Band/Plication Revision to Bypass at 61
mrsto replied to mrsto's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Thanks Diane! When did you have it done? Although I know that everyone is different, I'm interested to hear about your recovery time and differences from the band; eating, foods, issues, etc. -
Band/Plication Revision to Bypass at 61
mrsto replied to mrsto's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Notinks, I totally agree on all counts.....thank you. I do believe that the band will have to come out at some point, and I would like to do a revision before I gain ALL of my weight back. Though a bypass is the only revision I would consider, there is something about it that scares me. The sleeve scares me even more and it completely out of the question. I think the idea of changing my plumbing freaks me out a bit and I don't know what to expect. I'm self employed, and if there are any complications, I couldn't put work on hold for anymore than two weeks; I would lose my clients! Although, I work from my home office and could rest when necessary. That in itself is a blessing! -
Band/Plication Revision to Bypass at 61
mrsto replied to mrsto's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Thanks so much. At 49 it wouldn't have been a question in my mind, but things change when we age and major surgery can be more of an issue. I had no hesitation whatsoever when deciding on my band/plication 4 years ago. I was actually scheduled for a bypass, but chickened out two weeks before my surgery date. Now I wish I'd gone through with it. But as they say, if hindsight was foresight, we would all be rich, retired and livin' the life Thanks again. -
I'm considering a revision from a lapband/plication to a bypass. Did your surgeon do the revision at the same time he removed the band? Are you happy so far?

I'm a little late to this post, but I haven't been on the site in quite some time. My cousin had the issue you are concerned with.......her intestines wrapped and got tangled. She was very sick for a long time, but once they discovered it and she had surgery to repair, she was fine. Thanks for replying! What kind of symptoms did she have? Is she doing well now? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App I haven't talked to her in a few years. She lives far from me and is actually a cousin through marriage. Anyway.....as I recall, she was very sick, but I don't remember the specifics. But I DO remember that it ended up being the very issue you're concerned about. There is a lot to consider when choosing WLS. I'm agonizing over it myself, because I'm considering a band/plication revision to bypass. I don't know if I will go through with it, but I'm reaching out to everyone I know, including coming back on this site, to get all the info I can. I'm 61 and don't know if putting myself through it is a good choice. Then again, blowing up again and having all the weight related health issues isn't a great thing either!

Need band & plication revision to Gastric bypass self pay...who do you recommend in California?
mrsto replied to Muñekita's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hopefully insurance will cover it. My doctor seems to think so, but I haven't gone through the process. If insurance doesn't cover it, I'm not having it. That is a cost/debt I won't take on at this point. -
I just saw my doctor today and discussed having my band/plication revised to a bypass. Same reason I see in many revision posts.....due to horrible reflux. I had my band/plication done in March 2013 and did very well for about a year and a half. I've put back about 30 of the 70 pounds I lost, and I'm nervous that I'm actually considering going through another surgery. My band has been empty for about 6 weeks and I'm also nervous that I will gain all my weight back. I haven't been on this site for a long time, but thought I would login to hear from and about others that have done this particular revision. My doc said that he would remove the band and do the bypass at the same time. I've read various schools of thought on this, but he doesn't seem to think it's an issue. Also, more simple when dealing with insurance.

Need band & plication revision to Gastric bypass self pay...who do you recommend in California?
mrsto replied to Muñekita's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I'm in SoCal and actually discussed a band/plication revision to a bypass with my surgeon today. My doctor is Helmuth Billy in Ventura. He is great! I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet, but after close to 4 years, I'm having horrible reflux issues and I've gained back close to 30 of the 70 pounds I lost. I don't know what he charges for self pay, but I can tell you that he's a great surgeon. Here is the link to his website http://www.drbillybariatrics.com Good luck! -

FYI, the band is not temporary. It is permanent, but there is the option of removal....if any issues occur.. -
Worried about dumping syndrome with gastric bypass....advice...thoughts?
mrsto replied to lanaml2015's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I was scheduled for bypass surgery, but freaked out and canceled two weeks prior. I was also afraid; not only about dumping, but the whole malabsorption thing. I've known a couple of women who were Iron deficient and needed IV infusion every day for a long time. That doesn't happen to everyone, but it was enough to sway me in less invasive direction. -
I had left shoulder pain for a good two weeks; maybe more. The best thing you can do is walk around, but it just has to run its course....however long that is. Even now, more than two years post op, I'll get left shoulder pain if I eat too much, too fast.

I took it years ago and it worked as a diuretic. I would think it might help with Water weight? I don't know.....everyone is so different. If you are doing everything you're supposed to be doing food wise, then this is temporary and the weight will come off. It's hard to see it on the scale, though, so maybe.....stay off the scale until after your period? Just a suggestion :-)

I had mine out at the time of surgery. I had small stones that weren't bothersome, but my surgeon felt that it would only be a matter of time before it had to come out.

When my band is too tight I get terrible reflux. But you should call your doctor and let him/her know what is going on.

I totally agree. If you invite someone to do your hike & they can't keep up, suck it up for a day and slow down. It's one day, and you don't have to hike with that person again. Your MIL does sound spunky, which is fine. But there is no reason on earth to humiliate someone who is clearly laboring. It's just uncalled for. Years back, when I had lost close to 100 pounds, I became a hiking freak. I took my sister to the canyon one day, and she was not able to keep up. So I slowed down and stopped with her when she needed to stop. No big deal. People cannot (should not) expect that someone who is clearly "working on" fitness, can necessarily keep up. No need to rub it in their face to make yourself shine.

Amen! I have a wonderful husband, who has been supportive since day one. Though he does not have the "fat issue", he does have about 20 pounds he plays with. When he decides to lose weight, it drops off like nothing. I can't fault him for that because it's a physiological fact that men lose weight quicker than women. They don't have NEARLY the fat cells that we do, and have a higher volume of muscle mass. I gave up comparing years ago. It is frustrating, but it's simply of fact of life.

How to forgive someone?
mrsto replied to My Bariatric Life's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I get it I agree that forgiveness releases the pain and energy of hate, at the same time, haven't quite figured out how to let go of certain things. If someone intentionally kills your child or love one, how on earth do you forgive that? I know that some are able to, but I guess I'm just not that Enlightened. But that is a whole lot of anger to carry, and I think I'd have to find religion or some other place to lay it down. I don't know.......this is a hard one -

How to forgive someone?
mrsto replied to My Bariatric Life's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
@@My Bariatric Life - It feels to me that the ongoing hurt is a little of both; forgiving him, and not completely forgiving yourself. Aside from that, whatever caused this disruption in your relationship is unfortunate. I think that's a piece of it too. No matter how Enlightened we become as seekers of a better life (all facets), we're still human. Sometimes, it's just hard to let go. If he isn't willing to reengage with you, back off, even though you have the best of intentions. His perception of the event is different than yours, and you have to let it be. It will take time for the hurt from this to fade a bit. If the relationship is meant to be, you will reconnect at some point in time. -
How to forgive someone?
mrsto replied to My Bariatric Life's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Depending on "who, what, where, why", I may forgive, but I NEVER forget. There are so many variables as to circumstances, so I don't think there is a defined answer; only what feels best for you with that particular person. Though I have a deep capacity to understand someones background, and what may drive them to do and say the things they do, it doesn't mean that I have to stick around a toxic environment. I can understand; maybe have a little compassion. But that doesn't mean that I need to be around it. It all depends who the person is to you; were they in a bad place for a period of time, or is this simply the way they are? You have to trust your gut and perception. As the old saying goes.... "Hurt me once, shame on you. Hurt me twice, shame on me". -
Totally off topic, just need somewhere to share

Congrats on your huge weight loss success. Well done! My knee jerk reaction to "life with your husband", is that it's time to kick him to the curb and move on with your life. But I also know, that is easier said than done. From your picture, you look pretty young. What do you see in your life ahead with your husband? Is that a place you'd like to be in 5-10-15-20 years from now? With all of the tumult, is your love for him greater than having the life you deserve? Maybe right now you can't afford to leave, but staying with a long term human drain, can you really afford to stay? I agree with shellyd88 above, to take control of other aspects of your life; maybe go back to school and learn a trade so you can ultimately support yourself. It's amazing how a window opens; opportunities seem to appear when we remove ourselves from toxic environments. You've already proved your strength by having WLS and dropping 135 lbs. That is AWESOME! What I wish for you, is that step is the first toward strengthening yourself to go after that which is your right to have. Believe me, what you're in doesn't need to be that way. You cannot change your husband.....no mater how much you care for him. But you can change your situation, and claim a better life. I wish you all the best...... -
RiskyGirl - the only time I actually feel the band, is when I've done something that causes swelling. Then I do feel a tight....almost pinching feeling, that can take 2-3 days to resolve.

Oh the wrath! I had my share of pain & suffering last night. It's amazing, how after so many months, I can still go brain dead and forget that I have the band. Today, back to the bare bone basics
