Is anyone else having blood sugar issues since your sleeve?
gomekast replied to kitch101's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Oh wow..being a teacher with this has to be pretty challenging for sure. Any way youre able to keep a small softsided cooler there in your desk with some cheese and nuts? Then at about 10am and 2-3pm you just start to take small bites and just nibble all day long? You could have it all cut into tiny bites and just grab it as you go? -
Is anyone else having blood sugar issues since your sleeve?

To be honest, i do average more than the 25 your program says to do. My nuts havent given us specific carb targets like that. I did keep it low for the first few months..but then just eased into whatever i felt my body needs. I track on myfitnesspal and i aim for around 50% Protein, 25%fat, 25%carb based on a 1000 calorie diet. Doesnt always happen tho. I tend to avoid fruits, they just have too much sugar for me to handle. If youre on that app, add me..im gomekast on there abd you can see what i have each day. The one nut said if you are hypogl with the sleeve, you just have to eat different than all the other sleevers out there. Different rules apply. But i have not yet been given a target for carbs, and believe me..i've asked a few times! Just looked and my carbs fluctuate between 30 and 80. Its a wide range based on my level of activity for that day. If im not real active its closer to 35ish. Really active and exercising and its closer to 75. -
Almost 5 months out, still borderline dehydrated
gomekast replied to Seela's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Well, for me, it seems im constantly stuffing something into my mouth every minute of the day. Im fact, i have to set a timer after eating otherwise i forget to drink. I have hypoglycemia and between that and the Water thing..im literally always ingesting something. Its annoying but i'll take it over being extremely obese any day of the week. -
A Story About Head Hunger
gomekast replied to Skinny_Krissy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Perfect!! Im 5 months post and there are some days my head hunger are horrible snd other days its non existent. I've not been able to relate it to any feelings or emotions either. Its no joke. Head hunger doesnt just go away because youve had 80% of your stomach cut out. Many think it does, but its a harsh reality when it hits them. Its tough. I will forever be a food addict. I will forever have head hunger. But, its me being mindful like your neighbor says, and like my therapist has drilled into my head, thats gives me the confidence daily to be strong and know that its all just in my head. I still have an occasional treat..but its a clean smart small treat..like a baked Protein bar with some arctic zone frozen fake ice cream over it. I just make smarter choices. I also make sure i exercise off said treat. Im very mindful and always on gaurd. As i see it, I owe it to myself to be that way. -
Is my sleeve big ?!
gomekast replied to KimberlyBranco7's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Another thing to keep in mind is Soup and broth are sliders. They wont fill you up. One more good thing to think about it that your sleeve is numb until a good 4-8 weeks post op. Mine was numb well into month 2-3. -

I have a meter and i regularly run in the 60's..despite having the carbs like moon says to do. Mine just doesnt stay up much higher over any given period of time. But, i was also diagnosed with the hypoglycemia a good 15-20 years ago. I try to up my sodium as much as i can..and i always carry Snacks on me. I idealy need to eat every 2 hours to feel my best. One of the nuts on my grouo doesnt like this but too bad. Ive lost 89 pounds in 5 months so i would say im doing good. Nearly all of my snacks between the larger meals are light string cheese and some nuts. That picks me up fast and levels me off so my bs levels arent going below 60. If im traveling and cant have cheese i will toss in a couple Quest Protein bars. They have fat, fiber and lots of protein..those 3 are exactly what i need to stay up on my feet all day. Also, another thing i was told by a different nut was that with the hypoglycemia, sugars will dip the most mid morning and mid afternoon. So pay attention to eating and the times. If i dont eat every 2 hours i feel all around lousy. By 10am and 3pm i feel like i could eat the couch, even tho i may have just had something 1.5 hours ago. Its all about figuring out what your body needs and at exactly what times. I can test my bsl and the most common number i get is always 62. Mine just likes to hover there most of the time. -
I have young kids and i still had to cook for them while doing my pre op. Mine was 16 days of all liquids only. Honestly, the only way i could do it was this. I would cook the family meal while sipping my protein powder broth. Once it was served i would vanish to a hot bath. On pizza days i still vanish to the bath and im now 5 months post op.

How to choose? Sleeve vrs RNY
gomekast replied to tnpeach's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
To be fair to VSG, its been arouns for decades for stomach cancer and ulcers. They just did it for other reasons. I went in thinking rny. But i learned about the vsg and was sold on that. For me, i need to be able to take pills. Rny, you will not be able to even take cold pills or allergy pills for example. And the more i thought about it the more i decided i didnt need the rest of my tummy. For me it was personally about not allowing my brain a back up plan. I wasnt comfortable re-routing my insides at all. My last point was this..ive dealt with low vit d, sodium, and magnesium off and on all of my adult life. Vsg will not increase the chances because i will absorb nutrients from food and Vitamins. Vsg patients still get dumping too. I get it from too much fake sugar. Regardless of your choice, you need to remember that you wont be eating much. Ever. Can you live with the malabsorbtion issue for the rest of your life? Taking a prilosec type pill for a while is just a sort of gaurantee in my head. I thought i would be bothered by it but im really not. I see it as my, keeping my sleeve healthy pill. Im happy to give it that treat i guess. Ultimately it comes down to ourselves personally. Regardless of the choice we all still need to make the choice to have healthy on plan foods and Snacks. The choice of surgery wont prevent you from having that treat or chips etc. Youll still find a way to eat it if you really want it. Read read read! All over the internet too. Get many points of view and get to a place k Of peace with your choice. Good luck! -
So, once your post op the added sodium will be a good thing. You wont be able to take much in so the sodium and stuff in the zero drinks will keep you hudrated and somewhat nourished. I am 5 months post op and i still live on propel zero most days. Pre op i didnt drink any of them but post op i needed it. Most here do for the first 2 weeks just because your so swollen that much wont go down until that initial swelling eases up. Its also tough to figure out what your sleeve will tolerate as well. Regular Water isnt tolerated very well by my sleeve yet..mayne once a week. So as long as your drinking the sugar free/calorie free/bubble free stuff youll be fine post op. I chose propel zero because it has a bunch of added Vitamins without the sickening sweet stuff like the Vitamin zeros have.

Nausea Dizzy A.M. Why?

Also..some people have to take their prilosec at bedtime to combat the morning yucks. Just an idea. -
Nausea Dizzy A.M. Why?
gomekast replied to lapnicky's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had this for the first 4 months. I was also told i had a slight stricture too. I would just sip on a shake until it subsided. Then i would have a bite to eat. But i certainly wasnt in any hurry to get past the mushy stage. I still naturally gravitate to either Protein bars or greek yogurt. Gotta take it day by day. Yesterday i couldnt tolerate liquids..today i cant tolerate my usual decaf. It changes daily for me. I should also say this... My nurse was worried about my sleeve twisting on itself at my 3 month check up. But ive since doubled my dose of prilosec per her orders and i can eat just fine now. -

ONEDERLAND at LAST
gomekast replied to onedaycloser's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I hit onderland last week too. Heres my stats... Starting 286 Surgery 279 Current 197 Congrats. I'm now just overweight rather than extremely obese. -
Go slow if you do try it. My sleeve didnt like any coffee until post op month 4. Im now 5 months post op. I could occassionally get it down before this with a scoop of Protein powder but not always. Follow your drs orders on this tho. They may have specific coffee rules. Call and ask to verify.

Two Years out: LISTEN UP NOOBS AND SEEKERS! *warning-harsh*
gomekast replied to Dooter's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Thank you for this honest and candid peak into all of our futures. My husband is now at the point where he will question what I am thinking or looking to buy or have. For that I am grateful. Having said that, I have treated myself twice now in 5 months. Both times I doubled my workouts for the week following the treat. I felt true guilt after those two times. I was again grateful. See, before I had my surgery, I had had 8 years of therapy. So going into this life changing surgery for me was very different than what it is for a significant portion of wls community. I knew before hand that my evil side would always temp me, it would always nag me to choose the bad stuff. But what made this choice easy was that I knew it. It was imprinted into my being from my monthly therapy sessions. Part of me will always be a food addict, I've made peace with that. So, as a result, my family just knows that I have banned certain things from entering our home. Forever. Some people say that's not fair. But what's not fair is me cheating myself by sneaking a chip or two...when in all reality, my family doesn't need to eat chips in the first place. This May sum it up for my own journey up to this point..my 7 year old came home last week and said to me..mommy, why do none of the other parents of kids in my class care about what their kids eat like you do? They all have lunches packed with sugars and packaged stuff. None of them ever have a fruit or vegetable in its original form. It comes from one of the juice cups you don't buy us. I felt proud in that single moment. I also know that my journey is life long. Even when I reach my goal weight, I will have to forever be vigilant. My therapist reminds me each month and she does amazing work. -
I have to admit, I do eat most of the same things. Just because it's easier to be able to plan it out so I don't need Snacks. Breakfast is a Quest bar I'll sip on decaf with a tablespoon of powder milk in it lunch is something I have cooked..my latest is either a Protein pancake or some baked extra lean turkey with fat free refrained Beans and salsa. dinner varies. I've been sick the last few weeks so because of that I have zero appetite and I can't eat much so lately dinner has been another quest bar or I will use a high Fiber low carb small tortilla cut in half and fill it with some protein based item, or have a Greek yogurt with added Protein Powder. If I need snacks due to my hypoglycemia, I will have light string cheese with half an ounce of nuts. That always stays the same. I'm a creature of habit and these are what work for me.

I am 5 months out and I drink decaf. Pre surgery I didn't drink decaf too much. But for me, personally, when I drank the leaded post op, if I would skip just one day having any, I would have the dreaded caffeine withdrawal headache. So I just switched to decaf and no headaches. That said..I use powder milk and sugar free syrup in mine when I do have it. It really wasn't until I hit about month 4ish that I could tolerate coffee in the first place. It gave me a grumpy sleeve before that.

I still take mine and i had my surgery back in October. I tried to stop but no buenos. Wasnt good, i have too much acid that creeps back up if i miss it.
-
How do you know when to stop?
gomekast replied to Aunt GG's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I measured at first..but very quickly out I would hiccup or my nose would run. At 5 months out i still get one of these 2 signs. -
You ate too fast and too much. It sucks, Im sorry.

What's better? Unjury or Isopure Unflavored Protein Powder?
gomekast replied to lapnicky's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Try both and decide for yourself. I like unjury myself but tried them all before. Your sleeve will ultimately decide for you. -
Im 5 months out and still battle this. I added exercise to try to counter it and that slowed the loss but increased the inches lost. Over all tho i feel better than before i had the surgery so Im ok with it for now.
