I read Good Calories Bad Calories years ago. It makes sense and I have tried to eat that way, but pre-sleeve it just triggered me to binge. I have to say that I think Gary Taubes is a fame whore and he sure acts a lot more like an expert (which he is not) than a journalist (which he is). I do think the sleeve or RNY guides us toward that way of eating anyway. Oh and that is a fuckeding huge book. One of my favorite books I have read in the last few years is a huge biography of Winston Churchill. I did it as an audiobook and it took me like a month but I loved every minute of it and I now have such a crush on him. LOL

You remind me of me. I'm currently reading a book called "Just Ride" about getting he most enjoyment out of bicycling without turning into one of those Lycra nerds you see running around like they are in the Tour de France! I always read books about new hobbies and interests.

The Wool series is great! I'm in trashy fiction mode and reading the Sookie Stackhouse books that the TV series True Blood is based on. I haven't seen the tv shows. I actually read constantly and have read almost 70 books in 2013. A lot of them this year were about weight loss surgery and the sleeve and nutrition. On my list for next year is to finally read the Game of Thrones books and the Wheel of Time books.

New guy here, you've GOT to read this!
mistysj replied to BigFrank's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Yep, I still have a crush on you. Your thread is my favorite success story on here. You have kicked azz and taken names. I love that you have continued to challenge yourself every single day. I think they should make your whole thread a "sticky" so everyone can see how awesome you have done. -
I loved the Hunger Games books but haven't had any desire to see the movies. But I find it ironic that all these WLS people are talking about the Hunger Games. Isn't that why we got the surgery, to win the Hunger Games?

If your doctor doesn't know what is wrong, it is highly unlikely that a bunch of strangers on the internet are going to figure it out. Please go to the ER or get another opinion.

You guys are doing awesome! I am taking a break from running this week because of my gallbladder surgery last Wednesday. One of the incisions is more painful than anything I had from my sleeve surgery! So just taking it easy and assuming I will be all good next week.

Salty and yeasty and a little bitter. It is nice on toast but you have to use literally the thinnest smear you can imagine. It is nice with a spoonful melted into beef bouillon.

Biscotti is actually pretty low-cal and you should be able to tolerate it because it is so crunchy...

How To Tell Caring People To Just Shut Up!?
mistysj replied to Seela's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
"I appreciate your concern. I am working closely with my doctor and dietitian and they have given me clear guidelines. These guidelines are not like any diet I have ever been on and may seem strange to you, but if I don't follow them I could end up really sick. So please trust that I am being Very careful and taking care of myself. " -
Anyone else still able to tolerate all foods?
mistysj replied to ChristyC23's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
I'm a sleever but it is interesting that so few bypassers seem to dump. I have seen people specifically going for bypass so they WOULD dump if they ate the "wrong" things. I hope they haven't been disappointed. A very few sleevers dump too. Lots of sleevers have trouble with really dry dense protein, fluffy bread, rice, and really fibrous veggies though. I don't have trouble with anything in moderation as long as I chew chew chew. I don't think any of us can rely on the "bad" foods making us sick to stay on the straight and narrow. Long term, everyone seems to adapt. It is so interesting to me how sleevers and bypassers seem to have similar journeys in the long term. -
Drippings would be gravy. Yes the coffee in the US is terrible but the bacon in Australia is a travesty!

Squash with soft skin like zucchini is called summer squash in the US because it won't last until the winter. Winter squash has a hard skin so you can save it to eat in the winter. Makes sense to me. Yes I'm American and have lived in Australia four years. I love it! But it is a different world. in some ways Australia is like the US 20 years ago and in other ways it might as well be Mars!

Pumpkin is used in savory dishes in Australia and New Zealand. Wacky eh? Also every winter squash is called pumpkin. They use sweet potatoes as a savory too! And put pickled beets, fried eggs, and pineapple on hamburgers! If I'm lyin' I'm dyin'!

Me too! We don't have Wendy's in Australia though. Well we do have a place called Wendy's but it is an ice cream place.

I love morels fried in butter. We used to live on a farm in Indiana and they grew all over our land. Several times we caught trespassers stealing them. They are expensive to buy at the markets!

Sue I am so proud of you for joining the gym! Woohoo!

Enough Already With The Compliments And Questions
mistysj replied to mistysj's topic in WLS Veteran's Forum
I do agree part of it is embarrassment. But part of it is people don't want to stop at "you look great" but they have all these questions. Then if you really answer them, they either get bored or they say stupid things. But if you don't answer the questions, you are the rude one for being evasive. -
I hope that's not one of the key ingredients.

I love the ED profanity. LOL

You are doing fantastic! Dropping sizes is so motivating, that's for sure. My only advice when going back to work is that remembering to keep hydrated is hard work. At first I needed alarms to remind me when to eat and drink. It didn't take long before it was second nature, though I still don't do as well as I would like with hydration.

Sounds fabulous, Kelli! The party was great. I got so many compliments. I have to say I am getting sick of the attention actually. Some people can be really inappropriate. But I looked good. We left by 10:30 because I was having pain from my incisions. I think I'm recovering ok from the gallbladder removal. As above, the incisions are still sore and I think I overdid it yesterday. I bought a bicycle and rode it home from the shop (about 5 km but I am so not used to it). Then the party. It was too much. But I think I have lost all the swelling since the surgery and two of my four bandages have come off. So the bike thing. I feel like I am ready to get a little more exercise on the weekends! I'm running three times a week about 6k per time (Monday, Wednesday, Friday) and don't really want to add more running. I do a lot of incidental walking which I don't really count as exercise. So I figured I would get a bike and I could use it to get to the shops or church or other small errands on the weekends. I might go for a ride on the bike paths too for fun. I don't see myself becoming one of those Lycra-clad "racer" types that you see everywhere around Brisbane. So I got a European style "touring bike" and had a huge wire basket installed on the front of it. The basket unsnaps for shopping too. Because I'm so short it is hard to fit me for a bike, but this one is great (just a tiny bit too tall maybe). I don't actually have a ton of cycling experience especially on the road, so I am going to stick to the easy stuff and have fun and go slow. This bike is a 7 speed and not too fancy. We went out for a short ride this morning, just 7 km along the bike paths. It felt good even though my bum is a bit tender! I love my sleeve and the fact that I am seeking out more ways to be active. I also love that I was able to wear heels at the party last night and actually forget I was wearing them, because they did not pinch or hurt a bit!

Good News, Bad News
mistysj replied to brwneyedwoman's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Bypass has a reputation for being faster, but I don't think it is based on modern data. The sleeve was made to have more capacity at first. The sleeve is now 15% of original capacity and u have seen data showing similar speeds of loss. So it's more like two different types of jet plane now. Also, if you need to take meds for your kidneys later, they may not be as effective after bypass, because of the malabsorption. The same goes for some pain medications. I would weight my decision I'm favor of the nephrologist rather than the GP on this one. Know that either way you go, you are likely to have a similar outcome in the long term, as far as weight loss.
