Just starting - 1st Dr Appt

tomorrow i go to the hospital to have most of my pre-op testing done, i was able to schedule a lot of it for the same day. in fact, after tomorrow, the only things left are my endoscopy and colonoscopy, which will be later this month. i can't wait for tomorrow to be over. the time before surgery is going by quickly because i am always looking towards the next little milestone, the next appointment.

    One week post sleeve

Congratulations! Thanks for sharing. Good attitude "hanging in there"!
  3. i also backed out last year, and am back again this year. no turning back this time for me either! i can relate totally. instead of berating myself for not going forward previously, i'm looking at the last year as additional prep time required before i had the surgery, namely mental prep time. i had a similar situation when i first started using an insulin pump over 20 yrs ago. i KNEW the minute i heard about it that it was the right tool for me, but it took me a year to get mentally adjusted to the idea of having a machine attached to myself 24/7. congrats on being ready!!
  4. i smoke just about every evening, just a little toke or two on my pipe, my equivalent of an after work martini. i don't get the munchies, and i love not having the calories from alcohol. i'm so curious about how i will feel after surgery when i smoke. and for the record, i'm an incredibly productive member of society.
  5. the things they put us through! just keep your sense of humor (love the title of your post) and the time will pass. (that said, i'm SO GLAD my doc only does 4 day liquid preop!!!)

    Miserable - Relationship Sucks

I am so sorry you are going through this. I can relate, as my partner smokes too, and when he gets into bed just after smoking, I have to tell/ask him to please wash his hands and brush his teeth. I feel guilty about asking him, but more than that I feel entitled to not want to snuggle with someone who smells bad to me. Do you want a divorce if he continues to smoke? I know you're worried about what he might do, but I'm wondering what you really want. Is this a dealbreaker for you, or does your relationship have enough good things to outweigh this? None of us are perfect, we all have our flaws. The kicker is whether we can accept the other's flaws or not. If you don't want a divorce... if it was me, I would apologize for letting things getting so out of hand, and try to work together towards a solution. Counseling? More defined guidelines about where and when you can tolerate his smoking? Wouldn't it be great if there WERE a surgery for helping them to stop smoking? I have decided that my relationship is worth accepting his smoking. You have to make that decision for yourself, and then reopen the lines of communication with him. The longer you don't speak to each other, the worse it gets, in my opinion. You will feel better clearing this stressor off your chest as you prepare for your own life-changing event. Congratulations on doing what you need to do to take care of you! And good luck working things out.
  8. @@jewelski, my deepest apologies if anything i said hurt you. as @@LindafromFlorida said, we reacted from fright and from a place of caring. none of us are in any position to be judgemental... we just want you to succeed and be healthy, MOST important to be healthy, and that means changing the behaviors you are telling us about, that you are asking us for help about. maybe the help you are asking for would best come from a therapist? we are not qualified to answer your question "what's wrong with me?" i know that i couldn't handle making all these changes without the support of my therapist and the happy meds that my psychiatrist prescribes. please don't let this turn you off to the forums. you are always welcome to say whatever you need to here, including slapping us if we answer less gently than we should have. it's hard to read emotion into written responses. we are here for you, and your response to our responses show that indeed, NONE of us are perfect.
  9. @@4me4them, good luck to you too! I'm glad to meet someone in the same place in the process as me. Looking forward to sharing.
  10. According to the scale in the surgeon's office, I am down 5.6 lbs this month. Yay me! They want me to lost 14 total in the three months prior to surgery. I've made more changes than I thought possible: 1. cut out between meal Snacks 2. cut out most of the crap 3. cut back on the volume of food at each meal I still haven't added exercise to the mix, though. I have been blocked mentally with everything I think I'm going to start doing. I'm not sure why, but I think it has to do with living with my boyfriend. I want to exercise with him (in my mind, because I imagine it to be a healthy activity we could share), but in reality I don't ENJOY exercising with him, because I like to be totally focused on form and put in 100%, and him, not so much. And once I'm home, I don't want to go out again without him. And it's been way too hot and humid for me to handle walking outside, so there's another excuse. Ugh. So I talked about this with the exercise physiologist on the team at yesterday's visit, and she gave me a great idea. I'm going to start stopping off at various big box stores on the way home from work and walk them for 20 - 30 minutes before I get home. I'm thinking I can work this into my chores so I can accomplish stuff I would normally do on the weekend after work, and kill two birds with one stone. I just need to get STARTED. I really enjoy the feeling of exercising regularly, but man I'm so hard to kick start. I found out I only have to do 4 days of all liquid right before the surgery, so I'm hoping I won't have as rough a time as others I've read about. And I found out that I don't have to worry if I don't exactly make the 14 lbs they asked me to lose... as long as it's obvious that I'm working successfully to lose weight, it's ok. Here's to the next month, 2 of 3 pre-op! I have all of my tests except the endoscopy and colonoscopy scheduled for next Friday. That's my next milestone. I think the time is going to fly. I'm on track for a late September/early October surgery date.

    Struggling

36 pounds IS losing. That's almost 20 lbs/month! Would you have been able to do that before surgery? Relax and try to enjoy the journey to the new you. Follow all the instructions and you will get there. Celebrate every pound that is gone, you deserve to treat yourself as a success!
  12. Please listen to the other posters and stop this behavior. You must follow the after care instructions in order to heal properly. You don't want to end up with complications! Be strong. Remember that you had this surgery to improve your life. Don't risk ruining any chance of a positive outcome! We're here to support you, vent as needed, but follow your instructions!

    13 days and counting!

Welcome! So far I've tried a few, and unjury chocolate Splendour is my favorite. All of them taste just fine to me while I'm drinking them, but some of the others seem to leave an aftertaste later.

    Eating?

Just be careful... from what I've read, it seems that what you CAN eat is not necessarily what you SHOULD eat while you're healing. I know you're two months out, but I've read here that healing fully takes a lot longer. Be cautious about pushing the limits your surgeon and NUT set for you. Congrats on the losing!

    I got sleeved yesterday!

congratulations! everything i've been reading on these forums for the last year have taught me that the most important things to do now are to follow your doctor's orders to a T, get all your Water in, and get all your Protein in. and rest and heal! let us know how you are doing.

Just starting - 1st Dr Appt

I'm just a little ahead of you too. I have my first follow up with the NUT today, so I'm one month into the process. Got all my tests scheduled, and am expecting to have surgery, if all goes well, sometime in late September/early October. Good luck!

    First nut appt

It is exciting, isn't it? I have my first follow up with the NUT today, one month after my first appointment with the surgeon and his team. I can't wait to see how much I've lost on their "official" scale. Mine has it at about 7 lbs. Good luck!
  23. You can do this! You said the most you ever lost was 60 lbs... 70 lbs is only 10 more than that. It's a challenge, and the payoff is great. Keep posting and telling us how you are doing, ask for help when you need it, like in this post, and let us support you. I can't wait to hear how you're doing in a week or two!

    Pre Op and Nervous

I love it, your re-birthday! There is a lot of information out there comparing the types of surgeries, and I'm sure someone will point you to the "best" places to look... I'm not up on that stuff. I chose the sleeve because it seemed to be less traumatic to the body. I just wasn't comfortable with the idea of the bypass. That's a personal thing. I know people who have had the bypass and been very successful. I originally was planning on the band because I thought it was the least invasive, but changed my mind after comparing the amount of after care (fills, etc) required. The important question is, why did YOU pick the sleeve? Everyone has their own reasons. You will lose the weight whichever you choose if you follow the rules your surgeon's team sets out for you. If you're still unsure about your choice, read people's posts on each of the surgery-specific forums. Read a LOT. I forced myself to read everything for weeks, from success stories to complications stories. Eventually you will be as well-versed as possible, and hopefully that will make you more confident in your decision.
