I had training today (and tomorrow) off-site. This facility has awesome catering. I was able to eat morning tea and lunch and only ate a snack I has brought for lunch. Here is what I had and I didn't feel sick at all. Breakfast at home: 1/2 cup yogurt, 1 small banana Morning tea: a tangerine and about 1/3 of a sausage roll Lunch: a prawn, a few bites of baked chicken (pretty moist and I took tiny bites), a crouton, a bit of boiled egg, half a thin slice of salami, a couple noodles from a noodle salad, small piece of tomato, small piece of capsicum. And one bite of strawberry cake. I logged all this and it was about 130 calories. Afternoon snack: 2 cheese sticks (instead of a timtam) I will probably just have the last of my purée chicken with some gravy for dinner. I will end up just over 800 calories. I listed this to show people what they might be able to look forward to. I know some people don't tolerate this stuff. One thing is that I have been able to tolerate Water but now that I'm on solids water tastes bitter.

I've lost 9 kg in a month.

I have never stared at a glass of water with such hatred.

That's sweet but it probably would, yeah. It's even hard to ship leather goods here. -

Yeah and Australia has very stringent food import rules. Because we grow a lot of food here. We are the second producer of banans and and top producer of ginger, I think. So our border patrol is extremely protective. I wouldn't even attempt to order food from the US and have it shipped here. On my next trip back I will stock up on whatever my suitcase can hold, though. It tends to be easier to get it in that way, especially if it is prepackaged and sealed. -
Striving to follow diet recommendations, but how serious are you?
mistysj replied to DudeCar59's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You need to work with your nutritionist on this. There are no "forbidden foods" on my plan, for instance. Instead, I am told to have X number of grain servings, X number of vegetable, X number of fruit, X number of dairy, X number of protein. If I get all of that in and still have room, I can have a bit of whatever. Without knowing what your plan is, it's hard to give you advice. And even if your plan is different from mine, you should follow yours. You chose your surgical team for a reason. -

I struggle with this too and we can't get Crystal Light or Mio in Australia. There are "cordial mixes" but they are mostly sugary. The only ones that come in diet are lemon, lime, and "lemon lime bitters" flavor. I don't care for the citrusy ones. i miss the Crystal Light packets from when I was in the US. I count coffee, tea, and non-chunky Soups as liquids and I still don't get enough. It's my one struggle. It's not really that the Water tastes bad, I just forget to drink it. If only I would feel thirsty. I am able to get it down better if I squeeze a lime wedge into a glass though. But I think it would be better if I could add some gin! -

mistysj replied to Lannie2202's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's a pretty big one and it doesn't cause me any trouble. Sorry you vomited. -
I'm only 3 weeks out and 7.2 kg down (16 lb) and all of my size 20 jeans and 2x tops are falling off me! People have actually told me this! I am going to start hitting the thrift shops this weekend. So grateful! Next week I will have my husband take a 1-month photo.

Nausea and multivitamin
mistysj replied to Lannie2202's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I take a solid vitamin but I don't get nauseated if I take it before bed. The nausea is usually from the iron. -
I had another great weigh-in and updated my signature. I'm in the 80s in kg, in Onederland in pounds, and just plain morbidly obese! Plus I think I weigh less than my husband, who is a foot taller than me.

Gotta get blood pressure down before 6/24 surgery

Cut out all table salt and salty foods and drink a lot of water. Walk, or increase your walking if you already do, every day. Why didnt you ask your doctor for suggestions? You can still call them. -
My band being removed. I'm trying to decide.. Sleeve or Bypass?
mistysj replied to pickel1972's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I hope you are asking on the RNY Talk board too. It is a sister of this site and you should get both sides. -
I have had smooth natural peanut butter in the purée phase with no trouble. A tablespoon of it is a great dessert.

This is a great question for your nutritionist or dietitian. We can't answer it without knowing what restrictions you will have on your diet at that time.
-
It has been answered a bunch of times and I'm sure you can search for it, but here is the short version. 1. It washes the food out of your stomach faster and you will get hungry again sooner, and take in more calories. 2. With your smaller stomach partially full of Water, you won't be able to fit in enough Protein and nutrients during your meal, which will set you up for nutrition deficiencies and make you feel hungrier again sooner.

Calories, Exercise, and Metabolism (long)
mistysj replied to OneWritersSoul's topic in WLS Veteran's Forum
I was told the way to get it back was serious strength training. I bought a full set of dumbbells but then had to travel for a month for work. I'm getting back to it this week. By the way I have also been told, by my surgeon, that with the sleeve, your metabolism responds positively to a feeling of fullness. Full stomach = body doesn't get the signal to store fat but to burn it. Under-eating = store energy for the famine. I have read about this in relation to RNY too. It's the "metabolically active" part of these surgeries that banders don't get. It's not necessarily about calories, but about stomach distension, meaning pressure on the top part of the stomach. Not extreme but just enough. I am still very new and shouldn't even be posting here but since you quoted me, I hope it's ok. I want to encourage you not to give up. I hope you find your answers soon even if it is an underlying issue that is holding you back. -
Yes. Lots of thin women ride big bikes.

Yeah sorry I took it off and will edit that post. That was not supposed to look how it looked. Janice can you please edit where you quoted me? It was not my intent to sound like a ******! LOL

10 days post-op and Im hungry!
mistysj replied to NewMe_05/29's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
First, it sounds like you are having head hunger. That takes a lot of work to get through but it is worth it. If your stomach is growling right now it is probably not real hunger. It is healing and you may be thirsty or there may be excess acid. That can mimic hunger and you can take a PPI to help. Talk with your doctor. Second, cheating on your post-op diet could kill you. The purpose of this phase of the diet is to let your stomach heal. This isn't a joke. A leak could kill you. Vomiting could cause a leak this early out, or over-filling your sleeve. If you get a complication, will that spoonful of spinach be worth having to go through another surgery? -
That's awesome! I am in the same boat as you. I left the hospital with my diabetes in remission and blood sugar levels below 5 mmol/l (80 mg/dl I think). No more metformin. Don't eat complacent though. Some people seem to have a honeymoon and then they have to start managing things again in a few years. Don't let this scare you but don't stop paying attention either.

Greek yogurt is regular yogurt that is strained (like curd is strained to make cheese). It has more Protein because there is more of the yogurt "solids" per volume than regular yogurt. Plain Greek yogurt tastes the same as plain normal yogurt. It's just that most of us are not used to eating plain yogurt at all. I have bought plain yogurt for years and add a teaspoon of jam or honey. While I'm on purée it's just honey. Although I have grown to like it plain. It's also nice to use as a dip. Just add some ranch or French onion Soup powder. I also mix a tbsp of Greek yogurt into cottage cheese because in Australia, cottage cheese is drained more and is more "dry" than the cottage cheese I grew up with in the US. I used to just add a little milk but the yogurt enhances the protein. I eat my cottage cheese with cracked pepper so I accept that I am a weirdo.

The most important thing is to go by your doctor's instructions before you follow the advice of people on a web forum.
