SmartShape Dr. Coburn traveling from edmonton
Chris51 replied to edmontongirl's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hi thiberr I too found the shakes hard. But am now a month and a half post op and have had no problems at all Good luck and keep us informed on your progress. Chris -
In my case I would have to say yes my wife was very worried about me getting skinny and leaving her I think it was one of the driving reasons she asked me to stop the process when I was originally scheduled for surgery a few years ago. It just took me until this summer to make her realize that as far as I'm concerned I had won the marriage Lottery and that I wanted too do it, so that I could be around with her in my life longer.

I agree with all the posts here I have been on my CPAP for 10 years and I have to say that it changed my life I cannot imagine sleeping without it now. Like an earlier poster mentioned it takes a little bit of getting used to but stick with it you will not regret it. Good luck

I guess I have not had the same experiences that you guys say happened to people you know. My mom who passed a few years ago from lung cancer had the very best care I would expect from any dr. Anywhere. When she went to see her dr. And he suspected lung cancer the tests required happened within days. Unfortunately by the time she finally went to her dr. It was too late. It had traveled through her body. Yet they did not give up she was given radiation treatment and chemo all of which happened immediately. When they determined she was terminal and would not survive no matter what the level of intervention, she was given the choice to go into a hospital and be taken care of, or be at home with her family which she chose. They provided nurses to come to the house and assist us with her needs. In this case I can say that the care she received was exceptional. My father recently was diagnosed with Dementia and is now in long term care. All this happened within a few weeks of when we the family determined intervention was necessary to ensure his safety. He is now in long term care and from what we can see the care he receives is again exceptional. I have had to access emergency care that required cat scans and MRI's and have had them happen within an hour of them being required. My wife who required surgery for a broken wrist that had set badly was scheduled and operated on next day. So for me I have seen the best our system has to offer and none of the bad and I have been accessing this system for 52 years and have yet to receive a bill.

You make socialized medicine sound terrible !! I had a choice when it came to wls surgery within Alta Canada. Have Alberta health care pay for it or pay myself. A few years ago I was inline for wls surgery and the only people who could deny it or approve it were my dr. And the surgeon. Yes it was a process but at the time it was covered and still is to my knowledge. I backed out because at the time I was afraid of the potential complications and my wife was dead set against it. Biggest mistake of my life was backing out as I was only a couple of weeks out from surgery. When I made the decision to get it done this summer I opted for self pay and had it done in Ontario. Fortunately I am in the situation where I can afford it and did not want to wait. Not everyone has the financial resources I do but are still able to access the operation if required. I know of two surgeons in a local city in Alberta who do this surgery almost exclusively.

Like I said we have our issues nothing is perfect. I too have had severe back issues and have not encountered the issues you have sorry ! But I will not go bankrupt because I got sick or put my family's future at risk because of it. I will take that any day. Obviously you have really good insurance and can afford it, can you say the same for all Americans I would say probably not. So why would you deny them access if they cannot afford it. And even though you are an American you will not get a bill for the services you did receive even if you were not happy with them here in canada.
-
Hmm at least here in canada no one goes bankrupt if they get sick ! pre existing condition no problem covered! most provinces allow wls surgery but if you want it faster you can pay for it no problem ! Been diagnosed with cancer, heart disease etc. you get treated. No one will tell you you have exceeded coverage and send bills for thousands of dollars to your mail box. No one will have to make a decision on if they can afford to take their children to the hospital/Dr. If they get sick. Our system has it's problems but I will take our system over yours any day !!!!!!!

EAT ANYTHING YOU WANT & STILL LOSE WEIGHT!
Chris51 replied to Jean McMillan's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Magazine
I have just noticed that Slimband in Toronto are now advertising on TV. Part of the sales pitch that they mentioned as part of this advertisement is that you can eat whatever you want only in smaller portions Then they have pictures of burgers, pizza etc. etc. I would say this is kind of misleading what do you think?? -

Pre-op food tantrum, how do you cope?
Chris51 replied to NiftyNinjanator's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You definitely are not alone!!! I am on day 8 of a 16 day pre-op (Surgery August 30th) on Monday I got into a big argument with my wife that I needed to have solid food as i was starving. She kept asking me if it was hunger or if I was just craving solid food like someone who craves a cigarette. It was a craving! It is hard but I personally am trying hard to focus on the big picture and visualizing myself in normal sized clothes and being able to be more active. Hang in there ??? Chris
