I am excited to have a lap band on July 22, 2013, one month before my 63rd birthday! I am a survivor of the diet wars; I've tried everything including fasting as a teenager (all I did was faint at the zoo on a hot day. I've done Weight Watchers, Diet Center, my own invented diets. It goes on and on. Hopefully, this will be something that will take the excess weight off of me for my senior years. Already the diseases of obesity are creeping up on me: high blood sugar, diabetes, sleep apnea, lack of energy. I look to all of you for hope and encouragement! Of course, I want to be a source of that myself.

Woo! Let's keep up. Today I am not as enthusiastic and ate 3 (three) protein bars. But I turned down ice cream at my brother's. I'll let you know how it goes...

I love your post! My surgery is 2 weeks from Monday (July 22) and I am going to adopt all of these statements as my mantras (no, I won't plagiarize you.) The Lord bless you on your continued journey.

NowSiSSllllSince yesterday, the 4th of July, I have swung to the opposite side of the pendulum over my surgery. I went to a barbeque and decided to have one last blow-out before the pre-diet REALLY starts: hot dog, shish kebob, corn on the cob, salads, ice cream cone. I went home vowing never to eat again and scared to death about my surgery in 17 days. Not good, not good at all. Do I want to give up this fabulous overeating experience?? A friend asked me when my birthday was (August 21) because I had just taken her out for a steak dinner on her birthday last week. Only two people (one of them is taking me surgery day) about this surgery so I didn't say anything yet to this friend, but by the end of August I might just have to 'fess up. I'll suggest a movie. Many of you say that running the gamut of emotions is normal, right? -

I'm almost 63, NC Grammy, and I need the encouragement. I'm so glad it worked for you and that you are enjoying better health in your "golden" years, where I live now too. I'll just hang on the roller coaster and ride out any bad times! -

Now it's July! How did your surgery go? Let us know so some of us can grab your hand. I have 2 weeks, 4 days to go and I'm worried that I'm NOT worried. (Gotta worry about something.) I wish you nothing but the best. Post your present situation! -

Thanks to Lori 123 I remember that my cholesterol is going up too, along with blood pressure, diabetes, pain in joints,. At nearly 63 I am having surgery on July 22, 2013. I have no qualms, no fears, nothing except determination that THIS WILL WORK and the extra 80 pounds I am hauling around will come off! I know it is not a magic fix and that I will have to work hard too and follow instructions. Any pre-op advice for me? I'm on the diet. -
Hi, fellow over-60 friends. Are you still following this? I am only 62 until August and I'm too young for Medicare and my present insurance won't cover this. Soooooo, I scraped together the few pennies I have left to pay for this by myself. It had better be worth it, in other words I had better cooperate and follow the rules. I have strugged with weight loss since about age 15. I was not a really overweight kid or teenager, but after 15 I always wanted to lose weight. Well, my tiny mother wanted me to lose weight. Family dynamics are another story, but now I am the heaviest person in the family. Besides that, the health problems with obesity are starting up: high blood pressure, diabetes, bad knees, lack of energy, sleep apnea. I decided to face the rest of my senior years without weight weighing me down, so to speak. My surgery is July 22, 2013. I have no fear or apprehension at all, just excitement to get going. My facility is only a few miles away (not in Mexico) and my surgeon appears competent and qualified.
