What OTCs do you take?
jessiquoi replied to GottaDoSomethin''s topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This topic gives me something new to worry about . Tylenol is contraindicated for my continuous glucose monitor, and I've only been using ibuprofen for years. I'm definitely going to look into homeopathic remedies. Thanks for all the info! -
I had my first surgeon visit yesterday
jessiquoi posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I am very excited! Due to a myriad of health issues over the last 3 months, I've already had most of the pre-op testing required. I just have to get with my PCP to have the records sent over to the surgeon. I live in MD, and will be using Dr. Kim at Harford Memorial Hospital in Havre de Grace. I am starting my three-month supervised weight loss with the team. They want me to lose 5% of my weight by surgery. I started following as many of their recommendations as I could yesterday, and by last night I was totally freaking out. My relationship with food is so strong, and so TWISTED. The thing is, I really and truly love healthy food, and always get my nutrients in via food, but a) my portion control sucks, and I also eat a lot of crap. I am going to have to do this one day at a time, making changes slowly but surely. In order to keep myself from eating all night long, I had to go to sleep at 7pm. My poor boyfriend is going to be lonely in the evenings until I can manage staying awake in the evening without eating. He's super supportive, and has himself lost over 100lbs without surgery. I can't believe I am probably going to be approved for an early October surgery. I have a feeling the time is going to fly! -
This is actually my SECOND first surgeon visit lol. Last summer, I started the journey towards banding. I attended the info session at the hospital, but after my first surgeon's visit, I backed out. I thought, if I can follow the 3 month required pre-op weight loss regimen, I should be able to finish it myself. (Um, I was wrong.) Also, the doctor made me a little uncomfortable, because he was insisting that I would be able to stop using insulin after the surgery, and I'm a Type 1 diabetic, and require insulin to live. I spent the last year trying intermittently to lose weight, and couldn't keep it up on my own. Meanwhile, my knees and hips and back started to complain loudly about carrying around the extra weight. I am in a great relationship with a great guy who is very active, and I am so frustrated at not being able to keep up with him. I'm an ex-athlete and I can't believe I am where I am right now. My PCP and my Endocrinologist have both mentioned that having WLS is something I should seriously think about, and so, I am starting again. However, after reading more and more on this site, I've switched my surgery preference from band to sleeve. I'm very excited about the upcoming surgery, and I spend a lot of time visualizing me in one year, kayaking with John, walking everywhere instead of having to be dropped off in front of the building, getting rid of high blood pressure meds (4/day), cholesterol meds, perhaps the CPAP I sleep with... I've been lurking on the forums for about 2 months now, and did the same a year ago. I thank everyone for your informative posts, from the veterans who are so inspirational, to the newbies whose steps I will be following hopefully soon. Your stories have been so helpful I am impelled to share my own to give back. I hope I get a better impression of the surgeon this time (really, the only thing that bothered me was his lack of knowledge about my diabetes, but my Endocrinologist told me not to worry about that, she will be on top of that for me). If I don't feel comfortable, I will find another. Wish me luck on Wednesday!

try, if you can, not to be resistant to the test. i thought i slept fine too, until i had a sleep study (done in the hospital) and found i had severe obstructive apnea. i had a lot of trouble getting used to the cpap, and a friend who successfully used one told me not to give up and to try different style masks. i could not use the one with the nose thingees, i finally settled on one that covers my whole nose and it's very comfortable. i can't sleep without it now. i'm not saying that you DO have sleep apnea, just saying that IF you do, there are many options when it comes to masks, and with patience and a little time you will find the one most comfy for you. good luck!

I am a Type 1 Diabetic who is going for her first dr. appt next week, and would love to hear from any other Type 1 Diabetics who have been banded.

The only way you can fail is if you stop trying. Read the posts by some of the more experienced bandsters, and learn as much as you can. You can do anything if you are kind to yourself through the process and communicate with your doctor and team and other bandsters about any issues or concerns you are having. Good luck!

I have my first appointment with the bariatric surgery team this Thursday, and will find out how long I have to wait then. Patience is not my strong suit! I would love to be banded by the end of the year... keeping my fingers crossed.

Dust myself off and try again....
jessiquoi replied to Anume 937's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You've maintained the weight you lost, and that's a great thing, and managed to continue losing. Good luck picking up the pace again, and be proud of your accomplishment to date! -
Any Type 1 Diabetics had this surgery and want to share?
jessiquoi posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi, I'm insulin dependent and wondering how difficult it was to manage your diabetes during the pre and post op phases. I'm scheduled for my first doctor visit next week, and would appreciate any insight you can share about managing low sugars while on a restricted diet, etc. thanks, jess
