I'm just not understanding the food part of all this.
ADJL posted a topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I had my second fill yesterday up to 4ccs and I believe I've hit my green zone. I had a yogurt this morning and if I hadn't had to feed my kids I wouldn't have even thought about food all day...so I had a Protein shake (liquids and mushies only today!) and I really don't want anything else. But...eating 500 cal/day is only going to hurt me in the end... How do ya'll get in enough food when you don't want to eat? They say 3 meals /day but only a cup of food...how does that add up to enough? I just am not understanding how I'm supposed to be eating. I already have an unhealthy relationship with food and I don't want to make it worse.... On Monday I'll be making an appt with my nutritionist, but honestly? I usually get better information from this forum. Help! There are so many success stories...how are you doing the food part? -

How do you do this? Is it based on what your body says is enough or by how much/often you exercise? Or what? I do myfitnesspal and am pretty consistent at 1000-1100cal/day. That's me getting in my Protein first then eating what more I want. I'm not actually dieting as in forgoing food when I'm still hungry...that's me feeling satisfied after meals. -

Drinking just fine...but if its anything with substance like a shake I'm definitely filling up fast. I workout in the AM and the band gets tight so I almost always do a Protein shake in the morning. This is such a crapshoot...eat too much and I sabotage...eat too little and I sabotage. I don't trust myself enough to just do what my body wants without some boundaries (like no salt and vinegar Pringles allowed) or I'd just eat crap and I don't want to be a fat skinny person. I want to be healthy and athletic. I feel like I'm teetering on a tightrope between making it or not making it based on getting this right. -
I haven't gone yet. They just started them up again at Ft. Campbell. First Monday of each month at noon. We can try the August one.

Awesome job...and I second what Jim1967 said! -
I used Lehman! Are you local? We should connect. He is an awesome doc...good surgeon.

I had mine done at BACH in Fort Campbell...the process is super quick...no diet for me either...I guess they figure if your PCP refers you that they've tried everything else? Anywho...hopefully all your paperwork will transfer. It might be a matter of having it resubmitted to your doc at the MTF by each provider.

Interesting question...the first time I brought up WLS to my husband he said, "no way! You'd never enjoy food again!" I'm happy to say he was wrong. So...he's currently deployed, but I can tell you what I've been trying to prepare him for when we talk... 1. Big meals no longer exist...I don't cook a carb, meat vegetable rounded out with dessert anymore. I cook to fit my dietary needs (protein+vegetable) and keep simpler carb sides for my kids (rolls, potatoes, rice on hand to supplement) 2. We no longer eat carb based meals like Pasta. 3. My portion size is tiny. I. Used to eat a steak by myself. Now my kids and I share one and there are leftovers. 4. Taking time to exercise. I have to exercise or I will fail at this. So, I expect him to understand that and provide me time to do that. 5. Support vs sabotage. My hubby used to sabotage my diets all the time without really meaning to. But he would say things like, "you've been working so hard that ice cream won't hurt." But it did and it does. Hopefully your wife is really supportive...it makes all the difference!

Very Depressed. Food is winning, I am losing this battle
ADJL replied to Dusty Roses's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
And get those trigger foods out of your house! Salt and vinegar Pringles are mine...if they are there...my WANT power is reduced to nothing in a matter of seconds so I solved the problem by eliminating them completely from my food cupboards. I also keep a list of Snacks on my fridge door that are "healthy" so if I'm grazing I at least have to look at the good options before choosing something. -
I'm a type 2 diabetic (diagnosed in Feb) which is what started me on the lapband quest in the first place...that plus high cholesterol has me taking pills/insulin shots that I'd lOVE to stop. I personally feel like medication can help, but there is a cost to that with introducing them into your body (think side effects) so I am and always have been very anti-medication unless you ABSOLUTELY have to have it. (not everyone's opinion, but its mine...) So...what was the point where you/your doctor decided to stop the medication and see how your body was handling things on its own? I've just been changed to a new PCP and she is resistant to even having me try. She wouldn't even give me a timeframe...just said that it was the meds that were making my current bloodwork so good...and lending no support that maybe...just maybe its the 29 pounds I've lost in the past two months that helped it out too. Ultimately I know its my decision...but I would love to have my doctor on board and encouraging instead of making "I told you so" murmurs if my next bloodtests were to come back not as stellar as I would hope. I've been researching, but not finding much by the way of answers...wondering how others made the decision or by what criteria their doctors decided to stop the meds...?

I had to open up this thread simply because the title made my mouth water. Will definitely try this out!

Negative remarks -- from someone who should know better
ADJL replied to parisshel's topic in Rants & Raves
You don't NEED Pasta and starchy foods like the ones you mentioned anyway...you can get way better carbohydrates for your body from veggies and fruits. So...not only does she insult you, but she's giving you bad "advice" instead of commending you on making good choices and urging you to keep up the good work. So, I'll say it. YOU are making GOOD choices and keep up the good work! Its motivating to the rest of us! -
This was super interesting to me to hear...I never even thought about it. I've always thought that BMI was all wrong wrong wrong...and I'm intrigued by the idea to reduce my BFP. I'm in! I have absolutely no idea what to do to get started or even what an appropriate goal is so I'll have to do some research... Ultimately, the weight loss in pounds still plays a huge roll for me right now at the beginning, but I think that the closer I get to goal the more interesting it will be to track that body fat percentages...
