Nervous about pre-op diet
Donna4545 replied to Donna4545's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm almost done with my 2 week pre op diet--things got better after Day 6, and now I actually don't mind it at all. I've got 3 more days until surgery, and I'm glad I stuck to the diet. -
I had my last meal Friday night at the best restaurant in town, and except for the bread and wine, I stuck to my diet. I had swordfish and asparagus with a mozzarella salad. You can enjoy a last meal without totally "blowing it". Surgery is Wednesday.

Hey--reality check! After your stomach heals, you can still eat what you like, just in small amounts--no food funerals are needed. Kick yourself in the butt and decide you're going to get serious about this surgery. Have two low carb, high protein shakes a day, a salad with homemade dressing for snack, a dinner of 4-6 oz lean meat and a non-starchy vegetable, and 64 oz of water a day. that's what I'm doing, I'm not hungry, and I've lost 11 pounds so far. See my blog for how I got through it. You can do this!

My BMI was 51, and I get sleeved on Wed. No one mentioned me losing faster than low BMI people, but I didn't ask. Then again, I didn't care, lol--weight loss is weight loss!

July 2010's NEW losers!
Donna4545 replied to mellifrits's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
2 days to go for me too. I leave on tues (the surgeon is 100 miles away) and have surgery on Wed 7/14. I'm taking my laptop with me, lol, so you'll hear all about it (once I'm in the hotel again--Thurs). -
Go by carbs period. But net carbs is carbs minus fiber.

July 2010's NEW losers!
Donna4545 replied to mellifrits's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm down 11.5 lbs, and am getting sleeved 7/14/10. I can't wait to be post op! -
After making a few attitude and effort adjustments, I've made peace with the pre-op diet. One more week and I'm on the table! I'm not nervous or anything--is that normal? I just feel kind of matter-of-fact about it. Gonna get sleeved. Yup.

Dr. Helbling at St. Alexius Hospital in Bismarck, ND.

Congrats! You could try mixing some isopure zero carb powder in with your water--it mixes really well and could help you get your protein in. The flavors I have are vanilla and banana creme and they taste fine to me.
-
Congrats! I hope you have a great recovery!

Hang in there. It gets easier--I'm on day 6 of mine and I've totally made peace with it.

Looking For Others Who Are Struggling with Emotional Eating Plz
Donna4545 replied to FreeToBeMe's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I have the problem of getting angry for not being able to eat what I want. It's weird. I hope it goes away after the surgery--it just showed up during the pre-op diet. -
I found TSA friendly 3.4 oz vials of flavored liquid protein. 40 grams of protein in one of them. I got them at the Supplement Warehouse website--just search on liquid protein 3 oz.
-
Wow--good luck tomorrow. I'm up 7/14--about a week from now. I've made peace with the pre-op diet, and can't believe that this is actually going to happen. I've been trying to do this since 2002!

Insurance paid even though no bariatric clause anyone?
Donna4545 replied to blondie1007's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Actually you could contact my bariatric clinic and see if they have a list of other clinics in the pilot program. I'm pretty sure she said it was a national project. The nurse's name is Jean, and the number is 701-530-6330. -

No, they didn't deny me. They approved within 3 days. The bariatric center I went to was in some sort of pilot research program with BCBS--I think that's why there wasn't a problem. You could try to find a program that is also in the BCBS pilot program for the vertical sleeve gastrectomy. -
We have the same pre-op diet, except that I can eat any lean meat and have a salad but no fruit. Today was so much easier than the first 4 days!
-
Chica-how much protein are we supposed to have? My doc says 40 grams in shakes and the rest in a 4-6 oz portion of lean meat.
-
I'm on day 5 of my pre-op diet and have finally figured out how to do it without being hungry. I was whining all over the place until about 10am today. What exactly does your diet consist of? I hope you are having an easier first few days than I did.

You are having surgery on my birthday! My surgery is 7/14/10. Stock up on protein powder, cream soups, flavored sugar free syrups (for less boring shakes), sugar free pudding, and buy some 4 oz ramekins or bowls to get you used to the new portion sizes. Good luck! Check my blog if you want the blow-by-blow account of my experience, since I'll be a week ahead of you.

I don't even own a scale. I just eat like I'm supposed to and get weighed at the doctor's office. It's the only way I can keep my sanity. Hang in there!

I am in hell. 9 more days until surgery and the pre-op diet is making me insane. I'm always hungry, especially between dinner and bed. I hate being hungry! I am doing it exactly the way my dr. said, drinking 64 oz water/day, no carbs etc. I want to eat the world!:scared0:

RE: Pre-op diet (shakes + Atkins dinner) OK, now that I've whined and moaned, I pulled out the info from the bariatric program and found the following: I can have a 1 cup salad in addition, and I can make my own dressing for it--woo! So I got up and went to the store, and got a brainstorm while I was there--I can season my meat any way I want--so why not with pico de gallo (chopped raw garlic, onion, tomato, cilantro)? I'm getting excited about dinner. I picked up some asparagus that I'm going to dress with a ginger vinagrette. I just need to get over myself lol, and get creative with it!
