    College Students and the Band

Hey, whats up, i am a student at university of ottawa in canada. I'm 3 weeks out of surgery. Going into 3rd year next year, I know how you feel, about the eating in public thing....i think that as fat people, we think that people are watching everything we eat. I know that i always look at what others eat and i judge people, (i feel like an asshole) Anyways, yeah, i always thought if i would eat well, but then if somebody would see me eat some junk food they would snark and be like, no wonder he's fat...whatever, i think it might be true to some degree, but on my 10 day pre-op diet i thought for sure i'll have to become a lie master (not sure about telling my friends yet). But guess what...not 1 time did anyone ask about my eating changes. I guess people don't really put it high on their list of important things to know, lol its silly now that i think of it, but it's not because i REALLY thought it would be a big issue. I am having mixed feelings about the alcohol, i am for sure not drinking beer anymore, 1. It has a LOT of extra crap, carbs calories....2. Carbonation, not good for the band. I might be tempted to have a low carbonation beer in the summer one day, something like a corona or something, but it will be in a long time. 3. Hard liquor is probably the best bet for drinking, although alcohol still has calories, the more alcohol dense, the better. 4. there is the issue of casual drinking and getting shitfaced...if thats the plan, might not be too good, throwing up is bad for the band, slippage is not fun. I think it's going to be weird not drinking, but my health is more important, plus alcohol is not that great for you in big quantities. (low doses have proven beneficial health effects) But drinking too much...no. So yeah, Hope it helps you somewhat. if you have a questions send me a private message or post on this thread or something. Good luck

    Getting pissed off

It's not even for fills, im only 3 weeks out, but i have questions. But when i do get my fill, i will make sure to call them to confirm. So when you guys call, do you reach a person or just the DAMN voicemail. If so, what time of the day do you call...whats the secret.

    Pre-op

Hey Marcar, yeah, preop is a bitch...Worst 2 weeks ever. I cracked, not first day mind you but yeah, I had pickles and a sliver of pizza (separate days) (after spending the whole day in front of GOOD food at my aunts and holding back) all in all, it wasnt a big amount of each, and for another clinic pickles are allowed, although not for mine, but anyways, thats not THAT bad, but yeah surgery went well, i lost weight preop so i guess its a success. All i can say is hang in there, and trust me we all know how extremely hard preop is. Dont worry, but also don't cave...i understand the urge, i was there, but you have to fight it. Get back on that horse.

    Pus from scar

I bent down fast today, and i felt a weird feeling, a bit like if my stitch was tearing, but it didnt, and now there is a bit of pus coming out of my scar area. What should i do?? Tlbc is just voicemail....do i leave a message, or would they only get it on monday, do i send email, do i go to ER(seems drastic). It is on my right side, and its one of the smaller scars, and it definitely didnt rip. My scars are pretty healed, i think its past the point where they would rip anyways.
  6. Yeah, i agree.....i will be taking it easy on the fluids from now on. I thank you all for the encouragement and advice.

    Where to get banded

Well...i've been obese class3...probably the last 2 years...before, still very big..so i've tried a lot of things to change that...nothing worked. obviously if you get to this point its because you are done with all the other crap. This year is the first year that my Blood pressure is considered high...I don't EVER want to have to take meds for diabetes (which i probably wouldve had by 25), Hypertension (few years).....I was heading down a bad path, this was what i saw...i was actually just one day thinking...i should get a surgery, looked up RNY...found this, and decided RNY was not what i wanted. Lap band seemed like a good solution, so yeah, my parents have been more or less suportive, my mom understands, my dad is the person who thinks i can still turn it around myself...but anyways, yeah...thats it.

    Where to get banded

Hey, I chose the place because after seeing this forum, i realised what was important in a banding centre. At first i had a consult (in person) at the toronto cosmetic clinic. Then came on here, figured i might as well get another consult on the same day so i wasnt wasting my time travelling to toronto. Looked like TLBC was a good one, so i chose it...i still didnt really have too much info. So anyways, i fill out the forms for the TLBC consult (which they could do over the phone, which was great!) And they needed forms filled out, info and such, whereas toronto cosmetic clinic didnt require anything, and wouldnt do a consult over the phone. I slowly realised that tcc wasnt the best choice because they didnt seem to be as organised and specialised like TLBC. It wouldve been nice to go to the consult in person i think, but its ok. So yeah, i dont know much about SWLC (Dr. C/Dr. Mumford) I didnt do a consult...plus theyre farther away for me...so..whatever, but i'm sure theyre great and people who have gone liked them i think. But anyways, one week out, i feel really good, I was out walking yesterday...took me a few days before i wanted to walk but its better now. I'm glad i did it so far, because i now feel like there is an end to the weight issue that has been plaguing me now for the last 10 years (half my life). I'm sure i'll be more happy i did it once i start eating regular food again. I TOTALLY know what you mean about not being able to eat lots, i think its normal, i think thats our addiction to food...i know i was addicted to food, i'm happy to read many posts that once you start feeling satisfied with food, and not always have to feel full your perspective changes...but i'm not there yet. Yeah, i'm doing good...i lost a lot in the pre-op diet...now THAT is a hurdle. *also to compare the 2 best places in toronto, at the TLBC the pre-op diet is cottage cheese(i hate it) and yogurt, whereas the SWLC is opti-fast (I THINK, not 100% sure) which is pretty expensive, like i think it will run you 400$ for the pre-op diet. Whereas my yogurt for the 10 days probly cost me under 100$. But yeah...Read lots of posts, if there was a counter that said how long i was on here just reading posts taking it all in....i'd have a lot stacked up. Also....dont just read the good stuff...its great to check out the before and after section, but also go in the complications sections, see what can happen. I'm still a newbie in all this, so i still have more questions than answers but hopefully it was helpfull.

    Where to get banded

Jane, I envy you....i didnt have a surgeon in my city(ottawa)...I had to go to toronto. And same as yoda, i went to TLBC. I was banded a week ago today. It was good, i liked it...but do your research for yourself, and ask people what they thought of it. There are 3 doctors known for this in toronto, Dr. Cobourn/Dr. Mumford (Surgical Weight loss centre), Dr. Yau TLBC, and Dr. Tin(toronto cosmetic clinic). Toronto cosmetic clinic doesnt have anyone on this board....so i dunno bout them, i had a consult with them, but then never did it because the more i researched the more i didnt like them. They dont talk about pre-op diet in any of their info, no one on this board really knows them...etc. Ask people who went there what they thought. But i'd ask the people who have more experience, aka been for many fills, dealt with them in case of complications etc.
  14. Umm....im on full Fluid, and i can drink a can of soup....is this bad? I am also starting to be able to drink more....should i REALLY be super hardcore about sips or is it ok...I'm worried....i dont want to be like...on well i feel fine so it must be fine...But thats kind of what im going through. But really...i'm young, so i'm guessing my stomach healed quickly, like yesterday i was out and walked a good 2Kms no biggie...i'm feeling pretty much 100% and im 1 week out of surgery. I mean, it is only liquids, and the operation shouldnt have an effect on liquids should it? All it does is make the stomach smaller for food...but liquids are liquids...they go down easy no matter how small the hole...right? I don't know...You can't stretch your pouch on liquids can you? I have talked to another bander who is my age and he says he can get liquids down just like before...it's only the food thats not (which is what i'm hoping...its the point of the operation) And he's lost over 100lbs....so to me that means something. I'm throwing a lot of questions out there...sorry. I'm sure everything is fine....i'll stop worrying. IMO--as for the weight gain....i wouldnt be worried, i mean, you werent drinking enough calories and such in the Water and Clear Liquids stage...so i'm sure it's your body fighting you now to take back everything you lost...just like the yo-yo diets. But now that you'll start consistantly getting enough calories, just much less than pre-band. You should start losing again.

    MAY 4th

Yeah, so....did you shower yet?? I'm waiting for after today. 3 days (saturday, sunday monday) But does friday count? Like i started day 2 diet stuff clear liquids on saturday...so i don't know. I really want to take these things off...but is it better to wait until tomorow? Also....GOD demerol is SOOOOOOOOOOOOO gross i took few of them simply because of the taste. And the feeling of nausea. I dont understand why they tell us we have to crush meds and give us a gross medication....why not find something in liquid form.

    MAY 4th

Yeah, and just pointing out...i'm a guy and i'm 19...so my metabolism is faster (not as much as my skinny roomate who takes weight gain protein..2500 calories per serving...GOD I HATE THAT) Try and tell me my metabolism is high and i'll laugh. But in all seriousness guys lose weight easier than girls, and the age factor goes the same way. And yeah, comparing weight is the easiest way to get discouraged so dont...trust me i'm not ready for before and after photos yet...i dont see a difference..i've still got a good 100 lbs to lose.
