  1. Congratulations on finding what works for you. I eat a more balanced diet...which includes carbs but that's the good thing about this band. Find what works for you and let the band help you be successful....which for me means 74 lbs. lost since starting this journey on December 31st.
  2. Every doctor seems to have different instructions post-op. I would check with your doctor and/or nutritionist regarding what you can or can't eat. Good luck...you're doing great so far.

    Consultation tomorrow

Hi Watchers. I just saw this now and I'm sure you've already had your consultation so you know that it was just jitters and you had nothing to worry about.

    Consultation tomorrow

I was also banded at NYU...Dr. Ren-Fielding was my surgeon. Don't be nervous...all he'll do is talk t you about the surgery and likely try to get a sense of why you are overweight. I was asked that and gave an honest answer....I ate too much. The doctor told me that she had lots of people who couldn't even admit that and as long as I know why I'm heavy, I should do well. She was right...I had the surgery in mid January and I'm down 73 lbs. Good luck, all will go well.

I have lost 73 lbs. and only once felt 'restriction'. What you should feel is satiety rather than hunger. And you shouldn't feel full. If you do, you ate too much.

    January 2013 Bandsters Unite

Oh that's funny...I was just thinking a few days ago how everyone was doing. That's a great weight loss kca. Keep it up. I'm doing fine as well in that I've lost 73 lbs. since being banded on January 14th. Now down to 194 lbs. and most importantly, I'm now eligible for the full knee replacement surgery I need. My dr. said he expected it would take a year for me to reach this goal and I did it in half the time. I'm hoping for the replacement in September or October and then I can 'gowalking'....lol!

    Really, some people are ignorant

Yeah...I live in NYC and this guy was teaching at NYU so it made the local news a while ago. It just shows that it's still OK to hate fat people when it's not OK to hate people who don't have your skin color, religion, sexual orientation, etc. It's the last prejudice that is still tolerated. I hope he had to talk to HR after this to learn to be more tolerant. If he had said no African-Americans because they aren't smart enough to do a dissertation, he would have been fired...or forced to apologize since he was a visiting professor and probably not on the NYU payroll..

    Head hunger

Most of us are emotional eaters...which is why we are in the fix we're in. Is it possible that because you did well at Disney, you somehow feel entitled to cheat now that you are home? In other words, are you 'rewarding' yourself for doing well by eating not so well now? I don't mean to try to analyze you but even you think this is head hunger. Sometimes head hunger is just boredom, but sometimes it's much more complicated than that. I think that for everyone who does well in a challenging situation and feels empowered, there are those who do well in a challenging situation and then promptly sabotage their success. Again, this might not apply to you at all and you might think I'm talking out my a**. I'm just putting it out there and if I'm totally off base, apologies to you.

    I am 50

Understanding satiety I think is the key. If I'm doing anything right, it's that. And your weight loss is absolutely wonderful. Too many people are too hard on themselves or have unrealistic expectations. All that does is set us up for failure.

    3 weeks post op...

Hi Chloe. Stept is being kind but I'm gonna tell you the truth. You are not going to lose another 23 lbs. in a month. That's nearly six lbs. a week and it's totally unrealistic. All the data states that weight loss should be between 1-2 lbs. a week. Don't set unrealistic expectations because otherwise you will feel like a failure when you are not. You've lost 7 lbs. in three weeks. That's fantastic. If you can lose another 4-8 by the middle of August, that will be great and more importantly...it's very do-able.

    Just banded July 18 2013

So sorry your recovery is difficult. It will get better though and this pain will become a distant memory. What alarms me more than your physical issues is the hubby. I know he means well, but he's inadvertently trying to sabotage you. Sit him down and have a serious conversation with him so he understands how to support you properly. Otherwise, you will give in and make bad choices when you are having a bad day, or feeling low and then you will feel even worse for not following the program. Good luck and wishing you much success on your weight loss journey.

    I am 50

Hey Steph...I'm going to be 55 next month and want to lose around 120 lbs. I've lost 73 already and have done no exercise at all because of the severe arthritis. I go into the pool three days a week but it's to try to move and strengthen the knee, not to burn calories. I've no idea why I'm so successful...I'm not doing anything different than anyone else who's following the rules. I thought the same thing as you....how long would it take to lose the weight at my age and without exercising. I'm just grateful that it has come off so quickly...I need a full knee replacement and wasn't able to have the surgery till I lost a significant amount of weight. I met that goal a couple of weeks ago and will have the surgery in the fall I hope. How are you doing? I see from your ticker that you are down 18 lbs. That's pretty good considering you had surgery fairly recently.

Please tell your doctor and nutritionist about your experience. This is not what you should be going through. Food stucks should be rare, not common. You could be doing damage. You should not be eating till it hurts. I never feel restriction and have had great success with the band so far. Again...speak with your doctor immediately.

    Why the Lapband?

Agree completely with CG and Ceres. This will work as long as you understand it's not a easy fix and you will still battle head hunger and will still have to make the decision to not overeat or graze. All the band does is give you a feeling of satiety for longer periods of time and if you listen to that satiety, you can make better choices. But they are choices and if you don't listen to the band, you won't be successful. And one more really big thing...forget about feeling full. If you do this right, you never feel full. But you can be not hungry..and that's the goal.
  22. gowalking

    A light bulb moment

that's it step. congrats..you likely had the breakthrough that will allow you to succeed.
  23. gowalking

    did I do damage?

Call the doctor. Don't mess around especially with your history. You can bleed out and you know it. Better safe than sorry.
  24. Here's my take on it. We've failed at every other weight loss attempt and that's why we're taking the step of WLS. I suspect you fear that you will fail this as well. Why can't we do it on our own? Because we are addicted to food and turn to it for all or many of our emotional needs. We do not eat to live, we live to eat. For many of us, the band is the tool that we need to help us make the right choices and keep to the band size protions. This is not the easy way out so don't think you've already failed because you can't do it on your own. Plenty of people screw this up to by not eating smart so don't think of this as the easy way out...it isn't. As far as making the right choice, if you are really not sure about doing this than don't. You may not be ready. Most folks are scared as you are, but are also ready to commit to this new lifestyle. Do some soul searching and decide if you are just nervous or if you really are not ready to do this. Then make your decision based on what your heart is telling you. Good luck whatever the future holds for you.

    Just banded on July 17...

That's alot on your plate, but you are right..you had surgery and must take it easy until you are feeling ready to get back into the swing of things. If you push it and overdo, you'll be no good to anyone.
