This scares me too. I called my surgeon's office last week to see how long they usually have people take off. They said 2 weeks max. I work 11 hour days and am walking most of that time. I think I am going to take a third week off using vacation time. I don't know if I will be energetic enough to take that on after 2 weeks.

starting my journey
lisabug replied to korystephenson's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
It's hard because we have failed in the past with other things. This is not going to be the magic bullet but it is definitely a great tool. I am sorry your family is not being supportive. I had that fear, but once I explained why I am doing this and the success that people have had with this, I now have family support. I'm having surgery dec 1, so I will keep you posted on my journey. The more I read, the more things I know to expect. We all have fears along with the excitement. Good luck and let us know if you need anything. -

Vicki, I am sorry you are having a rough few days, but I am sure you will make it through with flying colors. I am sure by this time next month when I am posting the same thing, you will be able to tell me that it gets easier each day. I agree that we will all be telling people where to go when they say we are taking the easy way out. Hugs

WAAY to fast- and kinda freaky
lisabug replied to cheechtrish's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If you can show 6 months of supervised weight loss with your pcp, you should be fine. Aetna responds quickly. Your pcp will have to write a summary of diet and weight for 6 consecutive months. -

They just want to make sure you are doing for the right reasons and that you understand that it will be a lifestyle change. It is pretty easy. Don't worry the psych eval. Good luck on the last 10 lbs. You can do it.

3 months post op, 6 weeks pregnant
lisabug replied to texashopeful's topic in Pregnancy with Weight Loss Surgery
The first trimester is the worst. You only have a few more weeks so hopefully things will get easier. I haven't been sleeved yet, but had horrible morning , noon and night sickness. The only thing I could eat was beef Jerky for the first few months. It was weird, both times I have been pregnant, I just woke up one day and it was gone. Still had the issues with smells and certain foods. Still can't smell raw meat and my youngest is 2 years old. It is making me feel sick as I type this. Congrats on your pregnancy!! If people wait until the perfect time to have children, most of us wouldn't be here. -
That is a tough one. I can understand about the ex and not wanting him to know. I am also a daughter and I know how upset I would be not knowing that my mom was having surgery and she didnt tell me I guess it depends what your relationship is like with your kids. People can surprise you. I am 34 and did not want to tell my father for the risk of judgement. I decided to tell him because I knew no matter what he thought I was happy with my decision. It was the best thing I did. I explained why I was doing this. He is very supportive. As for the co-workers, if you don't feel comfortable telling them. Don't tell them. If they ask tell them you are trying a new diet that you have to drink Protein shakes 2 meals a day and work your way up from there.

My surgeon doesn't require it unless you have a history of heartburn or previous surgeries. All dr's are different.

I had to have a colonoscopy earlier this year. I was drinking the rest of stuff they gave me from the bathroom. So glad I don't have to do this for surgery. Horrible is all I can say.

Good luck Vicki!!! Only 4 weeks behind you. Just think next year at this time we will be able to help the newbies thru this process!! I can't wait to start and to be able to post goal achieved.

USING ADIPEX DURING THE PREOP DIET PHASE
lisabug replied to dih's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Do you have to do the 3 or 6 month supervised diet for insurance approval? That is the only reason I can see for needing to take a diet pill or if your surgeon wants you to lose weight pre op. My pcp put me on phentramine during the 3 month supervised, but I hated how it made me feel. I took adipex years ago and lost weight and gained it right back after stopping it. -
Hives are horrible!!! I have had them a few times for different reasons. My first time was from an antibiotic that I had finished the day before and broke out for a week. The last time I had them was when I was pregnant. They said it was from a hormone surge. Your body is going through so much, it is anybody's guess. Benadryl cream was my savior. Also ask if you can take benadryl at bedtime. Hopefully it clears up soon.

The waiting game
lisabug replied to gotamakeachange's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
All insurance companies that cover bariatric surgery need to cover the sleeve. It is crazy that most of them only cover lap band and Rny. -
I haven't had surgery yet, but I had my gallbladder taken out. My back was what hurt the most from the gas. It was on my right side around where my kidney is. Walking was how I relieved it. It's a struggle between walking and not over doing it. As long as you are staying hydrated you are doing fine.

The waiting game
lisabug replied to gotamakeachange's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
What insurance companies do you have? Aetna is very quick on approval. I was approved within 2 days after everything was submitted. Hope time flies for you both. I have surgery dec 1. -
I chose sleeve because I didn't want anything to do with re-routing of my intestines. I also have had a few friends have bypass and the dumping syndrome is horrible and they stretched their pouch back out and gained most of their weight back. I think the sleeve is a better choice for me. I need the restriction, but do not want the malabsorption. The results are similar. Some studies show bypass a little higher on weight loss immediately , but overall the sleeve is the only option for me.

I know my dr has instructed me no caffiene, no alcohol and no carbonated beverages for 3 months post op. They all can irritate the healing stomach. My dr recommended to cut out caffiene pre op so that we aren't dealing with withdrawal on top of everything else post op. Giving up caffiene is easier said than done.

Struggling with liquid diet
lisabug replied to Monday_thru_Friday's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had problems with 24 hour when I had my gallbladder taken out. I am not looking forward to the pre op diet. I only have to do it 3 days. Have you tried eating sf jello? It is at least something in your tummy. I don't know about post op, but from what I have read food is the last thing on your mind. Trying to get enough liquids is difficult with the tiny tummy. You can do it. It is a necessary evil. -
I am having my surgery Dec 1st. I know it will be awhile before I can eat some foods. I have not met with my nutritionist yet to go over my post op diet yet. I work crazy hours so I am a little concerned with eating healthy post op. What kind of meals do you eat for lunch? I do not have a lot of time to cook, so any suggestions would be great. How many times of day do you eat? I know Protein is first priority along with 64 oz of Water. Lisa from St Louis

My husband and I went out to dinner tonight. I was debating between two things on the menu. I thought to myself oh I will have that next time. Half way through dinner it hit me, there isn't going to be a next time for awhile. I am having surgery in a month. When I got home I was going through the mail and my pre-op diet had been sent to me. I was happy to see that I only have 3 days of clear liquids pre op and can have protein shakes with skim milk during those 3 days. Wow this is really going to happen soon.

Is anybody else worry about what weight loss is going to do to their marriage? I have a pretty solid marriage now, but I'm not sure if is going to be able to handle other people paying more attention to me.

From everything I have read buyer's remorse is very normal in the first week. Second week is a little better and it continues to get better after that. I am trying to prepare myself for that. I am guessing once you see the weight coming off and you get to start eating food and feeling better then it gets easier. Good luck and try to be patient. There are a lot of great posts on this forum that will help you through this.

My dr told me to wait at least 3 months to have alcohol and to be very careful because it affects you differently after surgery. Obviously it should be very moderate during losing phase due to the empty calories in alcohol.
