  1. Posted something similar to this on another thread just a few minutes ago. I don't want to hassle with the insurance. I deal with insurance idiocy in my job every day, and I want to be in the driver's seat with my health issues. I had surgery scheduled with Dr. Aceves, but had to cancel due to knee injury/surgery problems. I will be rescheduling when these problems are resolved...not when someone else tells me I can. Do I have control issues??? Surely not:)

    Nervous about Mexico Surgery!!

I believe a lot of the of the pre-op counseling and consults are required by insurance companies who pay for these procedures. That is why it sometimes takes months to get scheduled for surgery. I think I would rather pay out of my own pocket and be in the driver's seat as far as the who, where and when of my surgery than have it all dictated by an insurance company, and you still end up paying out-of-pocket expense with insurance. My theory may be all wet, but my daughter did her research, made her decision and had her surgery done, all within about 2 months' time. Just my 2 cents :thumbup1:

    Aceves Patients: Surgery Schduling...

I scheduled 8-12-10 around the first of July with no problem at all. Ended up having to cancel that date due to knee injury/surgery, but am hoping to reschedule sometime in September. You should have no problem...

    12 Week Comparison Photos

You guys look great, and how wonderful you are making this journey together. My sleeve was scheduled for 8-12 but was postponed due to a knee injury/surgery. I can't wait to join the losers' bench...

    Sleeved for 5 hours now!

Congrats!! I was scheduled for 8-12 but had to cancel due to recent knee surgery that didn't turn out well. Was looking forward to meeting you in person. Hope everything continues going well for you...keep us posted:thumbup:

    I'm finally in Mexicali

Oh my goodness, Skye. In exactly 2 weeks I will be where you are! I am scheduled for 8-12-10 in Mexicali with Dr. Aceves, of course. When I think about it like that, I get a little nervous. I am having knee surgery tomorrow, and I am a little concerned about being under anesthetic 2 times in 2 weeks, but my ortho doc said he thought I would be fine. My daughter, nurse_ally (Allison), was sleeved on 7-1-10 and she is doing very well. I am glad you are doing so well. I will keep watching this thread to follow your progress.

    very disappointed in this site

I agree with pcindy. I responded to your first thread and alluded to the fact that you probably received the wrong drug. I too have ICU experience and have given versed IV too many times to count. I am just thankful you are here to "complain":001_smile: about the site. I hope you decide to stay with us. Keep us posted on your road to recovery from this frightening experience. I do hope you will continue to reconsider the sleeve.

    Went for surgery on 6/25

From your description of the event, I am wondering if it really was midazolam that was given. It is not technically a paralytic. It was either not the medication you were told or it was an ungodly dose. I am just glad you are doing well physically now. I know it will take a while for you to overcome the emotional trauma, and I imagine your mom is still very gun shy, too. I do hope you will reconsider the sleeve at some point. From reading here, it seems to a positive life change for many people. My daughter was sleeved by Dr. Aceves on 7-1-10 and I am scheduled for 8-12-10. Maybe letting more time pass and doing a little more research during that time will help your confidence return. At any rate, I wish you good health and happiness. Kathe

    Calling all Nurses.....

I am a registered nurse with background in ICU, home health and now oncology in Oklahoma City. As you can tell by my username, I am ?nurse_ally?s mom.? What a fortunate person I am. :biggrin0: I have fought the weight battle my whole life, literally. I cannot remember a time when weight and food did not control my life. My lowest weight as an adult was 128 (I was underweight for 2 days!!!!) and my highest was 303 (sometime within the last year and a half). I have a cousin who had RNY several years ago, and he is still overweight...I don't know why because we have never really discussed it. Being a nurse I have taken care of several patients with complications from RNY and banding, and I knew that would never be a option for me. I am miserable and just supposed that is the way the rest of my life would be with hypertension, knee pain, diabetes (newly diagnosed), c-pap, etc, etc, etc. And Allison was heading that same direction. Here we go...I guess Allison must have been researching this for some time, but one day she told me she was getting sleeved. I had already heard of this from a coworker who was thrilled with the results, but that is as far as it went. I questioned her about the procedure, talked about the expense and that is when she told me she was going to Mexico to have it done. My response...HAVE YOU LOST YOUR MIND?!?!?!?!?!?!!!!! We spent many hours discussing her research and I went through the process with her of deciding which surgeon, location and so forth. With the feeling that she had done her research well, I jumped on board for her to go ahead. She was sleeved by Dr. Aceves on 7-1-10, is back home and doing well at this point, and I am scheduled to be sleeved by Dr. Aceves on 8-12-10. So there you go!!! For her my thoughts are that I don't want her to live the life I have lived if there is any possible way to avoid it. My weight has controlled everything I have ever done, and I have missed out on a lot of fun times because I was too big to participate or just flat didn't feel like it. She is a remarkable young woman with the responsibility of two awesome children, and she needs to be released from Fat Prison. For me my thoughts are if there is even a chance that I may get rid of the extra person I have been carrying around on my back for the last 20 years, I'm there!!! That's my story in a nutshell. I could go on and on, but those of us in this boat don't need all the details...you have already lived it. Thanks for starting this thread, Kathy. It is good to have others who relate to us in more ways that just getting sleeved. My parting thought for now?LET'S GET THIS SHOW ON THE ROAD!! Kathe

    What to tell your boss??

I am a nurse in an outpatient oncology clinic. There are only two people in my office who know about my upcoming surgery. Pretty much the whole office knows about my daughter (nurse_ally), but these two are sworn to secrecy and I am sure I can trust them. I just don't want to have to explain or discuss any of this before the event. I am not ashamed or anything like that, I just don't want to discuss it. Afterwards, when (not if) it becomes noticable that I am losing weight, I may tell them. The way I look at it, it really is my personal business and I am not required to tell all to everyone. Allison was sleeved on 7-1-10 by Dr. Aceves, and she is scheduled to go back to work Sat night 7-10. I think she feels good enough although she is just a little tender. I am taking off just two days more than she did. I think that should be plenty unless you have a really physical job. Good luck!!

    Why now?

Hi Cajun. I just joined this forum yesterday and it looks like you have been here for a while. I have fought the weight battle my whole life, literally. I cannot remember a time when weight and food did not control my life. I am miserable and just supposed that is the way the rest of my life would be with hypertension, knee pain, diabetes (newly diagnosed), c-pap, etc, etc, etc. And my 33-year-old daughter (nurse_ally in the forum) was heading that direction. Here we go...I guess Allison (nurse_ally) must have been researching this for some time, but one day she told me she was getting sleeved. I had already heard of this from a coworker who was thrilled with the results, but that is as far as it went. Has anyone gone out of the country alone?

Blackberry, I have just joined this site because I saw your post last night on my daughter's login. As I type this, she is in the San Diego airport waiting for her return flight after her sleeve, and mine is scheduled for 8-12-10. If you are trying to schedule the 2nd week of August, we might just be sleeve mates. That way, neither one of us would really be travelling alone, because we have already "met". Look forward to hearing from others on the site.
