on this thread. I also used the unjury chicken Soup to get my protein in and I can also stomach the Atkins shakes if I need one to go. If you will notice, most of the protein shakes/drinks contain approx. 15 grams of protein.....Atkins, Isopure, Muscle Milk, etc. And, whey protein is a dairy based protein from animals, so it too is a complete protein. As for a company making a product that contains more protein than necessary, these supplements are typically not regulated by the FDA. There are alot of things on the market that shouldn't be. The protein bullets that contain 35 grams of protein were created for body builders not bariatric patients. Also, in the fine print of the protein bullet that I bought (called Instant liquid Protein Shot 35), it says do not use if you have been given a blood thinner. I was given a blood thinner shot right before I was released from the hospital, so I am avoiding them for awhile. That's about all I know. I'm just trying to follow this 2 wks of Clear liquids and get through it until I can add cream Soups. I hope this helps. -
What is wrong with my stomach!!!!!
drysdale replied to loserlia's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have a sensitive stomach so I was very anxious about the nausea. I only had it twice and it passed quickly. I talked to my Dr prior to my surgery about my issue and he gave me a presciption for nausea. It's a little patch that I wear behind my rt ear. Each patch lasts 3 days and he prescribed 4 of them. I guess they are working since I have not been queezy. The patch is called Scopolamine Patch. Check with your Dr and see if you can have him call it in for you. It might help. Good luck and I hope you feel better. -
Protein drinks gagging me
drysdale replied to HeresKimmy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I drink Carnation Instant Breakfast No Sugar with 1 cup of skim milk. It's 13 gr of protein and 8 oz of your liquids. Remember, you body can only absorb between 20-25 grams at a time so anything more during one sitting is a waste. I found the Bariatric solutions and Muscle Milk disgusting. I had to pour them out. -
Just sleeved on Tues and have questions about the pain
drysdale posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was sleeved on 12/7 and released from the hospital yesterday. I guess this would be day 3. I have difficulties taking pain meds...they make me throw up. So I have a pain med, but it doesn't seem to help much. Can someone please tell me how long the pain lasts? Please let me know so I can get an avg time. Today was really rough, so I need to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Thanks. -
I thought I was going to avoid this pain since I am on day 4. I took a nap today and woke up with the most excutiating pain in my left shoulder and my left arm was a litlte sore. I was told that the CO2 gas was the cause. Anyone else have this pain? If so, how long did it last? And, how do I get rid of it? Walk more? Please help.

How long does the swelling last on your stomach? I know everyone is different, but I'm concerned that I won't be able to fit in my clothes when I have to go back to work.
