Medications and whatnot
terrydumont46 replied to christinabryan89's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
you can crush, break, or even chew. you will be surprised how many pills have no taste. the only Rx you can't do this to is time released medication. Vicodin has hardly no taste to it so just chew it up and follow with sips of Water. the pills will dissolve fairly quickly , even in your pouch. if you have pills that are really big discuss this with you PCP or the doctor who ordered it and ask if there is any other pills that you can take that are smaller but do the same job. I was surprised how many big pills I was able to change over. your pharmacist can help you too! everyone is a team member. -
Food prep? Food scale?
terrydumont46 replied to TimeforTanya's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
there are scales that will count Proteins, fats, total carbs, and calories etc. it's called eat smart, I got it through amazon. while I was going through thelearning phase of eating solids and getting fills my doctor insisted I keep a food log with this info on it. and than we would discuss my food choices at appointments. it really helped to learn healthy choices. -
Dr's office told me they were submitting two weeks ago
terrydumont46 replied to Mellyb251's topic in Rants & Raves
your medical records are yours. you can go to another doctor. when you find a doctor you want to go to have them send a request for your records. be sure they request all your records that the insurance company needs. I become very angry with companies that say tomorrow, or 5 business days. this is the age of technology. why couldn't that coordinator fax your package to the insurance company? no answer needed here. lol good luck on your Quest. -
You're stuck all day and can't bring in your own food
terrydumont46 replied to greensleeve's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I always carried a bottle with vanilla Protein powder and a crystal lite and than all I had to do was add Water. I also always carry Protein Bars. I have them in my car as well as purse. don't think you can't have anything at some of these places. if you look around I bet you would find something healthy and easy for you to eat. thank goodness for us that most places now offer healthy choices. don't go hungry. low blood sugar isn't fun.. hve fun this summer on your outings -
Is it best to go back to liquids after a mess up?
terrydumont46 replied to hypband's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
you likely won't feel the fullness yet. at this stage in your progress you need to measure your food. and be hungry most of the time. head games are at their strongest at this stage. eat healthy and get into the habit to eat Protein first. vegetables second. watch your calorie intake. -
Weird Toddler Mommy Question about recovering
terrydumont46 replied to Lite'N'Sweet's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
it's just temporary. I sleep on my stomach now. -
I take about 20 pills alone in the morning. I remember sitting with a medicine cup full of pills taking 1 at a time. took me over an hour to take my med's. I finally started to just take a few at a time with water. the only one I didn't try was the capsule of Prilosec. but breaking the capsule apart and swallowing with water worked. now that I am a year down the road I can take all my pills with one swallow. if you are taking liquids okay put the crushed pills in pudding or applesauce or jello. but this is a question you put up to your doctor. even your prescribing doctor can get involved by ordering liquid or chewable forms of your medications or ordering a smaller different pill. I did that too. there is a way to do this.

number one thing to always remember. don't listen to ppl. if you follow your doctor's guidelines which will be different than my doctor you will be fine. if you have a question its nice to hear our opinion and sometimes you can take our advice to your doctor and see what he says. once I found this site I learned so darn much from our veterans. but it made me more educated and I was able to talk to my doctor and understand more. the PA has even learned things from me. ha. but your doctor or your doctor office is your mentor. use them.

you are right you shouldn't be having this pain anymore. sometimes activity might make the port site sore but not enough to have to wear a abd. brace. I had gallbladder surgery in feb. and all my scars are even gone. they may need to reposition the port or perhaps a stitch broke . since you are seeing your doctor for a fill you be sure he gives you a clear concise reason this is happening to you. be assertive, your goal is to be pain free and to get along with your life but you can't as long as you are reminded constantly with pain. wish you well
-
I believe in pain pills. if the one you are on isn't helping ask your doctor for something stronger. a lot of ppl on here like liquid ibuprophen. now here are the things I tell everyone. 1. take pain medication 2.use heat to the left shoulder. ice packs to the incisions 3. move around, at least a walk around your house. 4. fart and be proud 5. rest in a nice comfortable recliner. watch old movies, 6. eat sf popsicles, drink a lot of stock or broth. if you don't like the canned stuff make your own. throw in chicken any kind of vegetables and strain the hard stuff out and save that stuff for when you are moving onto mushies. freeze it for now. blend later for a creamy soup. also hot tea with some honey. 7. your intestines were put to sleep when you were so while they are waking up they start to produce gas, use beano or gasx strips for that kind of gas pain. 8. again, rest but every hour or few walk around. I wish you lots of luck and quick healing.

I agree with 2much. whenever something different happens it's best to go on a liquid diet until you are sure you are not swollen. I would in your case call your doctor and let them know what happened. they may want to see you are wait 72 hours to see if everything settles down. if the pain increases or you began to vomit again you need to get yourself to the er. and go to the er your doctor practices out of. a lot of er's don't know what to do with a banded person. good luck

what i'm eating
terrydumont46 replied to Finally banded's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I also don't weigh anything. I sorta know what I can't eat. don't tell anyone but sometimes I fill my plate with the amount of food I used to eat and laugh at how much I actually can eat. but don't do this kind of thing until you are in the green zone. I get sorta a satisfaction that my band is doing its job and I still follow the rules of protein first, etc. I have found with the green zone I am having trouble getting the protein in that i need. at parties and such most ppl have no idea that I am on a diet. I take what I want from all catagories and praise the Lord my band does the rest of the work. I am not a fast loser but a lb a week is a okay with me. I think what I aam trying to say is get to the green zone, stay away from sliders and you will lose wt. and don't be surprised if the shredded brisket will be off your list when you are in the green. eating anything not completely moist is really hard to do. boy I am being winded. sorry. -
what good news. I bet you had a nice smile on your face.
-
I never had any troubles with my port. I don't know what kind of things your PA had you do but if you lift your legs off the table and your head it makes your port stick up and out. if its flipped and a xray will confirm this I do believe its a outpatient type of surgery. you are a year from surgery. I think you should have more fill in your band. although 30 lbs isn't anything to cry about. Good job on that. hopefully tomorrow they will be able to do a fill and get you were you should be. good luck
-
if you don't eat solids your band won't be able to keep you satisfied. you will always be hungry. you really need to see a nutritionist. the stuff you mentioned will be high in calories. Protein drinks are at the very least 100 calories a piece. olive oil is 130 calories. I don't know about fat bombs etc. please consider 2 much advice. it is sound and you will lose wt. sensibly and keep the wt. off. what you preparing to do is setting you up to fail. you cannot do what you wrote for any length of time. to succeed you need a doctor and a nutritionist. I wish you lots of luck.

Insulin resistance and meal plans
terrydumont46 replied to christinabryan89's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I was insulin resistant before surgery. I was taking 200 units of lantus daily and over 30 units of Humalog and my blood sugar was still 250 plus and at times was 500 for just eating a potato. when I got my lapband I really had to take my blood around 4 times a day. I was eating no carbs except what was in vegetables. my blood sugar dropped to 100 and I started to have real low blood sugars. Gosh I hated it when it happened. within 2 months I was taking only 30 units of insulin at night and no Humalog. I stopped all insulin 4 months ago I think. I am still on Glucophage but only 1 in morning and 1 at night. my liver is still releasing sugars into my blood. but there is talk of discontinuing that too. I believe the discolorations you are talking about will fade in time if not go away completely. I wish you luck. lapband surgery saved my life it will yours too. -
Pure Motivation: What keeps YOU going?
terrydumont46 replied to sofi_sunshine's topic in Fitness & Exercise
it's all the nsv's that keep me motivated. the other day my jeans I have been wearing all winter were so big. I could pull them on without unbuttoning them. I started going through my husbands jeans. he is about 4 sizes smaller. but I knew he had to wear a back brace a few years ago so I grabbed a pair of jeans and pulled them on a omg they fit with a little room. all I had to do was roll them up a bit. this makes me happy and I feel thin. the scale make not rock and roll but nsv's do. -
when I am having a hard day my dinner will start with protein but I have a medium bake potato with it instead of a vegetable. with my lapband a potato is a nice little slider but it is hot and puts something solid in my stomach so I am not hungry all night long. I use and don't everyone cringe but I use a pad of butter. it is usually the only fat I have had all day. but on the whole I eat protein first, vegetables second and if still hungry a carb. but my pouch only holds about a 1/2 cup of food so the carb doesn't usually play a part of my diet.

if I had more control over what I ate and exercise all would work out. shoot, I did eat right. and I exercise as much as my joints would allow me. my family watched me diet and do all the right things and at that point in my life as my diabetes climbed out of control and my weight was creeping up and nothing would stop it. when my heart stopped when I went into v-tach and my hubby watched me die he and my family was all for me to have wls. a nurse that was doing those free screenings heard me say that I had lost 75 lbs and my daughter proudly said that lapband helped me do it she said that she wanted surgery but her husband was against it. she was morbibly over weight. I told her that it is her happiness and health in play not his. it's nice with he support but this is a individual decision not somebody else's. I now regret I didn't talk with her more. lost chance. oh my cholestral was normal. yeah!

CHEST PAIN AND GAS PAINS
terrydumont46 replied to Susan58's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
this is where we say "call your doctor". it could still be gas pain. but I think this is seriously a doctor call. I don't have chest pain caused by food anymore. if something is stuck or I ate to much the pain is more sternum, jaw and my gums funny enough. but not chest pain. we do have the vagus nerve running from stomach to shoulder, perhaps. my doctor told me to check my pulse if I ever have a question about that. if the vagus nerve is stimulated it causes the heart rate to decrease. so call your doctor a ekg might be the right test just to make sure everything is okay. -
Low carb diet compliance
terrydumont46 replied to I will what I want's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
if I remember right mine was 15-30gr for each meal, which was 3 meals a day. snacks if I had any was 12gr or less. I had to lose 5% of my body wt. prior to surgery. so I started when I finished all my other requirements. I got there and was really bummed out when my doctor continued this low carb. diet even to this day. lol. -
while I was getting adjusted to the green zone my doctor insisted I eaat 3 meals of solid food a day. now that I have reached the green zone eating isn't of concern. I told her that I have a green protein smoothie in the morning and she was all okay with it. lunch I frequently am not hungry for so cottage cheese, yogurt, protein bar etc. but I always sit down and have a good dinner. the only concern I have is getting the protein in that I need. sometimes though I am always hungry so I am playing mind games to get through the day.

Does Vegetable Broth count as a clear liquid?
terrydumont46 replied to Butterflyhigh's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
make your own. add whatever vegetable you want to your liquid and cook away. strain the vegetables and drink to your hearts desire. I loved vegetable stock or broth cooked this way. -
you would think (rant about my new doctor)
terrydumont46 replied to moonlitestarbrite's topic in Rants & Raves
my pcp does all my blood work for vit. minerals, lytes etc. my wls and pcp leave me notes to take to the other one on concerns etc. I wouldn't want a pcp that wasn't tuned into my band. I do have to explain stuff but at least he is asking all the right questions. -
once the "cake" is brown cover it with foil and a bit lower temp to finish baking. but corn flouris a carb so cooking with it instead of flour isn't making anything more healthy. look online for low carb. cooking. it will teach you how to substitute ingred. gotta watch the sugar free items too. some cannot be baked. like nutria sweet but stevia can be. get a cookbook. good luck.
