  1. Sorry I took so long to get back to you. My mother inlaw was here for a month in the midst of getting all my preop testing done. All I need now is psych and nutritionist on April 23 thats the soonest i could get in.

If insurance does not approve it ever I still doing self pay but not to Mexico my PCP says I will be able to get better care here if I have it done here if their are complications. I'm looking at Dr Mark Pleatman in Michigan and Abbington right here in Phil area they are about $11,400 but if Im here no air fare or hotel or rental car still working out all the kinks but I have time to get it figured out.

Are you still looking? and have you had any appointments?

  2. I'm looking at Dr Aceves in Mexacali. Its all inclusive at about $8,700 not including airfare. The reviews on him are great and so are his credentials. I am just not looking forward to the flight home (from San Diego)its just so long.In the mean time still looking at Temple. Ill let you know what happens. I think I'm figuring out how to use this board.

  3. Thanks for the info. Wow! I think it's great that you're fighting and that they are willing to fight with you. Hopefully you get approved. I chose the sleeve because it didn't involve any malabsorption. That's what scares me - all the side effects and such and not being able to absorb certain medicines, etc. And if it came down to it where I had to absolutely choose, I'd skip on the bypass and go for the duodenal switch - which is basically the sleeve with an intestinal reroute and not as many side effects as the bypass.

How much is the surgery in Mexico? I hadn't done much research just because I didn't think I could afford it. I know it's like pennies on the dollar compared to the cost here. I've read others' stories about how wonderful their experience was.

  4. Your not being a pest at all.

I went to Temple on Sat. Said he thinks the sleeve will be right up there with the bypass. I have an appointment with him on the 16th. I felt good when I left there. Went to U of Penn seminar on Monday night and was very disappointed. I asked how many sleeves were done there he said 6. I don't want to be #7. As far as I'm concerned it was a waste of my Monday night. Temple is kind of far but it seems to be the only place for me personally so far. I'm going thru all the hoops but my insurance will not cover sleeve unless BMI over 50 I am not, you know the story, I'm going to try and fight it and sub the bypass for sleeve they said they will help with insurance denials. Its a 50/50 chance if not I will still have all my info to go to Mexico. I'm researching Drs there now. I;m hoping either insurance will change soon and cover it or I can scrape together the cash to go to Mexico.

    Talk to you soon

    Just getting my toes wet

That's awesome - I've heard that if you and your doctor keep fighting for it they might do it. Not necessarily the doctor, but the nurses and other accounting people in the office. It seems that what we get when we call isn't what they get when they call - which may have been why I was told it was approved. As for my journey, It's been slow :sad0: - Just really busy at work but things are slowing down and I'm ready to get in gear again! I love your positive attitude and have decided to try it anyway. However, if after fighting the battle for some time and I can't get the sleeve, my last resort would be the DS (the second part of the Sleeve). I would love to go to Mexico, but I just can't afford it :biggrin2: Anyway, keep me posted - I've been calling different places and Abington is friendly but they seem to never get approved for sleeve (even though they do a lot of them). I like that uPenn & Temple are close, I just don't like the fact that they have a lot of students there. And thanks for giving me the heads up on Bryn Mawr - that WOULD have been my next stop :laugh0: Good luck - let me know how your seminars go. Maybe I'll see you at one of them some day. Tina

I have Keystone Healthplan East (group policy). It's an HMO, so the fact that they said it was covered surprised me.

Thanks for the warm welcome! For now I just know that the insurance covers the procedure, so I'm PRAYING that the requirements aren't extremely complicated (which I'm sure they are). I've talked to them several times and they keep reassuring me that the procedure (based on the code) is covered 100% with no stipulations - and for the most part all I need is the surgeon's approval. Whatever the case may be, I'm trying to be as informed as possible going in. As for a surgeon, I'm looking around. There aren't many who seem to do it in the area. I've found Temple, uPenn, and Abington Memorial.
  10. Hello everyone! I'm new to the site and WLS all together. After researching all the options I am liking VSG the most. I spoke with my insurance company today and was told that this procedure is covered (does that tell you just how new I am to this game? lol ). I was super excited JUST to hear that. So now I'm off to start my journey to a new and possibly chub-free me (or at least a healthier me that's comfortable in the skin she's in)! I have the support of my doctor, now I just need to find a program/surgeon I like and get started. I've read horror stories about people not being approved, but according to my PCP I am a good candidate. I've been reading a lot of your posts and I feel extra encouraged right now . I'm sure I'll have some questions, and if you want feel free to send me any suggestions/advice you have that might be helpful. Wish me luck - and I look forward to chatting with you all :001_tongue: Talk to you soon!
