  1. How did it go? I also went through WLS alone, but the hospital staff was so great, it didn't matter.

Newly sleeved and loving it- 7/15/10

Thanks everybody!! It's day 2 and I'm perfectly happy. I almost can't believe I had major surgery! I'm completely up and around (though I burp a lot).
  3. I was sleeved yesterday (7/14/10) and had some annoying shoulder pain that went away when they took the drain out. Other than that, getting a cold was more traumatic than my surgery. No major pain, just slight annoyance/soreness around incisions, but only when I move the wrong way. I am in such a good mood about it--optimistic and ready to follow the post-op diet to the letter. In case you're curious, my post op diet is: 1st 3 days: clear liquids Next week: full liquids Week 3: Pureed Week 4: Transition to solids-mushies Week 5: Solids Try to keep each meal under 8 carbs and try for a daily goal of no more than 30 carbs. Protein: 50-60 grams per day Fat: lowfat as possible Liquids: 64 oz/day

    so tired and weak

I'm just 2 days out, but I can get all my fluids in by doing the "sippy sippy" all day. I think you just have to get used to it--no gulps or regular swallows, that will make your tummy hurt. I've been doing IsoPure Plus RTD drinks to make sure I get protein and liquid in at the same time (double duty) while on clears. So far I've got a burping issue, but I've seen others say that will go away. If it hurts you to even drink sippy style, definitely call your surgeon. Good luck!
  5. Congrats on your date. Here are my lists: Pre-op and post op: Atkins Advantage Shakes; RTD Isopure Plus clear Protein drink Pre and post: IsoPure Zero carb/sugar vanilla protein powder DaVinci sugar free flavored syrups to use with the vanilla powder Crystal Lite (lots of flavors) Jello Ready to Eat unrefrigerated fat free chocolate puddings 4 oz. ramekins for portion control post-op Baby silverware and toddler bowls for portion control post-op 2 oz baby food ice trays for freezing stuff during the puree phase Low salt cream soups Gerber's 4oz RTD apple juice Huge amounts of Lipton's Diet Green Tea A small chopper/mini food processor A Blender Bottle for making shakes unjury chicken stock protein powder (individual packets) I gave all the carbs in the house to a co-worker--rice and Pasta. Gerber's 4 oz applesauce Gerber's 2nd level 4 oz green Beans I was totally prepared for everything. Now that I've had the surgery, I just reach for what I want. Good luck to you. I had a hard time on the pre-op diet for the first 5 days, but after that it got easier. Donna

    Calling all experts

Try making deviled eggs with lowfat mayonnaise, but instead of stuffing the mixture in the shells, just pure the whole thing. It might be a change of pace, and gives you some protein. Add a little paprika and brown mustard to kick it up a notch!

4 Months Out - I AM NOT the Biggest Loser

Good for you for re-focusing. You can do it!
  8. I've seen several people post that when they upped their protein and calories a little, they felt better and started losing again. Hope that helps, and good luck!
  9. Maybe I'm weird but I feel great, and it's the day after I was discharged. The first day was the only really uncomfortable day, in the hospital after the surgery Wednesday. I was irritable for the pre-op diet's first few days, but post op is going fine so far (knock on wood). I actually feel more optimistic and energized post op than I did pre-op. We probably go those these phases at different times--I'm sure it depends on the person, and if there are other stresses are going on around them.
  10. Here I sit in the hotel drinking the godawful required bottle of magnesium citrate and trying not to go crazy from drinking only clears for a full day. If I can get through tonight, I can get through anything.

    July 2010's NEW losers!

I'm back in my hotel--got sleeved yesterday morning. So far it's been a cakewalk, really. No pain, healthy liver, something to look forward to. My surgeon rocks--he does 4 different kinds of leak tests before you're discharged. That really adds to my peace of mind. The nurse told me not to weigh the first week because there will be extra weight from IV fluids. So, I'm 1 day out, feeling great, and I hope all the new sleevers have a good post-op experience!
  13. You asked if you should notify your college so the professors would know if you had problem. That is the question you asked and I answered. I didn't assume anything, just gave you a truthful answer based on 15 years of university teaching. I'm sorry you took it personally in a negative way. If you are really worried about what your profs think of you it's a good idea to remember that professors have a point of view that is quite different from yours.

I'm sorry you had complications. Just keep moving forward and get your protein in. You will be in my prayers.

    July 2010's NEW losers!

I hope everything goes well with you! One thing I didn't expect was pain in the left shoulder. The nurse said it was gas. It's 5am thurs and that's the only pain I have left, and it's not that bad.
  16. That's what I said. But you asked a question and I answered. It sounds like you didn't like the answer. Sorry, but it's truth.
  17. I had chest xray, blood work, ecg, physical and medical history, pulmonnologist consult because I have asthma, psych eval, nutrition class. The xray and ecg and blood work were done in my gps office, the psych eval, nutritionist, surgeon consult, and info session weRe all on the same day in the bariatric cliNic. These tests had to be within 30 days of surgery

    July 2010's NEW losers!

Thanks so much! Update 10Pm. I've been feeling much better since 7pm.I walked around the unit with the nurses and it felt good. Newbies you have nothing to fear from the hospital day. At least for me you heal pretty quickly even if your tummy takes longer.they let me start sipping ice Water at 7pm and that felt great. Tomorrow I can have popsicles. I'll be discharged tomorrow afternoon. The reason I'm posting from the hospital is this is the kind of stuff I wanted to know so I figured maybe someone else would. I brought a bunch of magazines to read but I Haven't had time because the nurses kept me so busy monitoring vitals and asking how I felt. If you're looking for a really comforting and competent place to have your surgery st.alexius in bismark nd is the place to go. They also have special agreements with bcbs so insurance is a breeze. Anyway I'm glad I did this and all the other july sleevers are in my prayers.

    July 2010's NEW losers!

I'm sending this from my hospital bed. Surgery went well. I did have sharp pain at at one incision. The rest have no pain. I felt nausea right after but they Gave me meds and then I was fine. My stomach muscles are sore like a heavy workout. I do have a drain, I can't even tell it's there. It comes out tomorrow when I get my 4th and last leak test. They said they are going to get me walking tonite. The staff here are excellent. All of them! It made a huge difference.

    Starting Pre-op diet

I had the two week diet. It was hard for the first five days. If you get hungry and have to cheat, do it with a low carb Protein shake. Of course, I am unable to take my own advice and over the course of the 2 weeks had 2 biscuits and some wine. I blame PMS. But I got back on the horse afterwards and kept going with the prescribed diet. I've lost about 15 pounds, so I'm sure my liver is fine (surgery is today). If not, I'll find out soon enough!. One thing that really helped me were DaVinci sugar free flavored syrups, which I put into Isopure Zero Carb Protein powder to make shakes whatever flavor I wanted, instead of buying a bunch of different flavored protein powders. This saved me more than once from the mind numbing repetition of shake after shake of the same flavor or couple flavors. Tip: make sure you have some IsoPure Pluz zero sugar/carb clear RTD for the day before surgery and the 2 days after surgery when you're on clears. It lets you get your Water and your protein in at the same time. They are totally worth the price, and the protein keeps you from feeling so tired. I used the grape flavor. It wasn't great, but it was doable, and doable was what I needed. Good luck the pre-op diet. You can see my blog for my struggles lol. Well, it's off the shower and then to the hospital. Next time you hear from me I'll be sleeved! Cheers, Donna PS another tip-if they give you a bottle of magnesium citrate or other laxative to take the day before surgery, don't take it in the afternoon or you'll be having diarrhea all night. Take it around noon to give it plenty of time to get out of your system before bedtime--and read the bottle, there are some important instructions on there about how to take it. Good luck!
  22. Hi, I'm a prof, and I don't think it's necessary to do that unless you need specific accommodations. To be perfectly honest, it's your choice to take a leave of absence or not. If you're going to go to school, then go--it's going to look like you're making excuses for poor performance if you tell your prof you can't concentrate because you had surgery. From the prof's point of view, if you aren't healthy enough to be in school, you should be on leave until you are fully healed. I mean you are graded on your work. Saying "I had surgery" won't change that C into a B.
  23. I've survived the pre-op diet. Insurance is paying. Surgery is in 2 days. I should be really happy but I'm not. I feel really blah. Does anyone else have this? Thoughts?
  24. Donna4545

    gulp! here we go!!

I'm on clears too, and have to be at the hospital at 5:45am tomorrow for surgery. I'm not watching anything with food in it lol--on purpose! I don't think I could stand it! Good luck tomorrow!
