Acid Reflux
I♡BypassedMyPhatAss♡ replied to Dcsjoc's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's different than heartburn. It's the acid that causes heartburn, except it flows back up into your esophagus. It happened to me day and night. Nighttime was the worst. Imagine laying in bed sleeping and suddenly feel like you're choking in your sleep, yeah that's reflux. Sometimes it comes up into your nose too. At least it did for me. Then I started sleeping in a recliner. It didn't stop the reflux, it just prevented being woken suddenly to choking on stomach acid. Lap band and sleeve seem to alter the function of the spinchter that closes off the stomach from the esophagus. So now that my lap band has been removed, it seems I have traded the reflux for constant heartburn. Now if I eat something spicy, my esophagus feels the way your skin would feel if you had a burn that you put hot water on. My esophagus actually feels scalded. I'm thinking about this now as I'm about to have some buffalo wings before the superbowl, lol. It's a miserable existance. -
Acid Reflux
I♡BypassedMyPhatAss♡ replied to Dcsjoc's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I got lap band in 2013, and had it removed in 2021 due to developing horrible reflux. I'm in the process of revising to gastric bypass now. Lap band and sleeve are both high pressure systems that are known to cause reflux for a good amount of people. Unfortunately I wasn't aware of this when I was banded. Are you taking any PPI's to reduce stomach acid? That's fairly common after these procedures. I'd make contact with your surgeon to make them aware of what's happening. -

@Jersey Girl in Tampa I'm in the Tampa area too. Who's your surgeon? -
Of course I don't know you. But perhaps when you're typing in a forum like this you should be specific about whom you're typing about. We're not mind readers. Thanks for the well wishes and I wish you the same!

When I had my lap band I had Mirena. It's a bish placing it, but once you get past that, it's nice not having periods for five years. It actually helped with my band being too tight during my period. Before I had the Mirena, my band would become so restricted during my period that I had to have liquids during that time, so the Mirena helped by stopping my period. By year four, I had an abdominal CT for something else, and the radiologist noted that the Mirena had migrated into my uterine wall. So out it came. This was only my experience, I know it doesn't happen to the majority of Mirena users. I never cared for the pill. I didn't like the side effects. There's also Nuva Ring. It's been around for years. -

I agree with everyone above who recommended seeing a bariatric therapist. And I think you need to remind yourself the reason you had this surgery to begin with. You have a desire to become a parent, and this is a tool that you chose to help you get to that goal. If you get on board with your surgeons program and follow it, and seek therapy, hopefully the PCOS will be reversed and you can have a child. Visualize your goals. You can do this!

Lapband to VSG now to RNY

Very wise doctor. And sorry to hear about your previous kidney stones. I've only had the one so far and I'm not keen to experience it again. They suck. -
Lapband to VSG now to RNY
I♡BypassedMyPhatAss♡ replied to southernbanded's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Yes indeed, they are silly things that imo should've never been approved in the first place. My surgeon told me that all of the weight that I lost with my lap band, I most likely did it on my own with little help from the band. I'm looking forward to RNY soon. -
Lapband to VSG now to RNY
I♡BypassedMyPhatAss♡ replied to southernbanded's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Both lap band and gastric sleeve operate under a "high pressure" system which can cause the sphincter to malfunction. From what I've been reading here and from personal experience with my lap band and developing gerd due to it, it's a process that takes several years to come to a head. I was on Protonix 2x daily for the last 2.5 years of having my lapband. It didn't control the reflux at all, it only caused me to develop a kidney stone from overuse of PPI's, so after 7 years of having the band placed, I had it removed. I've seen people comment, "I control my acid by taking Prilosec, etc everyday... so it's okay to get VSG" or "I take Prilosec everyday after having my VSG and everything is fine." To me that's dangerous thinking, because I know first hand that these drugs have long term side effects. Kidney stones aren't fun. -

Dr says no more protein shakes
I♡BypassedMyPhatAss♡ replied to soulfiremama's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yeah this doesn't seem right to me either. During the first 6 weeks your body is healing from surgery. It's common knowledge that incisions and even the muscles and tissues cut internally need protein to heal, even extra protein at times for surgeries with larger incisions, so this seems counterproductive to me. -

I can't believe how much run around some offices are giving y'all! I have my "first" appointment with my surgeon today for revision purposes. Albeit, I'm not a new patient at this office, I want to share how this office works. Yesterday, the patient coordinator called me to let me know what my insurance requires as far as how many visitis, etc., and what costs I'll be responsible for. She said that the way things look right now, I could possibly be scheduled for surgery by the end of March or early April. -

Ask for the office manager. That's ridiculous. My previous surgeons office was similar to this, but my new surgeon has a much more efficient office and staff.
