I learned of this online when it was not done in the USA. I found Dr. Kuri by reading chat rooms for weight loss, particularly the band. I knew exactly what to expect and how to arrange everything. I spoke to him by phone and within two weeks had the band.
I went through a lot to get it. It was my last hope. I was sick of being fat and hiding, and treated like a nothing. I had no support from my husband or sister or parents or any friends, so went myself with an undiagnosed fractured hip. I rode the trolley in San Diego and crossed the border and caught a taxi.
I never really had pain from the surgery except the shoulder gas pain for a week afterward.
I lost 78 pounds from my high of 217. I was 205 the day of surgery. We didn't have to go on any special diets at that time before surgery.
I had liposuction and a tummy tuck about a year after the surgery, and wore a size 8 jeans and six slacks. I've never worn that size before. It was magical. Dr. Kuri had to tell me to get smaller clothes because I continued to dress in baggy clothes for a long time. I am larged boned...my wrist circumference is 6 1/4 inches. So I was really small for me. I knew I wouldn't stay there, and in several years was up to size 10 jeans. I've been holding at size 12 for 6 1/2 years now. I'm fine at that.
I have other health issues that rule out any exercise for me. I have Pulmonary Hypertension, so I get short of oxygen with any exertion and must wear it at night. This started in 2006. I also have 2 hip replacements and a very bad back that I have been seeing specialists about and getting injections and other procedures. I have 5 pinched nerves in my disks and degenerating disease. So I'm very happy to maintain at this average weight. I just think of how much worse my back would be with the old excess weight. I'm very grateful for my band. I'm maintaining my fill at 2cc in a 4cc band.
