LB surgery for my unhappy tean daughter?
joe7777 replied to ducky's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Yeah, i have lived that, i AM living that i'm only 1 month out of surgery. Thats why i hate when i see something that could help others the same as it will hopefully help me be shot down. (I do agree that it is not an overnight decision, but if the decision to get it done is made, then i say go for it). I weighed 320ish BMI 44....not healthy. I am 19, so time won't be good to me if i don't change -

unborn babies and slaves...hmmm....not out of context??? That is not a representative analogy sorry i'm not some pushover that will fall for your lame arguments. -
I'm reading Fast food Nation. It's really interesting, I like those kind of books, and it's a motion picture but i haven't seen it. It's all about fast 'food', fast food manufacturing, marketing...etc. It's a really good read. Also i haven't started, but it's next on my list. I bought Mindless Eating (after seing it on 20/20) it looks really interesting, they show why people eat more, in what circumstances (ex: in a wider glass even professional bartenders put more liquid than in a skinny glass) As you can see both books about food, so i think everybody here would benefit from them. Fast food nation gets my thumbs up and Mindless eating looks really good..but like ive said i only skimmed through it. If you have any questions about these books i'll try to answer them to the best of my ability

Grossly out of context. It's like trying to convince taking psych drugs are bad because of the holocost....oh wait there are already crazy nutjobs doing that. -

Ummm....is a foetus a person? (rhetorical) Lets not get into this bible quoting stuff, or religious stuff. Your arguments are cyclical. False logic is the groundworks of catholocism. The bible is true because it is the word of God. God exists and is the only god because it says so in the bible. Hmmm...Spot the faulty logic in that one, its like playing where's waldo and hes the only one on the page. Then if you WANT to quote the bible, there is another topic where someone gave a quote IN the bible that someone is not a person or doesnt have a soul until they take a breath. (also that is the legal definition). So there is the fact that the bible itself disagrees, then if you still think the bible is a literral book i suggest you read the infamous letter to Dr. Laura (if you have not already) Urban Legends Reference Pages: Politics (Letter to Dr. Laura) Have a good laugh, i know i did: I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself? Then if you say that it shouldn't be taken literally...then what do you base yourself on. I am still not saying if i think i think it ok to have an abortion, i'm saying its ok to leave someone the CHOICE. -

This is for every time ive heard a stupid ignorant american comment about our money being monopoly money, blablabla...well first of all...most countries have coloured money, it's a better system. Second, our money is one of the safest in the world against counterfit. -
Hey, its 12:54 april 24th 2006....i should be studying exams but i'm here doing my journal! I will start with what i did before getting into this, since i don't have much to say about the pre-op diet (i started 1 hour ago...its a 10 day diet consisting of yogurt and cottage cheese) So....around march i started thinking out of the blue...I need help, i've tried everything, I don't even know what clicked but all of a sudden i felt the urge to look up everything on the RNY gastric bypass. While i was researching that i found info on the Lap-band...which led me here. I was looking for forums where real people were discussing real issues. I started out just talking about it with my parents, they were ok about it but quickly warmed up to the idea. My mom did research and found someone in Toronto. This was the TCC (toronto cosmetic clinic) So i booked a consult in person for late may. I was searching the forum and found out no one really knew them and their reputation was not established, and their post-op care didn't add up. I opted for the TLBC (Toronto laparascopic band centre). Where i could do a phone consult which i booked for april 5th... Filled out the forms, did the consult, set the date....May 4th 2007. I spent countless hours on LBT researching, viewing threads, looking at before and after pics, reading horror stories about the complications. Now comes the real test...10 days, pre-op diet! I will keep you (if anyone is actually reading) posted!

My 2 cents...i will probably not look at this thread again so write whatever you want. Also i might be repeating something someone has said because i just skipped to the last page to add this. If you don't want one (abortion)...don't get one. If you want one it's you choice. Also...Pro-choice doesnt mean pro abortion...it means pro-CHOICE. -
LB surgery for my unhappy tean daughter?
joe7777 replied to ducky's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
alright...i read some of the ones after i quoted...and it seems some people have said the same thing as my first point. About the daughter and mother being the ones to decide. Also, i agree with WABB...THANK YOU, for supporting me...i love the myth myth myth...lol. People have a thought...and won't let it go...even my parents sometimes. If people in this day and age still think cold weather causes colds....it's unbelievable but they do....imagine trying to get into it with hormones, metabolism, it goes in one ear and out the other. Oh and one last thing, i think i was reffered to as a SHE...i am in fact a HE...but hey, there was no way of knowing that so i don't take offence. -

I am happy at some of the clarifications you made about your position, although i still disagree. I also understand what you mean about writing something vs saying it...it may come off the wrong way. That being said...i would like to adress these 2 comments. I think you may have misconstrued what i have said as well...the i know all there is to know bit. If you look at my statement i wrote KNOW (capital letters) to emphasize that i took classes in health and wellness, nutrition, physical activity, metabolism and i know technically (i wrote all...but its a hyperbole for a lot) a lot of things about diet, exercise and obesity. One of my professors is a metabolism specialist, he does work with the US army for metabolism in cold climates...I digress. I wasnt talking about knowing everything in the world...just on this particular subject which is my field of interest (although meeting me i am a 'know it all'). As per being immature...maturity is relative. I am mature. I dont care what my age says, i dont want to get into the...some adults are more immature than kids routine...but it's absolutely true. I am also struggling with the long term planning and medically shooting dice thing...I might not be good at long term planning but what effect does that have on my health? The whole, longer it waits the harder it gets is exactly why i think teenagers should get banded...albeit not forcibly. They should want to...heck, at 19 or 17 or 16...there was never a time where i felt full...thats what i hope the band will provide me. I was ready when i was ready, and i think that comes at the time it comes for everyone. If i wouldve known about this a year ago i would probably weigh 70-100lbs less...and wouldnt have gained whatever weight i gained last year. I don't know if i wouldve done it...but now i wish i had found out about it earlier and done it earlier. this is for the person who started this thread: 1. The only answer as to if your daughter is ready for a lap-band can come from her&you. YOU need to know if she's ready, and she needs to know if she's ready. It HAS to be the two of you that think so..because in this matter, you may know more about her than she does. 2. As per having it done, it works...there is a younger bandster on this board i believe had it done at 15 or something like that and had great results. 3. It may be a bit early...but again referring to the first point i made, only you know. If you suspect you may be ready for your daughter you may still want to do a medically supervised diet and exercise program...not because your insurance wants to or whatever, but to see if it works. I have in the past been involved in a great program. I had trainers a nutritionist...i was doing well...but then little things changed, and i got a bit off course, then a lot off course, then dropped it. Thats what we do...we didnt get fat because we wanted to. I honestly think if i didnt do anything short of surgery the only way i could lose weight is if i hired a person to follow me around and tell me i couldnt eat. Thats what the band does, its that person that follows you telling you you cant eat anyomore once youve had a reasonable serving, and it's that motivator to get you exercising...because losing weight is great and i know when i started on my program...i couldnt stand it...but when you see results then you start liking it. -
wow...so awesome! You rock Dr. C

i dont really measure and do it scientifically...i just add it to juice, water...etc. on the label it tells you that one tablespoon is about 25% of daily recommended or something like that...so depends how it goes.

tanderson is right, the reason it feels like that is because it is referred pain, it is because of your nerves...kind of like how amputees feel the phantom limb.

1. Get a fill...feel some restriction 2. Finish Finals (why do i subject myself to summer classes) 3. Lose 2 pounds before fill It's funny you say get a tat...i was thinking about getting one myself...One that had a meaning, something that represents my weight loss journey, as well as my passion for medicine and health...probably a rod of asklepios. (the stick with the snake around it)...I'm not sure...i will probably wait till i lose some weight first.

i am 19...had it done a month ago.
Theres a ton of threads...search ''any younger bandsters'' or ''college bandsters'' or something like that...we're out there, it just looks like we're not

Diet pills: I don't believe that none work

Diet pills: I don't believe that none work
joe7777 replied to Sunta's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I have never tried any pills...i think they are garbage. But before you jump on me...listen to what i have to say. I think the infomercial pills, the magic stuff like you said...thats total crap. I think many of the herbal stuff...thats also BS, they are not proven. You might tell yourself well it says scientifically proven and such...WELL...(this is for weight lifting supplements...the kind of things that say its scientifically proven to boost bulk etc. but it still applies) My University nutrition teacher, who has a doctorate, has once showed us an advertisement showing look here's the claim...ok, now you can call these companies to get them to send you their research. So they tell her, ok it is in this article, etc. So now, she takes a good look at it. Basically ALL their research is crap. Non sufficient numbers in the test group, no control group....in other words the research is not scientific. This is the same claims that these pills have and i'm sure if you had someone check these out, theyre bullshit. As per medicine, i think some of them might work, but not for long term, and they usually have pretty mean side effects. The future in the drug weight loss industry may be promising, such as the molecules that inhibit grehlin (hunger hormone), promote leptin (satiety hormone), drugs that block cannabis receptors etc....but for now...the only proven successfull weight loss is surgery. In 5 year comparisons, surgery is the way to go. -
LB surgery for my unhappy tean daughter?

Ok...reggoddess i can appreciate your point of view but i do not agree. Being a fat teenager (19) and knowing some...its not something most people grow out of...read the stats. Something along the lines of 90% of teens that are obese become obese adults. (i dont know the stat right now but ive heard it a million times before). On top of that genetics is not a guess, its pretty much an accepted theory (along with other factors, it explains obesity in some). I am a health science student, i have university classes in health and wellness, nutrition, physical activity, metabolism etc...i KNOW all there is to know, people literally tell me that i shouldnt be as fat as i am..theyre like, you are in better shape than me it doesnt make sense (not kidding ive been told that) and i weighed 320 at 5'11''.

Also, why are you banded...you basically have the attitude of a non-bander preaching to a bander ex: ''Small McDonald's fries instead of a large McDonald's fries is NOT the answer!!! Having a cup of ice cream instead of 2 cups of ice cream is NOT the answer. DROP the BAD foods and replace them with GOOD foods.'' WTF is this...honestly....i wont even go there.

if anything getting this done early is probably going to avoid me getting diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea etc. I did this because i think that without it i wouldnt be able to lose the weight i need to to feel healthy and good about myself. BUT i have tried before, like i was saying, losing weight is the EASIEST THING IN THE WORLD TO DO....on paper. Eat less excercise, wow aren't i a genius for figuring that one out.

But in honesty i think that to answer to the main question is...if you child is not ready for it, it might be better to wait. My parents had talked to me about doing some form of surgery earlier...i was weird about it and said no and brushed it off...but then eventually i went to them. I did my own research, i found this site, i was emotionnally ready. Also, i have lived through 2 years university now, i am in a stable place and i really don't know if your daughter would be there yet...who knows. It is a judgement call on your part. As per your husband, i dont know what to say, i guess there will always be those people who dont agree...one thing i would suggest is to make him watch the PBS documentary called FAT: what no one is telling you. Just do a search and a link for it should pop up. It pretty much dispells the fat myths.

There, i said what i said, i look forward to reading your comments Also, i agree with everything jetlagjane said in her post, that pretty much sums up my position.
