Does surgery really make you feel full?
joatsaint replied to NewAshes's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The feeling of fullness is different for me post-op. I don't have that "ohhh I'm stuffed" stretched feeling. Now it's more like I have this little "poking" sensation somewhere down my throat. And there's no warning of when I'm full, so I have to be careful and slow when eating. I have a little 4oz Glad container I use for my food bowl. It holds just enough for one meal. I am definitely an unhappy camper when I eat too much. -
Favorite UNFLAVORED protein powder?
joatsaint replied to asmaclare's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The only one I've bought is from ISOPURE. It has no taste (yep, I dipped my finger and cringed as I tasted it - no flavor whatsoever) But you can't cook with it. I just blend it or sprinkle it into my food after its cooked - re fried Beans, puree cauliflower, lasagna, soup, whatever. It is pretty good as a thickener. -

1 month post op. Can I eat peanuts?
joatsaint replied to schavez2010's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was eating peanuts and sunflower seeds by the 5th week. Only a limited amount, say just enough for one bite. Or about 1 tablespoon of creamy Peanut Butter per day. At that time I was still only able to eat 3/4 of a can of Soup per day, so I couldn't hold much. My stomach would grumble, but it would tolerate them. -
Confused. Do we want to be in ketosis?
joatsaint replied to TexasMiss's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Being in ketosis is a good thing. It means your body has used up all the sugar stored and is now burning fat for fuel. You can still eat a limited amount of low glicemic carbs and not leave ketosis. Here are some of the foods I avoid: 1. Carbohydrate-rich vegetables, such as carrots, peas, potatoes and Cereal grains, should be eaten in moderation. 2. High-carb fruits such as grapes, apricots, bananas, olives and peaches, as well as extracts and juices from these fruits, should be replaced with low-carb fruits such as watermelons, strawberries, melons and avocados. 3. Fluids with high carbohydrate contents, such as beers and non-diet soft drinks and beverages, are not recommended for your diet. The high-sugar contents in these drinks will replace fats as the primary energy-producing nutrients, increasing the risk of having more fats in the body. 4. Processed foods, such as most canned foods, have carbohydrate contents that are high enough to disrupt the function of a ketogenic diet. pastas and milk products should also be avoided because they have high carbohydrate contents. 5. Seafoods, such as clams, blue crabs, lobsters, scallops and squids, are low in fats. However, they are rich sources of Proteins and fatty acids. -
24 hours after surgery
joatsaint replied to Bridget312001's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
It does get better. I didn't eat anything for the 1st 5 days. I was in a lot of pain and my stomach rebelled with even the smallest bites. I wasn't able to eat a whole can of Soup in a day until the 3rd week. I could tell when I was getting full when I'd start to burp, and I'd have to eat very very slow. I'm talking 1/2 tsp every 5 minutes. I could take one bite to many and be in misery. I was still learning how much I could hold. So try to hang in there. It does get better, but it takes time. -
What to expect from the hospital stay?!
joatsaint replied to sparkle843's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
All I brought was my CPAP and cell phone. I only needed the CPAP. I wore the hospital gown and screaming yellow anti-slip socks they gave me until it was time to go home. The one thing you can expect is to get very little rest. Between the nurses coming in every 2 hours to check my vitals or give me meds or get me up to walk, along with all the noise in the hallways. I didn't get much rest in the 2 days I was there. But overall, it wasn't a bad experience. -
My eyes are too big for my tummy!
joatsaint replied to bringiton's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Me too. I made the mistake of switching to a 1 cup size bowl from a 4oz. and I knew right off I had made a mistake. Nice isn't it? -
No punching kittens! But feel free to rant or rave about how much you WOULD ENJOY punching a kitten - since they're all about me me me. You can only take that crap from a kitten for so long!

I wore mine for 2 weeks, just to be safe. My doc said I could take it off after 7 days.
-
I get it too, after eating and 1st thing when I wake up. I didn't really notice it at first - until I saw a question about it on here. Then I started noticing how often it was happening.

At three weeks, I was only able to tolerate Protein Drinks and Cream of Mushroom/Cream of chicken Soup. That was pretty much my diet for weeks 3 and 4. As far as the mashed potatoes, it's the total amount you're eating per day that you should track. If your getting your recommended grams of Protein in, then you probably aren't going to have much room for potatoes.

I wouldn't buy too much, cause you're probably going to be out and about after a few days. I know I was itching to get out of the house by day 7. But I would get a couple of boxes of sugar free popsicles, boxes of sugar free Jello and some chicken broth. And it wouldn't hurt to have a couple of cans of Cream of Chicken and/or Cream of Mushroom Soup. I pretty much lived on Cream of Mushroom and Protein drinks for a few weeks. My fav Protein Drink (and the only one I've tried ) is EAS carb control chocolate fudge from Walmart (4 for $5). I liked the flavor enough that I didn't waste money trying more expensive things.

My stomach didn't tolerate salad/broccoli/cauliflower/or any kind of fruit till about the 3rd month. Week 1 was pretty much nothing - I was feeling so much pain, I couldn't eat. Week 2 - 4 was protein drinks and Cream of Chicken soup. Weeks 5 - 8, I was eating grilled chicken I ran through the food processor, refried beans and salsa pretty much 24/7. Since then, my stomach will grumble but tolerate - tomatoes, cauliflower, broccoli, mushrooms, carrots, and (insert any fibrous vegetable here). And it grumbles but tolerates any fruit I've tried - apples, bananas, strawberries, grapes, pineapple. All you can do is test your stomach with a very small bite and wait a few minutes to see how it responds.

Updated - Really Cool Recipe - Make Spaghetti Noodles from Chicken Meat
joatsaint commented on joatsaint's blog entry in Gastric Sleeve Surgery - An Unexpected Journey
I haven't tried it yet, I've got too much food already prepared for the next few days. I may try making it on Friday or Saturday. I wish I had found something like this a long time ago, when I was doing Atkins. -
How did you not lose you jobs?
joatsaint replied to tamarlarae's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I work in an education related business. We get the same days off as the schools. I had my surgery done during the Xmas vacation days. But I could have done it over Spring Break. I had all my tests done and was in surgery all within 3 weeks. I only took 1 day off for the initial testing. -
The original recipe page does not load for me, so I had to use Google cache to get the recipe off Rachael's site. Watch the video, use this link: http://www.rachaelra...ta-al-pomodoro/ Rocco DiSpirito's Pasta al Pomodoro Aired on: April 1, 2013 Before: 17 grams of fat 840 calories After: 6 grams of fat 133 calories Ingredients 3/4 cup cold Water 2 tablespoons egg powder 6 ounces cold chicken breast, cut into 1 inch chunks 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil 7 cloves garlic, sliced thin 1 pinch red chili flakes (pepperoncino) 2 cups whole fresh ready to burst ripe tomatoes, cut into large dice Salt and fresh ground pepper to taste 1 ounce Parmigiano-Reggiano, freshly grated 16 leaves of fresh basil, torn by hand into small pieces Yields: 4 Preparation Boil 4 quarts of water in a large pot. Once the water is boiling add 2 tablespoons of salt. Preheat broiler. Place the water and the egg white powder in the beaker of a blender, and blend on low speed until all the powder has dissolved, then add the chicken breast and blend on high speed until smooth and glossy. Place the contents of the blender into a squeeze bottle and set in the refrigerator. Pour the olive oil into a large nonstick sauté pan and then lay out the garlic slices in one even layer over the top of the pan. Place the pan over medium to high heat and cook the garlic until it begins to brown, then move the pan to the middle rack of the oven under the broiler to continue to brown the top of the garlic, about 1 minute. Place the pan back on the stove and add red chili flakes and half the basil leaves, cook for 15 seconds and then add the tomatoes. Cook the tomatoes over medium heat until the sauce comes to a simmer and let cook until the sauce has slightly thickened but still loose, about 2 minutes. Add half of the cheese and stir it completely into the sauce and turn off the stove and season lightly with salt and fresh ground black pepper. Turn the boiling water down to low heat and squeeze the chicken mixture out of the squeeze bottle in a steady stream into the boiling water into strands the same length as spaghetti, about 10 inches until there is no more room on the surface of the water. Let the noodles cook for 30 seconds then remove them with a strainer or spider, set them aside in a bowl and repeat until all of the chicken mixture is used. Add the noodles to the pan and turn the heat to medium high heat. Toss the pasta to coat evenly with a heat resistant rubber spatula and cook until the sauce begins to cling to the noodles. Add the remaining basil and check seasoning. Plate the pasta on four separate plates and sprinkle with remaining cheese. Tip: Use a store-bought, fat free, no added sugar marinara sauce and you can make this meal in less then 10 minutes. Per Serving: 133 calories, 6.17g fat (2g sat, 3g mono, 1g poly), 6.25mg cholesterol, 114.75mg sodium, 4.575g carbohydrates, 1.1g Fiber, 13.05g Protein

Congrats on your 1st NSV. Keep pimpin that sleeve! -
Thanks for posting this. I know about that temptation to splurge and overeat after a workout. Although I knew the workout really didn't burn a thousand calories, I wanted to reward myself for making the effort.

unflavored protein powder
joatsaint replied to misschatterbox's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have tried Isopure and it has no taste. I put in everything from Crystal Light to my re-fried Beans, but I've only bought it online. I figure by the time I spend $6 bucks on gas and 2 hours driving to GNC, waiting in line and getting back home, it's just easier to buy it online. Nature's Best Isopure Unflavored (Zero Carb), 3-Pound Tub w/free shipping -
I don't think you're alone. I've been off balance a few times and have stumbled a few times, but I just wrote it off to not paying attention. But maybe I'm going through the same thing.
