In 2008, I started over 300 lbs. I had a Lap band, lost over 150 lbs., then I developed serious esophagus issues, had to remove all the fluid for a long time. After my esophagus healed, I revised to sleeve (band removed and sleeve surgery all in one) and basically maintained the weight loss from the band. A few years later, I developed severe Gerd and burning esophagus. No PPIs worked anymore. It was progressively getting worse.
Between the lapband then to the VSG, I maintained the majority of my weight loss. I attribute some of my success to tracking and logging my food from the beginning. It helps me keep accountable. I will track for life.
In August 2021, I revised to RNY due to Gerd/esophagitis issues. It is wonderful not to have severe Gerd. I am sleeping well now, and had the added surprise of losing weight. I was told revision patients do not usually lose much weight but I just wanted to fix the gerd. I had put it off for years because I was afraid it was too drastic. Looking back, how silly of me to feel that way about the RNY. I was content at my current weight before the revision so the added weight loss was a nice surprise. My appetite is more suppressed than it was after my VSG, and I am now under goal weight. I understand everybody is different. Since my revision to bypass, I have had zero issues. It has been wonderful so far. Physically, I feel the same as with the sleeve but without all the side effects. I feel normal, a healthy normal, for once. I had a new learning curve on how to eat after the revision which took about 6 months to really understand full vs not, hungry vs head hunger. For the most part, it is very similar to the VSG. I have been able to tolerate all foods with no issues. No dumping, no vitamin deficiencies... Etc.
