New York City NYC metro area LGBT members supporting each other's VSG journey
Geminitraveler posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Looking to find others going through or having gone through VSG and who: 1) are gay 2) who live in my area 3) who want to support each other in this journey with socialization and friendship It is just going to be so weird not going out to dinner as a form of social fun or drink when I go out to a club. Between my weight and severe sleep apnea this surgery is a matter of life and death but the adjustment is going to be tough . I feel like I may be in a new world with new friends -
Apprehensive About the Surgery
Geminitraveler replied to Michele Brischetto's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I am 3 weeks post op and the I can say the waiting for the surgery was worse than the hospital stay. The first few days at home were uncomfortable. Food is a pleasure now. I feel full on so little. I feel so in control and enjoy watching cooking shows and preparing food. It really is a dream come true. I think you will entertain and enjoy food just as much if not more. I realized the greatest proponents of this surgery were the ones that have had it. This is all outside of the fact that according to studies my sleep apnea gave me a high chance of dying 10-14 years out. Now that's going away and I went from 3 hypertension medicines to one at 25% of my previous dosage. My doctor predicts I will be off that in 2 weeks. Be brave and it will pay off. -
Frustrations!
Geminitraveler replied to somaiswhat's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Definitely let your therapist & doctor know about the throwing up! Sometimes a little anti-depressant or change in anti-depressant is all you need. I think my doctor anticipated that I might experience a depressed period and said "always focus on the health aspect and not the pounds or how I look". One study my bariartic surgery group mentioned said those that qualify for bariatric surgery have an 8-13 years increase in life span if they have the surgery. What's better than that? I don't know if you had any co-morbidities but I know my sleep apnea was life threatening. Hang in there. One day at a time. My prayers for your quick recovery and turnaround. -
sore that and low fever 3 days prior!
Geminitraveler replied to tim0826's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Great to hear! I will pray for you and watch your posts to see how things go. One other thing I did pre surgery was take extra Vitamin C. From the link below I found this: " research has only supported this nutrient's effectiveness in decreasing the length of a cold." hang in there, let the doctor know right away and they may get it under control so you can keep the date. Good Luck! -
Not gettting in all my protein or liquids:(
Geminitraveler replied to poisonedsweet's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The only way I can get it in is to sip, sip and sip all day. Right now I am home recuperating after my 9/5 surgery so I give 100% attention to this. My nutrition team gave me a 1 oz cup and told me to drink one of these every 5 minutes. In the beginning I walked while I drank to let gravity help it along. Especially when drinking the thick shake. I do get tired & need some lay down time but don't want to stop drinking. I make a mountain of pillows so I am reclining in the bed and the Water still flows. The ice idea is also great. Hang in there. It gets better and easier. You should let your doctor know the shortfall. Dehydration is the #1 reason for readmission to the hospital after gastric surgery. -
Finally .... wait dropping but I can eat a little more
Geminitraveler replied to mrsb12's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Keep going! You are an inspiration losing 123 pounds in 8 months. I hope the nausea and indigestion get better. Did you ever try meat replacements made out of Seitan, Tofu, Tempeh, Quorn, Paneer, or TVP ? -
What do you do for headaches?
Geminitraveler replied to sashalk's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
They told me tylenol was o.k. and they actually sent me home from the hospital on 9/7 with a prescription for for hydrocodone with acetaminophen. I've had 2 headaches and it took care of both of them right away. Swallowing pills has been o.k. for me post-op. Excedrin not only has caffeine but it has aspirin so definitely watch out. They told me aspirin is a big no no before and even after surgery unless I consult with the doctor. Good luck and keep us posted -
Great news!!! The gas can take a few days but everyone is different. I came home Saturday and the gas did not fully leave until about yesterday, Tuesday. I did a lot of walking, some gas-x and a hot pad helped. Just remember every day it gets better and better.
-
I had my RNY surgery 9/5 and the gas seems to be the worst of it. I am walking a lot but will try the heating pad and maybe gas x later. Thanks for the advice postings.

Protein shots....
Geminitraveler replied to poisonedsweet's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Wow, thanks for this great info DLCoogin. I a just starting. My surgery was 9/5 so this came at the right time. What about Isopure Zero Carb Protein Water? It has Ion exchange whey protein which is supposed to be short on peptides but my diet includes whey protein isolate. I wish I didn't spend the money on them already. LOL Better to be informed and I have plenty of whey protein isolate thank goodness -
I just had my surgery 9/5 so I am not at your stage yet. However, I do know the recommendations on my bariatric group's plan calls for everything other than the Protein shake/jello/yogurt to be pureed from after 14 days and for 4 weeks hence. Maybe pureeing the food would work. You are eating the food as recommended but just a little more broken down. Most pureeing recipes call for a drop of broth to moisten the food once the tuna, chicken etc is put in the blender I definitely second the advice on sipping. They say being dehydrated is going to make everything harder if not dangerous and I bet digestion is one of those things that is harder. You are so lucky you have your wife doing it at the same time. Even though she is tolerating the un pureed food maybe she will enjoy it better. Good luck and love to hear how it goes

surgery went great on 9/5. I had almost the same experience as everyone else but a little more discomfort with extra gas in my abdominal cavity. The first day home, 9/7, the liquids were very hard to get in but today, 9/8, was easier. I am just taking 2 pain pills today for a little bit of ache type pain in my midsection. The walking has been fine. I feel my best when I walk but it does tire me out fast. Congratulations everyone!!!! I am just so glad it's over and I am on my way.

Surgery date set: september 16th!
Geminitraveler replied to emily.brokaw's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had mine on 9/5 and all is well. I am so happy!!! I came home yesterday and am relaxing at home, walking, sipping liquids, taking vitamins/supplements and watching TV. Was not bad at all and surprising really no pain to speak of. Just a little discomfort. Good luck to everyone! -
1 more day of liquid diet tomorrow and 1 day of clear liquids on Wednesday and the next day, Thursday 9/5, is my surgery. Almost don't believe it. It's been a long process. Can't wait til it's over and the first few weeks go by. I have a cruise NOV 1 to look forward to at least.
-
I'm going in September 5th. At first it all seemed to take forever, pre surgery clearances, nutritionist meetings and now it's speeding up fast. What a journey this is. Half the people think I am crazy and the other half think I am brave.
-
I was diagnosed with severe apnea last September. I have been using a BiPap with a pressure of 20/16. Now it's one year later and and I have a surgery date of 9/5 for my gastric bypass. The test is a pain but worth it. Sleep apnea (severe) is life threatening. we'll overcome it and the weight. I give you credit for facing up to what you have to do at such a young age. I hope to hear good things from you in future posts:)

Surgery date set: september 16th!
Geminitraveler replied to emily.brokaw's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just got my date last week and it's going to be 9/5. It's been a long journey since June. Lots of doctor visits of various specialties for clearances and I've been on a diet for the last 2 weeks. I am stocked up on the vitamins, supplements, ISO protein water and protein powder for the first 2 weeks of my fluids only diet. I am as nervous as can be but excited to. Best of luck to you and let's keep in touch since we'll be going through the stages almost simultaneously -
I am on the pre-surgery diet and was told 8/26, 8/27/ 8,29, 9/3 or 9/5 were going to be dates I hate this waiting so am happy it's going to happen soon. The pre-surgery diet (morning shake, 28-40grams Protein for lunch & dinner with no Water 30 min before or after the meal, only 2 slices high Fiber bread the whole day, 3 1/2 cup fruit, 2 small protein Snacks, supplement regime, etc. etc) is going to great and actually causing me to drop already. My hospital just made the top 10% of all U.S. Bariatric Centers! The report is here if you want to check it out: http://www.healthgrades.com/quality It would be great if we all keep track of each other and if we get advice on other forums from experienced sleevers and post it here so we don't all miss anything.

8 month Post Op Photo Shoot
Geminitraveler replied to bigcountryab's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
any recommendations on the work outs? any emphasis on body parts or do you do just every thing? I was thinking of joining a gym a month post-op after some weight loss and I am motivated again. Haven't had the surgery yet and am waiting for a date but am planning every detail -
Hi neighbor, I am in Westchester county also. How are things now? Where did you have the surgery done? Hope all is well with you.

I am waiting for a surgery date and have looked up every side effect and complication so I am prepared. I did come up with a lot of information about hair loss and most said it was temporary due to an accelerated life cycle of your hair. here is where I received most of the information: http://voices.yahoo.com/weight-loss-surgery-hair-loss-3841552.html?cat=5 http://www.drdkim.net/ask-the-dietitian/understanding-hair-loss-after-bariatric-surgery/ http://www.obesityaction.org/educational-resources/resource-articles-2/weight-loss-surgery/weight-loss-surgery-nutrition-and-hair-loss http://www.livingafterwls.com/Library/Hair%20Loss.html
