    Lapband and alcohol

I didn't drink any alcohol for the first year. and than I allowed myself to drink my Christmas drink of bailey's and coffee. I would have been hesitate to drink to much with the fear of the nausea and perhaps vomiting that could have occurred. vomiting is a no no. we try hard not to do it. you can still go out with friends but do sip on one drink. you are only a few months from your surgery date.

    Banded February 9

every doctor has their own protocol. liquids can include anything that doesn't require chewing . make your own Soup and emulsify adding enough broth to make it liquid. don't restrict yourself so much but allow yourself all you are allowed to eat. you should have gotten a list from your doctor. be smart and healthy.
  3. it could be as simple as your preop labs weren't in your file. do call and ask for the office manager. I would be pretty pissed if someone cancelled my surgery I was mentally prepared for. but don't give up on yourself because of this glitch. you deserve to be pain free. I know all my othropedic areas are much better. and if you do need surgery on your back etc. it would be better to be lighter for all the therapy that will follow. I wish you the best.

    Nicotine Level Test

what if you are using nicotine patches to quit smoking? just wondering. my pre tests took 16 vials of blood. they tested for things I never heard of before.
  5. Most of you know me. you know that I had bad medical care when I complained to both my surgeon and pcp. they used medications to correct reflux and pain instead of upper gi with barium. so I ended up with a messed up esophagus. I cannot or lets say the doctor will no longer do fills. I have 5 cc in a 14 cc band. I need to diet. as you all know diet doesn't work when your tool isn't helping in the lest. but I can do a bit more to start the wt. loss again. my only option is a revision. if I go that route I will do a ds. it is easy on the esophagus and that's what I need. I got down to 215 when I couldn't eat due to the reflux and pb'ing. I have gained 15lbs when the band was completely empty and have maintained that for months. I just want ppl to listen to their bodies. It isn't normal to have reflux. It isn't normal to have pain. It isn't normal to have your chest pulse so you can see it. doubleing up on medications will not solve the problem. Please when you are having problems insist on a barium swallow. don't fret if you have your band unfilled. at least my band is still there and I have managed to have a slip corrected and most of my esophagus problems corrected. I am going to have next month a full upper gi and lower gi to get a good picture of everything. I would rather keep my band than do a revision. PLEASE PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT YOUR BAND IS TELLING YOU. That is my message.

    Banded February 9

i think just after surgery we all went through this. where they sew your band in place and your port are swollen from the surgery. it almost feels like you have had fills but you have not. also medications can make you feel less hungry. almost all have had their hunger returned. just keep pushing liquids.. you can become very ill if you get dehydrated. try sugar free popsicles they might hit the spot.

    Frustrated

no slip in band. for the first 6 mos. you are on a diet. we call this bandster hell. losing 10 lbs since surgery isn't bad. hunger is a terrible thing to fight, but fight you must. the band eventually will restrict how much you eat. but there is a lot of food we can eat that slides right through, so you must train yourself to eat a 1/2 cup of food 3 times a day. whether you are hungry or not. don't get discouraged, if you follow and get yourself used to the 1/2 cup of food per meal you will succeed in band life. measure your food until you get the feel for the amount. once you do this you will see the wt. start coming off. eat Protein first, vegetable second and lastly if you are able to eat carbs. but still only in small amounts. when you finally get to the green zone you will have trained yourself how much to eat and that amount will satisfy you for hours. I wish you luck. its hard work but worth it. it's harder to fail and than get back on track.

    Any tips for soda cravings?

when you are a little further from your surgery date you (with your doctors permission) could try soda. I used to be a big soda drinker prior to surgery but gave it all up until recently. once in awhile I enjoy a diet soda like ginger ale or cola but I now noticed I get real bloated after drinking one. it's just not worth the discomfort. but you might do just fine. but plz always discuss with your doctor, he or she maybe really against any carbonated drinks.
  9. to the shoulder pain is something we all go through. A heating pad works great and of course moving around helps. the gas will dissipate soon. there is a nerve that runs in the area you are describing, it is the vagal nerve.
  10. I am at the point where my doctor said he will not do anymore fills that I would need a revision. so I began to re read all the info on the different surgeries. I really liked what I read about the duodenal switch. your stomach is removed but the bottom part where the hunger hormone is. the rest of the surgery can be reversed. but the part I liked the most was that the complications were less and ppl didn't have problems with regaining their wt. check it out.

    4.34cc fill discomfort :(

your anatomy is yours alone. I have a 14cc band and have only 5.5 cc in it. and I have restriction. you don't want to create a problem with your band slipping or hurting your esophagus. go to the smaller fill amount and wait a bit. remember we eat as if we have restriction all the time. whether we have it or not.
  12. terrydumont46

    :( Have to start over

the only way to know exactly where you stand is a upper gi. call your doctor office and get a appointment. it might not be as you think it is.

    Bath?

usually you can shower right away but it is awhile before baths and hot tubs. in fact it was 6 weeks before I was allowed in a hot tub.
  14. I developed congested heart failure from all the iv fluids. so I had to stay in the hospital for 4 days instead of the next day discharge. had no complications from the surgery itself.

TV Shows - What are you watching ?

    Severe Constipation: Advice Please

a handful of pecans or almonds o walnuts will help. also 1 ducolox (sp) at night with the miralax. my doctor had me doing 2 miralax a day.
  17. This is a lesson we all need to learn. it isn't always wls causing problems. I have been sick since nov. 5th with fever, chills and sweats. none of the blood tests were saying anything concrete. my doctor said emotional. how can emotions cause fevers of 101 I asked. it can't. so we started with all the medicaitons I take. my blood sugar is back to normal after stopping glucaphage. yes a sugar lowering drug. stopped taking it and my blood sugar dropped. I am still sick, this morning my temp was 100. it makes exercising hard but I am keeping my weight stable, thank you band. your story reminds me not to give up and be resigned to feeling lousy. back to the doctor and ask for a specialist . your story is a great one. I am so glad for you.
  18. This is from someone whose doctor went to fast with fills. I was at 8.5 in a 14 cc band and started to have horrible problems. I have been unfilled and another doctor started slowly and I am at 5.5 where I don't have any problems need to watch what I eat but we should be doing that anyways. slowly if you can afford it is better. it gives you time to adjust. don't think the band will do all the work for you like I thought. some of my damage is irreversible. it is hard when you have no restriction to be patient. but eat as if you do have restriction. so when you do hit the green zone your eating habits are already established. I wish you loads of well wishes

    What's the problem?

this doesn't sound like a band slippage. either you just know how to eat with a band or if you are gaining wt. a slight fill might be needed.
  20. gallbladder is a common problem for wls. but esophageal spasms are very very painful. liquid Carafate is helpful. but it sounds like you need to have a upper gi. a barium swallow to see what is going on. keep us posted
  21. you have been a inspiration to many. congrat's on the 02 lb wt. loss

    Feeling a little discouraged

I think all of us goes into surgery with sugar plums dancing in the air. we have a fantasy about how much weight we are going to lose each and every week. and when we don't it gets us a bit down. as long as you are doing all the right things the weight will come off. stop getting on the scale. as you have already seen it can make you depressed. instead feel how well your clothes are fitting. or how easy it is to walk, instead of the scale concentrate on all the other things weight lost does for us. mine was inches lost and sizes in clothes. happy happy. the scale not so happy. wishing you luck
  23. I was just thinking about my love. I loved French toast with melted butter and powered sugar. oh man. I bought some white bread for the family to make turkey sandwiches with but there were a few pieces left and this was where my mind went to. no one home, I almost did but man I didn't want to see how high my bs would go. so I was good.

    Where is your port?

a lot of ppl have smaller incisions and 1 long incision. a lot of ports are in the middle of that long incisions.

    Unfill

i'm going to guess not. most sharp pains in the chest could be a esophageal spasm. of course you can't rule out a heart attack either. when my band slipped a bit I had horrible pain in my esophagus and the barium swallow showed it to be 20 spasms. after a couple of months of being unfilled and following the doctors orders to the T. my band slipped back into place and I no longer have spasms. i am in the process of slowly getting fills. i wish you luck
