You run the risk of breaking the seal and removing the glue that's holding the incision closed in the process. My surgeon and many others are against removing them yourself before your supposed too. Their put there to prevent infection and keep them sterile.

Mn Patients- Abbott Or St Joes?
gomekast replied to abbyabby's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
I'm in the Metro and I had my babies at Abbott. Great hospital, but I am no Allina fan anymore for various reasons. I had my VSG surgery threw Park Nicollet in St Louis Park. Loves the program there and so happy I went there. All the nurses have had the surgery and I love that. Do what your ultimately comfortable with. Good luck! -
Think before you eat... Something we all know about but do we really do it?
gomekast replied to ljmasterdebater's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
It is idiotic but several people on and off the forums here and at the other forums struggle with the mental aspects post op. I don't think it really matters if this is myth or not. He had a good intention behind this and means to help others by possibly making them thunk twice. For myself, I think twice have for many years. But it does take practice for food addicts like myself. Some don't care about post op plans and will eat what they want when they want. They show up here every so often. This reminder is a helpful one for at least myself. -
Stalled after the first week?
gomekast replied to LynRN's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 7 weeks post op. I stalled for about 2.5-3 weeks right in the middle. I just kept going with my plan and wasn't worried because I knew it would come off and frankly, I wasn't gaining so I didn't mind the break. I felt it gave my body a chance to catch up with things I guess. Just stay the course and you'll be fine. I'm now up to 50 pounds lost so far. -
Anybody Else Cheating?
gomekast replied to MississippiQueen's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi! These type of posts usually end up being therapy for many people that post in it and many more that just lurk and move on without posting. Or fights as Laura-Ven pointed out too. I'm 7 weeks post op and fully appreciate the context of this...I always walk away with a new piece of knowledge or realization that's more important than I ever imagined it would be. -
Are You Happy That You Had The Sleeve Procedure?
gomekast replied to love to be at goal's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My program didn't have us start our Vitamins until we were 4 weeks post op. They said it was usually the culprit of nausea and vomiting in their years of experience. Try milk or sugar free Jello and sugar free Popsicles. Start small. I had a sleeve that was swollen shut for the first week. No fun at all. Try different sugar free drinks...vitamin zero, propel zero, gatorade 2 series..etc. my body could only tolerate people zero for 3 full weeks. Nothing else. It really is is a game at first to find something, anything that your new sleeve likes. unjury chicken Soup was also my saving grace with the propel zero. I lived off those 2 for 3 full weeks. I didn't walk much at first. ..I couldn't. But I would walk around the store with my family. That was the extent of my walking. Take it slow and try all sorts of beverages until your sleeve likes one. Once you find it you'll feel 1000% different. -
You need to shower daily with those! It's the only sure way of doing your part of keeping them clean and free of infection. Their annoying yes but showering will also ease a lot of the itch.

Thick purees are a totally different ballgame. Few small bites and you'll be done. I dumped off too much sugar free torani syrup. Instantly felt the sweaty hot flash, shakes, ran to toilet where I spent the next 45 minutes. My sleeve also doesn't like chicken at dinner time. Odd.

Are You Happy That You Had The Sleeve Procedure?
gomekast replied to love to be at goal's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am thrilled yes. As a nurse B points out, it's only a small part of the whole process tho. I've been in therapy for 8 years before the surgery even came into fruition. I've worked threw most of my issues for sure..had I not done all that before hand tho, and I very well might have a different answer for you. Probably not tho. It's not all easy and awesome weight loss each day. It's hard work day in and day out. I'm 7 weeks post op tomorrow. I love what I see and how I feel. But so many here don't deal with the mental aspects of this surgery tho. If your not prepared to deal with those things then the surgery will be very very difficult to cope with..but that's just my opinion too. Would I do it again? Yes I would. Would o do it without the therapy first? No stinking way. -
Are Gummy Vitamins Same As "regular" Vitamins ?
gomekast replied to LSCLatina's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I never did the gummy Vitamins. My program didn't have us start vitamins u til we started on puree at 4 weeks post op. Just had one more week to go and then I was able to take whole vitamins again. I'm 6 weeks and take my Alive! For women Vitamin. It's just my preference to take this brand because it's fruit and vegetable based. I tried severao of the gummies pre op and they just didn't cut it it for me. -
Importance Of Protien During Pre-Op
gomekast replied to shelly70's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Just wanted to share this...I had my surgery back in October on the 22nd. I had gone in for my ultrasound on my gallbladder..only to find that I had to have an MRI on my liver that same day. They found significant sparring of the liver..basically fatty deposits that had grown outside of the liver and had begun to sort of stalk out. I was freaked the heck out. I'm only 38 and thought...I hope I can change this. I did 16 full days of just shakes. I would add ice cubes to make them super ice cold. .kept the foam down on them. Dinner was unjury chicken soup. It saved me each day. Surgery say arrived and I told my surgeon...I completely trust what you're going to do to me but I want an update of my liver. He laughed at me..but I was serious. Found out that each and every stalk that had begun to grow out of the liver was non existent! ! I was more elated over this than anything else! The pre op served two purposes for ME personally. 1. Shrunk two the living he!! Out of my liver and it returned back to normal! 2. It really sent a strong message to my brain that this was a real lifetime change..so as a result I started out strong. I knew the beginning was when you lose the most and I needed to maximize my chances of losing as much as I could. To date, I've already lost 47 pounds. I'm 6 weeks post op now. This has been the hardest thing I've ever done. ..yet in many ways the easiest also. My kids need me. My hubby needs me. Good luck you guys! The pre op isn't easy at all...I ran away to my hot bath when I just couldn't cope with family eating. But now their all Sooo proud of me and I see it. -
My Doctor Wants Me To Eat More!
gomekast replied to EarthyGoalie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So I have a question on this subject...I'm 6 weeks post op. Is it normal to suddenly feel like I'm super hungry some days? I have been getting way more exercise lately about half of the week. But I only feel satisfied if I up my protein. I'm 5'8 and Dr office says I only need 65-70 grams..but half the time feel like I need upwards of 85 or more. Is this part of the process of healing and nornal? I should add....I was cleared for regular soft foods 2 weeks ago. Doing the suggested portions but some days I only hit like 450 calories and others I get to just about 675 and feel hungry or almost empty(which is my hunger now) Thanks! -
I Keep Accidentally Over-Eating!
gomekast replied to RainbowOreo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I found little cups from the dollar tree that are exactly 1/2 cup portions. I will use that for yogurts or cottage cheese...per my nut. For 2 oz portions of Protein I use a small weight scale. I've portioned meat out in baggies so I just grab it and move on. If I don't do these few things, I run into the same thing. Oh and I also have the Eat Slower app to slow me down too. It's available on both apple apple and android for free. -
Anybody Else Cheating?
gomekast replied to MississippiQueen's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 6 weeks out and I've followed the surgeons plan to a T. Like mentioned above by one of the vets, I went into the process willing to do everything they asked of me. After so many failed attempts to lose it before, I was willing to accept that their way was better and for good reason. I did a solid 8 weeks of liquids too...yes it was boring and on some days tough, but here I am 6 weeks post op send I've already lost 30% of my weight. I have exactly 100 more to go until my goal. Good luck. -
How Were You Doing 6 Weeks Post Op?
gomekast replied to Disabledaccount's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 6 weeks and not a whole lot of variety here. Lots of things just don't go down well and I'm not getting both water goals and protein goals on the same day yet. -
OCTOBER SLEEVERS- How Ya Doin'?
gomekast replied to TxCalico's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
So is anyone else finding themselves having to almost sort of pick between eating food and drinking Water? I just can't manage both yet. -
I'm 6 weeks and today I managed to get down 44 oz of just water! I felt like dancing! First time since my surgery and I feel like I have to choose...either food or Water. I can't do both. I'm told this too gets better. Looks like we both wait and see. Hang in there...the first month does fly by.

Head Hunger Is In Full Effect
gomekast replied to LynRN's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've hit a bit of head hunger the last few days and I'm 6 weeks out...but I think mine may be from not getting water in. I just cant seem to hit my water goals on just water yet. I'm not snacking or grazing at all. I'm sticking with my plan and not giving in to the food thoughts that creep in. I also have my therapy apt this week too...that will help me. -
OCTOBER SLEEVERS- How Ya Doin'?
gomekast replied to TxCalico's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Sleeved 10/22 and I've lost 43 pounds. I want to know, how are all of everyone's portions going? It really varies based on what I eat. But I panicked the other day realizing I used the wrong guideline and managed to take down 1/2 cup of shredded chicken in 3 hours. I have been working out a few times a week by just working. I work where I live...in an apt community that has close to 200 units. I clean them out, sometimes even have to pack up and move out residents myself, and I shovel snow too. Plus, my kids keep me busy too. But as far as dedicated exercise, I haven't done it yet. Insomnia has set it as well. -
I couldn't do it. I have big girls. .I'm talking like 44F. I just didn't care..nurses have seen it all. I did bring it with me, as I have a totally under wire free one but just wasn't up to having something so constricted around me. I should also say that most of my incisions were within reach of the girls. .and I was do covered with bandages etc that I needed to move the girls off to the side for the incision checks. Had I had a bra on, that would be totally not have happened. I would say no to an under wire of your anywhere near my size. Maybe an all cotton bra yeah.

Pre-Op Liquid Aggravation...
gomekast replied to linda305's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I too had a 2 week all liquid pre op diet allowing exactly the same items you listed. My surgery was back on October 22. My diet began October 6. Yesterday was my first real bite of food. I went a good 7 weeks on shakes, jello, propel zero, and half that with yogurts in there. My surgeon said the pre op diet is for two reasons...one is to shrink your liver. Another is as he said...the higher your bmi the higher chance you have of a complication. So he said that the pre op was very very important to the folks that have the bmi in the 60 and higher range. I know it stinks some days to have the shakes. Those days I flavored them with sf torani syrups. Or I'd just focus on water or the propel zero. It's for a good reason, so try to just wake up with the mantra ...it's going to be a great day drinking protein shakes today. I had to do that and it helped me out. A little positive reinforcement went a long way with me. -
I was surprised at just how little I could really get down at first. I had to ask a nurse to coach me to get the liquid percocet down. I wasn't prepared at all for that. Besides that, once pain was controlled for me, I was up cruising the ward walking. I felt pretty good, but I've had two babies and a hysterectomy. So for me the pain etc was piece of cake. I also ended not caring about showering or a bra. I wanted my own shower I guess. Good luck, your in for an amazing journey!
