  1. I was a great yoyo dieter. I have lost with the best of them. a few years ago my weight started to go up and up. I went on nutra system. I didn't lose wt. nor did my blood sugar go down. I had to go on insulin. but my bs remain in the high 250's. so after 6 mos. I went on the south beach diet . same result as nutra system except my blood sugar did come down a bit. I was up to 200 plus long acting insulin and up to 60 short acting. I was becoming insulin resistant. I than tried weight watchers. I followed the plan to the tee. my wt was just going up and up. I was almost to the 300 lb. mark. 296 to be exact. I was dumbfounded as to why I couldn't lose wt. my primary care doctor knew what I was going through and he recommended wls. I have a slew of medical problems each with their own specialtists and everyone of those doctors were all on board for the surgery. I know now why I wasn't losing wt. my portions were way to big for me. I was eating healthy by anyones standard but the band taught me that I was eating to much. almost immediately my bs went down. even before any fills. I was eating the amount of food we are supposed to be eating. I now take 30units of insulin at night. no short acting since surgery. I will be moving from insulin to oral on my next visit to pcp. he said the oral controls my liver a bit more. it produces blood sugars on its own. my blood sugars are 94-124 every day. and I lose, slowly but at least it's a loss. my inches are what is going down n down. this last week I lost 7 inches from all over my body. that's 17 inches since 1/13. so the answer to your question for me anyways is healthy eating isn't the only thing you need to do to lose wt. amount is. illness prevented me from dieting on my own and losing. I never would have learned this without the band. never in my life did I think I could live on a 1/2 cup of food 3 times a day. so that is why I had wls. and why regular dieting didn't help me. I don't think I could have eaten such small portions without the band

    Worries

the lap band is adjustable. for a bit after surgery perhaps up to a year you will be going into your doctor's for fills to your band. eventually the goal is that our little pouch which holds about 4 ounces of food will send that signal to your brain that you are full. and than for the next 4-5 hours after eating that you are satisfied by that meal. the band sounds like the tool your eating disorder is asking for. I know that I for one would have eaten around the other wls's. but the band keeps me honest. but please research all your options. go to the seminars. good luck on your new journey.

    "3 week stall"

your body is adjusting to the weight loss you have already lost. you are now eating a little more substantially as well. so say to yourself, I will stay on course. I will eat only 1/2 to a cup of food 3 times a day. I will eat Protein first. I will drink plenty of fluids. I will be hungry. until I get my band adjusted properly I will be hungry. when I am hungry I will drink fluids, walk, exercise and bitch at us on this site so we can help you get through bandster hell. if you continue to eat healthy and add some exercise the wt. will continue to come off. measure yourself. inches maybe disappearing as we speak. so good luck. and it sounds like you are running a normal time for the different phases we go through. good luck.
  4. is there ppl who are ex band ppl and are getting a sleeve just sit by and wait for someone they can preach sleeve to. I know I shouldn't be saying this but I just wish naysayers would stay on their own site. okay i'm done.
  5. you have heard it all before I am sure. there is failures in all wls. I just watched entertainment tonight where they were talking about carly Phillips who had bypass and the band and is failing at both. the band is adjustable. you can fill and unfill to fit you. some ppl can eat around anything so will have a hard time. you will find on this site a whole lot of ppl who have 7plus years with the band. and are very successful. wls any of them require time, thought, and diet. exercise and a generally healthy lifestyle. losing 5-8 lbs a month is the norm. but the inches. I swear the inches come off where the wt. doesn't represent it. I lost 10 inches last month. so good luck with surgery. have the surgery when you are ready. and we will be here with support. best wishes

    Worst Valentines Gift Ever!

You might want to consider taking your husband for a visit with your nutritionist and one with your doctor. your husband loves you but has no clue what you are preparing for. he needs to hear it from someone other than you. it really helped when I let my husband come for the initial doctor appointment and for a seminar. It is your job as well as everything else you have to do, is to educate your husband. good luck. I would have been so mad at mine if he brought home mcdonalds French fries. I can smell them now

    Too tight?

as long as you are able to drink fluids and stay hydrated give your band a chance. first make sure you are taking small enough bites, and chew well and wait to see if it goes through, you will know fairly quickly. continue eating this way. usually about half way through your meal and you are eating properly you will notice that the food is going through just fine and you don't have sliming. sometimes it take more than a few weeks for everything to settle down. good luck.

    How many fills?

it depends how much of a fill you get. how big is your band? I have a 14 cc band with 8.5 cc in it. had surgery on 5/29 I have had 8 fills so far. i am going to rest with the fills for at least 2 months.i want to work on head hunger and healthy eating. i feel as if i am spinning my wheels just trying to keep hydrated, good luck

    I can't believe I am down 44 pounds

good job on the wt. loss. I think you can thank Cheryl for the pumpkin recipe. it takes a whole lot of time before our band becomes a part of us I think. i'm not there yet and I am 8 mos. out. after all the fills are done I think things will be totally different in my train of thought. right now having to deal with those fills, liquid diets etc. is making it a bit hard to love it.

    Where is your port?

mine is in the same place as country, right side under rib cage. there are reasons a surgeon will pick the place he wants the port. and if you think it will show more after you lose wt. there is a port and tubing especially for those that have lost all their wt. and don't want it to show. I wouldn't care where they put it as long as it wasn't on my waist line. that I promise would hurt wearing pants. good luck on your surgery.

    Pre Op Hospital List

I wanted a room fan. I sleep with one at home, ever since I worked the graveyard shift. it helped with noise in the day so I am used to it. the hospital had one but it cost me plenty. I wish I had brought my own crystal light. I was in hospital 2 days also. they had one flavor of crystal lite. and a pillow for the ride home would have been lovely. I live 2 hours away from hospital and I came home during rush hour traffic. so my next suggestion is try and time your discharge so you don't have to sit in traffic. make sure you have water for the ride home too. you will be thirsty. good luck swift recovery

    Pureed Recipe Forum

refried Beans on baked tortilla chips with some low fat cheddar cheese. I also like chicken Soup blenderized all together. I like to make a cheese roux and add chicken stock and some over cooked vegetables like broccoli or asparagus. my go to when I am on mushies is eggs sunnyside up with some pico de gallo or sririchi. chili. atthis point I bought chili without beans. man that first bite was heaven. I licked the little bowl. it is important since you have no restriction to really concentrate on the portion sizes. it would be so easy to eat a whole can of chili. but if you don't learn portion size it is very difficult when you are getting your fills. so learn all you can about eating properly. or you will be in mental pain all the time. good luck as you advance your phases.
  14. I hate change but I would love a nice clean house that I can decorate. I pray for you and your move. I hope it isn't to stressful. and remember to drink your water, have protein bars nearby and some protein powder. take some deep breaths , touch your toes and count to 10 . you never know you may just love your new place.

    Family becoming food police

quit defending yourself. and it would be a okay to tell your husband to please stop talking about me to other ppl. I had to tell my daughter to stop introducing me and than adding onto my name," and she has a lapband." I have told those I wanted to tell and I will keep ppl up to date .it isn't their job. the statement what happens in vegas stays in vegas is the same in my household. whatever happens inside my home stays there. I won't tell your life story don't tell mine.

How do you deal with lack of support?

this person needs to be on the outside of your "of knows:". unless she is doing a lot of research and can back up her negative chatting than she is talking through her a..!! I promise i'm not going to say it. Sometimes we are so excited we expect every one to be there with us but they are not. they are afraid of the unknown and this is something they are not sharing with you. either talk with her and offer her your friendship so she can return hers or move away from her. good luck this is a sore topic with a lot of wls patients.

    22/04/14 Lapband Day

you need to know that the liquid phases isn't just pre and post op. every time you get a fill you will be back on 2 days of liquids and 2days of mushies. that could mean every month four days out of the month you will be in hell. we politely refer to it as bandster hell. I am doing the liquids now after a fill and I am in mental pain over the whole dang thing. poor husband. I fixed him dinner but because I was so hungry. I purchased a 2 inch porterhouse steak and made French fries from scratched and a mushroom sauce to die for, but I didn't even taste anything. I am not tolerating anything but liquids so I feed him. lucky for him he doesn't gain weight and is healthy. but on the plus side we do this so we can get to the green zone and our appetite and hunger just might be in check. horray! be strong. you will be moving through each stage and really appreciate simple foods like eggs, refried beans, chili. yogurt, cottage cheese etc.. these foods will be your steak and potato.

    Whey Protein?

If I am reading this correctly you had your sugery on 10/15/13. unless your doctor gave you the thumbs up you shouldn't be drinking any calories. now some banders can't eat in the morning due to morning time tightness. but until your band is adjusted correctly you should be able to eat solids 3 times a day. most doctors don't want liquid calories. I choose to use Protein shakes when I haven't gotten in my protein count of 60 a day at the minimum. and go with what Cheryl said. whey protein is actually the best for us.

nsv's and GB surgery and scale victory

Thanks I am going to my pcp Monday and going to mention this to him. if he won't refer me I don't need him anyways.
  23. man oh man after my GB surgery I had lower back pain like I've ever had so I went and got one of those wrap around heating thingamingy things and it went around me easily not just my waist but even my hips. iwas able to wear it all day comfortable like, it didn't curl up or anything. went to the doctor today for post op check. my surgeon apologize that none of my doctor's for the last 2 years didn't do anything about my GB. he said it was a big huge sick gallbladder. the swelling I had in my abdomen and my back pain at the waist are gone. he said there was so much free fluid in and around the gb. apparently I don't look sick anymore. lol. so this is sorta of a lesson to everyone out there. I had been complaining about pain for years. I even had a ultrasound a few years ago but because no stones were found my doctor shrugged it off and said I don't know. if you have pain something is wrong, especially if you can't diagnose why the pain is there. incisional pain you know what is causing the pain. so don't take I just don't know as a answer for something you know is wrong. I think I am going to another cardiologist now. I had all the tests because I kept going into atrial fib and than v tach and because my cardiac cath showed clean arteries I was told by the cardiologist "I don't know why your heart does what it does, it just does". and I excepted that. deal with the problem when it happens again. well I think not. and I lost 8lb this month and 10inches total. yeah!!!! new computer , dang I wish I knew how nice computers were. my old one was from 2006. lol. this thing is correcting my spelling . wow. and no I don't even have a iphone. I still have my fliptop phone.

    snide remarks

this is one of the reason's I hate the biggest loser. ppl that are not overweight think everyone can diet and exercise and lose the lbs. geez I did it for years. I wasn't even overweight until I had my child at the age of 21. gained 70 lbs with her. but I was able to yo yo diet with the best of them. but for some reason the last 3 years I couldn't diet if my life depended on it and it did. and yet I still couldn't lose wt. No one chooses wls lightly. it isn't the easy way out. ppl just don't understand that we have done all we can short of lifting that semi-tractor tire to lose the wt. we didn't want surgery we needed surgery. and lapband is not the easy road. but at least it is a road in which one can lose wt. safely. good luck and don't let ppl get you down. its' not their life. and I would be hard pressed to share anymore with your work crew.

    Missing

I haven't had a problem like yours. my doctor withdraws all Fluid before he puts more in. it has always matched my files. if your band or tubing is leaking it does require surgery to repair. I don't know how invasive they have to be. I hope someone here has gone through this for you. and can answer your question
