To eat or not to eat
mistysj replied to kellymoon122013's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
http://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/292198-staple-foods-for-puree-phase-2/ You can also find lots of recipes by using the search function to search for Purée in the Recipe Sharing section. Yep it's fine and expected to use some liquid foods on the purée phase. By the way, the crackers are not technically purée unless you are throwing the Soup in the blender with them. You probably don't need them anyway. -
Paranoid about inside staples!
mistysj replied to nesa83's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
6 weeks and you are completely healed according to my surgeon. -
If drinks are too sweet just water them down. I drank a lot of half strength juice and Gatorade.

You are only two pounds over overweight. Almost all the health benefits of losing weight come from moving from obese into overweight and the rest is just cosmetic. So you are basically there. If you like how you look and you are having to work really hard to keep losing, call goal. If you are still finding it easy to lose and you'd like to try to lose more, maybe to give yourself a "bounce range", why not? If weight is still coming off and if it was me, I'd probably go with it, as long as I was happy with how I was feeling and looking. You have already arrived, for health purposes. The rest is up to you. Congratulations!

All of my December sleevers...
mistysj replied to blkdiamond377's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I hope you all don't mind but I think this thread should be in the December 2012(!) Sleevers forum. Am I right? If so, happy sleeve-a-versary to you all! -
It is hard to beat the protein in cottage cheese. 12 grams in a 100 gram serving (about 1/2 cup I think). Even for low-fat or fat-free. And you feel quite satisfied afterward.

Any late January 2014 Surgeries Scheduled?
mistysj replied to alexisny's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
There is a whole group already: http://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/289466-january-2014-sleevers/ -
They are scars. You can't get rid of them. I bet they were there already but were stretched and now your skin is more loose because you have lost some weight so they are more obvious. You can get expensive creams and gels that probably don't work or you can just take care of your skin by keeping it in good shape and drinking your water and getting your vitamins. As you lose weight the stretch marks will fade and not be very noticeable. How many people see your stomach anyway? If they saw mine at 7+ months out they might want to claw their eyes out.

Can you get the isopure shakes? They are clear protein in fruit flavors and ready to drink. Some people say they go down easily and it would be doubling as protein and fluid. They are a bit expensive but it may be worth it for a couple of weeks.

Weight loss question...
mistysj replied to kledislynn's mommy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have lost several ring sizes and even my feet have gone down 1.5 sizes! Oh and necklaces hang lower. For reference I have gone from a 20w pants to a 12, same for dresses. 2xl to medium top. 44DD to 32D bra. And I expect to lose a few more sizes still. -
Any therapy that gets your BMI down into an overweight or even better, healthy range, will improve your PCOS. PCOS is made much worse by the hormones that are stored in and produced by abdominal fat (visceral fat). Also by losing fat, you will become less insulin resistant. If you have more than 17 BMI points to lose to get to healthy BMI, the conventional wisdom used to be that you should get RNY. Thinking seems to be shifting now that there are more studies on the sleeve that show 10+ years of data, which shows comparable rates of weight loss with the sleeve as with RNY. Also, for diabetes, RNY is known to send insulin-resistant type 2 diabetes into remission, quite often immediately after the surgery. Well, this happens with the sleeve too. It happened to me and with some other people on these forums. Who knows if my diabetes will stay away for the long term, but I'm happy to say it has been gone for more than 7 months now. The RNY is also a great surgery and is the right surgery for many people. But take your advice from your surgeon, not the insurance coordinator.

I'd be concerned they would crunch down to nothing and not give you a full feeling. In other words, a potential slider food. Just something to be aware of and don't go overboard.

Nobody? Oh well. I picked up a small jar of the Musashi with the 30g protein and 170 calories and it tastes fine to me if a bit thin. I will probably just stick to it and try to jazz it up with flavors or adding fruit sometimes.

Great Article On Low-Carb/high Fat Diets
mistysj replied to gamergirl's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm almost finished with GCBC finally. It is my goal to finish it in 2013. I feel like I am finally to the good part now and I am in the last 1/3! -
Tried soft foods... Totally bummed
mistysj replied to Jessica108's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Lots of sauces or low fat gravy for things like ground beef and shredded chicken really helps. I don't think we realized how much we used to wash things down with water or other beverages if they were dry. -
For the Taco Bell cravings stir some taco seasoning and some taco sauce (not salsa -- no lumps) into chicken broth!

We don't like the same things so we each order our own. I tend to choose something small and pack half of it up for later. Or I eat the best bits and leave the boring stuff.
-
Sorry for the confusion, feedyoureye. I have never attempted 5:2 (I'm not at a year out and I'm not having trouble losing yet). I was just responding to the feeling like a failure bit.

Almost Passout Everytime I stand
mistysj replied to healthbound1's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Low blood sugar is below 3 mmol/l. 5.8 is great if you are diabetic or have eaten recently, a tiny bit high if you aren't and you haven't eaten within two hours. -
Almost Passout Everytime I stand
mistysj replied to healthbound1's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
If it was that, it wouldn't be only when standing and it would likely be showing up in other ways such as general disorientation or irritability or lack of concentration. Much more likely low blood pressure due to lack of sodium in the diet and possibly low fluids too. Probably it will normalize with time. -

Try having some salty food a couple times a day. -
When you are on fluids, all fluids count as Water, even your Protein shakes and the liquid part of your runny oatmeal. You can have broth too and it counts as a liquid. Fluids are more important than protein at this point. You won't starve but you could well end up back at the hospital with dehydration. Sip just a tiny trickle of water several times in a row over 20 minutes and you will get down a cup. It is boring but you will get it done without much pain. If your chest hurts you are swallowing too much at once. Just enough to wet your tongue at first and work up. Hang in there. You will feel like a different person in just a few days.

2014 weight loss commercials.........bye bye!
mistysj replied to Beach Lover's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I agree. I keep realizing I don't have to put "lose weight and exercise" on the resolution list this year. Of course I still have weight to lose and I will still exercise but I feel in control of it for once. I feel bad because I don't think those programs work for many people long-term. If they did they would go out of business. But what else can you do when you have 20 or less pounds to lose. I don't know what to recommend to people when they ask. Because I don't believe in the simple calories in/out equation anymore. The only thing I know is what worked for me: gain the weight of an extra person, try for 20 years to lose it, and finally succeed with bariatric surgery. -
I don't know the answer but you shouldn't feel like a failure if it doesn't work for you. We got tricked for years by blaming ourselves instead of the diets. You can always speak to your doctor or set up a consult with a nutritionist to get advice. Not everyone on this site who is successful has done 5:2.

I got told at Christmas that I was "hot" and "sexy" by several people. A little creepy and weird, but gratifying too. Also I feel mean but I really notice when people are bigger than me now. Lots of family members are! I think gaining weight has turned into the new normal and I am finally bucking the trend!
