    port location

Mine is located midway between incisions on my right side. The port is at least three inches from any incision point. How the heck the surgeon got it there, I have NO idea, and I probably don't want to know!

    Diet Coke

Could be the sodium in the soda causing water retention. I can put on a few pounds just by sipping ice tea all day! Only diet soda I'll touch is Waist Watchers--sodium free, no aspartame (sp?) sweeter, and a few other advantages over regular diet sodas... but I usually let it go flat and sip it before I drink.

Is this the green zone ?

How are you able to eat enough protein, and other nutrients, being that tight?? In my opinion, which isn't worth much, if you lost four pounds in a week by food restriction, without doing a lot of exercise, I'd want to discuss the issue with my WL doctor.

    Aetna

Did they always have a clause requiring a co-morbidity, such as sleep apnea? Something doesn't add up here. You were eligible before coming pregnant, and afterwards you have given birth, and I sure the weight hasn't gone down from where it was when you first applied. I think you need to call Aetna and to speak to someone who handles the bariatric surgery approvals.

    Smoking prior to surgery

If you can stop for a day, you can stop for two days... if you stop for a week, one more week will be easier... get by a month, and then hold your course for the second... before you know it the addiction and habit will pass. Congratulations on taking the first step.

    Smoking prior to surgery

A second vote for Welbutrin!! My doctor gave me a script for it over 12 years ago, and within two weeks of taking that drug the urge to smoke ceased, and one night when I was out of cigarettes I was able to quit. It was an off-label use for that drug back then--but for me it was very effective. But, if you only have two weeks to surgery I would give the drug a try, but don't smoke between now and the surgery date!
  7. Maybe he was scared about you having to have elective surgery... and that was his way of showing his fear? Now that you have had the surgery, his fears are gone and he can be supportive and show his true emotions

    FAIL!

I gained after surgery, it happens! It took the third fill before I was getting a sense of being satiated with small portions of food. Eating protein first at meals helps.
  9. It depends on your band and your metabolism! I lost 15 pounds on the presurgery diet, but I also put it all back on, and a bit more, post surgery. After my third fill I started feeling satiated after eating the recommended amount of Protein at each meal. What really started losing the pounds was seriously watching protein and portion intake, and doing daily exercise. Don't be discouraged if things don't happen fast. For some folks the pounds fall off with no fills. Others, like me, can take three or four visits to start experiencing getting near the green zone. Just don't lose faith and keep to the plan your doctor advises you to follow and you will do fine!

Dr. Robert Powell - RUN AWAY!!!

I don' think food is entirely the blame. My total cholesterol has been under 130 for the past 12 years. It was over 260 before I started eating right. But diet alone isn't going to shed pounds for those of us who are genetically prone to weight gain I can only lose weight when I exercise DAILY, and that means either an hour at the gym or a good two hour daily walk with the dog. Even cutting to under 1200 calories at best will hold my weight. I sure hope they can find a cure a for this disease, and for many people it is a disease or eating disorder. No one should have to undergo WLS in the future. And I hope the public perception of our problem improves.

Dr. Robert Powell - RUN AWAY!!!

Don't blame the band for a poor surgeon! May of the horror stories I read on these forums I honestly believe are due to poor surgeons, and the fault of the band itself. I am sure there are exceptions, but I honestly believe that selecting a surgeon and practice that offers any WLS surgery should be undertaken as being one of the most serious long term decisions you will make in your lifetime. I am so sorry to hear of your terrible journey with the band, and I hope you have success with the revision surgery.

    Lap Band Misinformation

It sounds like she believes the band isn't working since she hit a weight plateau, and for some reason thinks having the sleeve will help her achieve her goals after giving birth. The underlying question is always whether the person is following the diet, or if they visiting the doctor for the required checkups.

    Protein

That is what I was told... protein first, since it is what helps make you feel satiated and holds off hunger between meals. Also, having enough protein helps to protect muscle mass from being used to fuel your body.

To Weigh or Not to Weigh

If you take a shower, and dry off, I bet you will see at least a 1 pound gain from the water that is being held in your skin.... eating, drinking, etc. will affect your short term weight variances. That's why I like to do it first thing in the morning to lessen the effects of outside influences. And a good digital scale is a must! We were using old mechanical scales that never gave the same weight twice in a row
  15. I think you are doing great! The important thing is that you keep following the dietitians advice concerning Protein and portion intake. Do you feel satisfied after eating, with no late night urges for carb munchies? I GAINED weight after surgery... I didn't start losing until after my third fill. And, I also joined a "no judgement" gym for cardio. A lot of folks lose weight quickly, then hit slow periods with little or no weight loss. Too much fill can lead to weight gain and some unhealthy side effects if there is too much restriction. My APRN (who does the fills) told me he is happy to see a 1/4 pound a week weight loss. I've lost a total of 33 pounds since my December 2012 surgery. I wish I was doing as great as you are!

    Hoping insurance covers this

Wow, you lost 110 pounds on your own!!! That is great!! Insurance is usually based on BMI and co-morbidity issues... being on a CPAP would be a co-morbidity issue, and along with a high BMI hopefully your insurance will indeed cover it! Easy enough to call them and check; and they may have requirements for following a two to six month supervised diet program, and pysch evaluation, before approving surgery. Most of that stuff is handled by the WLS surgeon's office. Good luck to you!

    New guy here!

Just a bit of advice, based on my own limited experience... Give the band some time to work for you!! I was banded in December, and for me the pre surgery diet lost a lot of weight fast, but it came back after I was banded... if you see a slight gain, don't be discouraged. It can take some time to get the right amount of fill. When you reach that point you will know it. You will be satisfied eating a lot less food at each meal, and the need for late night munchies (carbs) will subside! Good luck to you!

To Weigh or Not to Weigh

I weigh myself at least twice a day, when I get up, and when I go to bed. I also log the weight in FitDay... and I log every calorie that I eat. That way I know exactly how much Protein I've eaten. Regarding weight, I watch for new "lows." Day to day weight will vary, but seeing a steady downward trend is the goal. It can take several days to see a real pattern, so patience is the key. Every so often I'll see a new pound go away, then come back for a few days, and then finally it is gone for good and I am heading for the next step downward. Everyone does it differently. I've seen too much variance in the doctor's office to use that as a reliable indicator. One visit showed a ten pound loss that occurred because I was at a high the first time, and an unusual low the second. He was six pounds off, and I had to fight for the fill.
  19. That sucks! Having family support is very important... he is being a jerk. The only good thing is that this proves you are doing the lap band for YOURSELF, and that is the most important thing. Too many people do the band because of outside influences. Hang in their, your significant other will come around when he sees the positive changes the band will bring you!

    Salon/barber chairs & weight limit

I know the barber shop chairs in my barber's shop can easily handle over 300 pounds. Do the ladie's salons use smaller chairs? Commercial grade chairs should be designed to handle all clients. My worse experience was breaking a wood chair in my eye doctor's office It has happened to all of us, so don't let it stop you from living!!!

Share ideas, What did you eat today ?

Breakfast: low fat yogurt with cup of blueberries about 200 calories Lunch: 1/2 can green beans, one frozen flounder fillet 270 calories Supper: 1/2 can green beans, one frozen halibut fillet, 1/2 crab cake 400 calories Cheats: low fat homemade tarter sauce, chipote dressing (sp?) for the fish and crab cakes. I'm not sure if it was coincidence, but since I gone over to fish instead of chicken or red meat for the protein, my weight has been falling off.

    Yogurt suggestions....

We look for the low fat Yogurts, they run around 100 to 130 calories per container, with high Protein content. I usually go for the blueberry, and add a cup of frozen blueberries to get the extra nutrients since I don't eat many fruits or veggies. Even with the blueberries the total calorie count is under 200.
  23. Banded 12/3/2012.... really only started to lose weight after my third fill. Since then I've lost 32 pounds in several weeks-- diet and exercise!
