pre-op How to educate my teen about my surgery
jrogersok posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm starting this journey with my psych, nutritionist, etc. later this month. I am struggling with how to educate my almost 13 year old daughter about why I am doing this. She also is extremely overweight (approx. 210) so I feel a bit guilty that I'm taking on this without her. Any ideas on how I can best educate her about what I'm doing so that she's not scared? She doesn't feel that she has a weight issue, but she does (probably tanks to me!) -
wow! 62 lbs at 3 months. That just sounds almost too good to be true. Makes me want my surgery tomorrow! Thanks for the post.

I'm new too. Started the process in July but moving slowly due to a move of residence and work responsibilities. Looking forward to following you on your journey.

Torn between sleeve and rny. . .anyone been here?

Thanks to everyone for the posts. Very helpful as I make my decision. I've researched all the options for years and was pretty scared of the RNY so am ecstatic that a lot of insurances are covering the sleeve now. My boss at work had the RNY about 2 years ago and her daughter is having the sleeve next month. My boss told me that she's totally happy but if she had it to do over again she would go with the sleeve as it's less invasive (no re-routing) and the studies are showing that the sleeve is just as effective. That's what my Dr told me as well. Hope it helps. -
I'm in the starting stages with all the appointments and totally get what you are saying as far as the fear goes. There's always the fear of the unknown and taking this step is a big decision. I know it has been for me as I've been researching this for over 10 years and am still fearful. Your friend had a good question that I'm going to think about, too "what are you afraid of"... am I afraid that my hips won't hurt and wake me up at night? - NO; afraid that I will fit comfortably in an airplane seat? - NO; afraid that I won't be able to ride certain rides at an amusement park? - NO; afraid that I won't be able to use food for comfort? - YES (it's always been my method for handling stress which is obvious by the weight on the scale this morning at the doctor's - heaviest I've been in about 14 years). I could go on and on, but I guess what's I'm trying to say is yes, this is a SCARY, BIG STEP but from what I'm reading here on the boards it TOTALLY WORTH IT! I'm looking forward to following your journey...of which fear, I'm sure, is a totally reasonable feeling.
