Can I remain a Vegan after lap band?

i used to be a big meat eater but now fish and chicken does it for me and even those are losing their draw. i love vegan products and since my granddaughter is severely allergic to eggs i am more aware of vegan eating and i enjoy it. i still need to get a book and cook book for vegan eating. i need to be more educated on the subject. i do enjoy when Cheryl gives us some recipes. i don't know how my doctor would feel about this. they are so tuned into animal Protein.
  2. my reason for wls became a reality. today my doctor took me off of insulin. still have to do the blood testing for awhile, but no more insulin. yippee!!

there are so many types of protein drinks out there. I bet there is one you will like. I really like mixing nectar chocolate with my coffee in the morning.

Grazing for months and can't stop :(

get anything that makes you graze out of the house. you need to see your doctor perhaps a fill? also you need to get the 3 meals back into play. if you eat 4 oz of protein you will not feel so much like grazing. but it does sound like you need a fill. and a talk with your nutritionist and start drinking your water. it will help fill you up.

    Up and down

you should be almost over the gas pains. it all depended on how much gas your doctor had to use to blow up your stomach so he could see. continue to use heat pad on the gas pain. it will help. glad you are feeling better. everyday you will see improvement.

Do you ever feel disappointed that you can't eat much?

I only get that feeling when I see a commercial and someone is advertising a great big juicy burger. I know if I went and order one I would be done in with one bite of bread, burger and bacon and whatever else is on it. so it would be a waste and probably very depressing. so just stay away from it. but they surelook good.
  8. I was all prepared for gastric bypass but came out of surgery with a lapband.i was filled with adhesions and scar tissue and didn't have enough small intestine to be able to stretch up. but preparing for surgery I made sure I was well informed about what was expected of me and what to expect. I got all my protein powders and supplements. I had all the food I needed for after surgery and the stuff I needed to crush pills and measure food. if it wasn't for this site I don't know what I would have done. I was so lost about the band. I treated it like I had the gastric bypass. it was good though because my doctor uses the same supplements and stuff for all his surgeries. use this site throughout your journey. it will help you get through all the different phases we go through. good luck happy for you.

    Not feeling good

I hate liquid pain medication. I don't care what kind it is it always makes me nauseous. you should be able to switch to tablet form and chew it or crush it. call your doctor for change of pain medication. there is medication for nausea as well. so my advice call the doctor and let him know what you are going through. if you want to try a few things these are some of the things recommended. take pain medication or switch to Tylenol or ibuprophen heating pad to gas pain areas ice packs to incisional pain make sure you don't get constipated. ask your doctor what he wants you to have. a lot of us use miralax rest and drink warm liquids. teas are great get all your liquids in no matter what. broth, Water, crystal lite, tea, Jello, and than walk some. not a lot. you are not ready for a exercise program. just around the room or your yard. get up every hour and move some. good luck and I wish you a speedy recovery.

    First fill was intense

my doctor has me lay on the table and left my head off the table. it forces abdominal muscles to tightened up and makes my port stick out. plus I know exactly where the needle should go in at. right in the middle of my largest incision. but saying how easy the fill is I can also say that for a day I don't feel very good, sorta like a unwell feeling without being sick. and sometimes my back hurts from laying on the table flat. but I have never had bruising or pain when getting filled and always one poke and its over. my doctor offers lidocaine but heck I don't want to be poked twice.

    Good snack or bad?

peanut butter is a good source of protein. treat it as a fat. make sure you measure it for serving size.

    Stuck Food

the papaya extract is chewable. it aids in digestion. my parents used it and took one every morning. if you have no liquid in your band and still are not able to drink or eat there is a problem. eating smaller, chewing thoroughly and eating small bites help if everything is working right. you need to call the doctor again and let him know you are still having problems. going on a liquid diet isn't a bad idea. if your stoma is swollen for some reason it can cause your problems. so giving it a rest would be helpful. but you should be able to drink liquids. don't get dehydrated.

    Imperforate Hymen surgery

I remember when I was about your daughters age I had a cyst on my cervix. the gyn that my mom sent me to clamped my cervix to pull it apart and drain the cyst. she told me this won't hurt a bit. well it was the worse experience in my life, very traumatizing. to this day I will not go to a female gyn. your daughters pain maybe more trauma than the pain. just go a long with her and let her know it is okay. also tell her that her problem isn't very uncommon. many girls are born with this and is something that needed to be taken care of, one of the many female things she will face in her lifetime. poor thing. hope for a speedy recovery.

    New and Questions...

after you are insured go to a seminar. look for one on the internet. I went to 2 different ones checking out the doctors and staff involved at the clinics. usually at these seminars they ask you for your insurance information. and than in the next few days they call you to say they verified your insurance. now you can make your choice as to what doctor you want to go with. keep in mind, location, after care, reputation and how many of the surgeries they have done. good luck. and be sure you research carefully all wls. each one is special to a certain person especially the reasons of wls. don't take preparing yourself with education on your own. really scan the internet and web sites like this one to be as prepared as you can be. good luck on your journey

    Protien drink for breakfast

i'm also thinking you need a little unfill. you should be able to eat a meal and it should be through the stoma or band in 20 min's or so. if your stoma is swollen a unfill would help with that swelling. as far as a protein drink in the morning as ordered by your doctor add protein to a smoothe . either a vegetable smoothie or fruit. it would be more filling. my doctor is okay with a smoothie in the morning as long as its a vegetable one with protein. I add stevia to help wth a bit of sweetness. or a banana. my band is tighter in the morning. even cold water doesn't sit well with me. so hot tea or coffee. good luck I hope you can sort this out. perhaps a talk with the nutritionist could be of help

    Will it work?

I used to be able to yo yo diet successfully. but about 3 years ago I couldn't lose wt. no matter what diet or exercise I tried. I did nutria-system, ww,south beach diet, calorie counting, no carbs. etc. I wasn't losing wt. instead my wt. went up and up. I was close to 300 lbs and had a heart attack when I said enough is enough. I have a band. it's a lot of work but without it I would be well over 300 lbs by now. and as said above it's amazing how little food you need to survive on. no wonder none of the diets I mentioned above worked. before you have surgery you really need to ask yourself do I really want this and am I willing to put the work needed to be successful. this advice is for whatever surgery you decide is best for you. its a lifestyle change for life.
  19. I don't know about swimming but I take a Jacuzzi every night and I had to stay out of it for 2 months. it was hell. it was the only thing I complained about when I saw the doctor.

    Possible leak

call your doctor and have him check the amount in your band. it should match your medical records.

    HELP Fill problems

nope. my doctor always removes what fill is in there to get a true measurement and than adds to it. this way she knows she is in the port and how much is in my band. call your doctor for a appt.
  24. you are okay. you are not swollen anymore. your band is wide open. I ate 8oz steaks during this time without incidence. but you are entering bandster hell. until you get your band adjusted with fills you will be fighting hunger. this is the time period in which you need a lot of self control. you are educating yourself with small amount of food, chewing well and slowly so when you are adjusted you are doing all the right things. 1 cup of food at meal time. most of it being protein first, vegetables second and carbs third. 60 - 80grams of protein a day. if you don't watch what you are eating and the amount you will gain wt. a talk with a nut and your doctor will help explain this phase of the band you are starting. good luck and just remember just because you can eat whatever and a lot doesn't mean you should. eat healthy and move around.
