    I'm alive

Hi all. Both hips replaced on October 8th and I'm still alive and kicking. lots of PT ahead and lots of recuperating to do but at least the surgery is over. Lots of swelling so I'm not even bothering to weigh myself. I bet I have ten lbs. of water weight alone just looking at how swollen my legs/hips are. Doing as well as can be expected and very happy to report that since the hip surgery, My knees feel better. Will keep you all posted. Liz
  2. There's usually some medical reason for the decision. In my case, I have mobility issues due to joint degeneration and the doctor and I felt it would be better to stay overnight so I could get the blood thinner shots along with the boots that pump air on your legs to keep the blood flowing. I also had assistance getting in and out of bed along with supervised walks. Most people can walk without issue but I felt more comfortable walking with a nurse at my side. Plus I wound up having low blood oxygen issues...which were just monitored and I was fine the next day. Again...it's a decision made based on medical need and most folks are fine as outpatients who go home the same day of surgery.

    Changing habits

Well..you have to remember, if we could change our habits pre band, we wouldn't need to be banded in the first place. I'm not advocating you doing what I did, this is just my experience but I ate like there was no tomorrow before starting the pre-op diet. I figured I'd never be able to eat to excess again so I ate that way for weeks. But...and this is a big but....once I started the pre-op diet, I followed it to a T. and post op, I did the same. As I started to get back to regular foods, I still followed the rules by eating slow, and small bites and chewing to a pulp. During this process, I was able to realize that by doing that, I could feel satiety enough to eat band sized portions and not overeat. Also...because I am no longer ravenous, I find I can make good choices with my food as well as eating smaller portions. What I'm trying to say is that while it is good that you are trying to be compliant before getting the band, it's a lot more important to be compliant just before and then after you are banded. Good luck and wishing you well on your journey.

    Ugh i over ate!

well, just chalk this up to a learning experience. I saw four words that said it all. "I decided to snack'. You made a choice and now you know it's not worth it to make that same choice in the future. good luck on your journey!
  5. As many of you know, I am getting ready for a bi-lateral hip replacement. With surgery less that a week away, I am off the NSAIDS and between that and an RA like flare, I have been on mandatory bed rest for more than a week. A good friend heard that I went out to get some fruit and had lots of pain afterwards so sure enough, she sent me a beautiful fruit basket and told me not to go out again..lol. Well, there were lots of other goodies in that basket besides the fruit. Cookies, crackers, chocolate, jam, cheese, nuts, etc. I took out all that stuff and put it aside. My sister came by yesterday to keep me company and do some errands and I packed all those items up before she came by so that she could take it all with her. It wasn't because I was tempted, I just knew if it stayed in my house, it would just go to waste. I don't keep anything like ice cream or cookies, or candy around. This way, no temptation and no waste of money either. I'm just amazed at how easy it was to make that choice to get those items out of the house. No going back and forth..should I, shouldn't I...it was easy peasy. Boy do I hope this is a reflection of what is to come. If yes, well then that's my success story and not the weight loss. Have a happy one everybody!
  6. All you are feeling is perfectly normal. Even the no more bingeing part. There is a sort of grief process for food as we used to know it. That too will pass...especially as you see positive things happening. I can tell you with complete certainty after 9 months that losing this weight feels so much better than eating to excess ever felt. and the fact that I do ot binge or overeat makes me feel empowered and in control. Again...a much better feeling than the pleasure of overeating. Hang in there...you will see what I mean soon enough. Welcom to the other side!

    at the movies

bring better choices with you. SF hard candy, nuts, fruit. This way, while others are eating popcorn and candy, you can munch on much better stuff.

    Banded-Day 6

This too shall pass. I'm not trying to be flip, I'm just saying what you are going through is very common. As your body heals, your mood will improve and this will all just be a bad memory. Hang in there and welcome to the other side.

    Port Pain

oh my goodness. suck it up buttercup?? for real?? I'd get another dr. asap. a*****e, piece of crap. I so hope you get the care you deserve. damn doctors...some of them have no business doing this for a living. You should put his name on the forum so people know to stay away from this guy. Please keep us posted and let us know how you are doing.

    Average weight loss

posts like yours make me nervous. don't focus on the scale. you are very early on in your journey and like Missy says, what you're losing right now is water. eat correctly, exercise, and the rest will take care of itself. pay attention to how clothes fit, how much better you feel (less joint pain/more energy) and all those other small changes that will show up all the time...fitting into a booth without issues, not worrying about sitting in a chair with arms, all kinds of things like that. good luck to you and remember...you didn't gain in overnight, and you won't lose it that way either.

Anyone take Lisinopril for high BP?

not a good idea to stop taking your meds sol. call the doctor and check with him/her first before stopping. some meds cannot be stopped immediately and must be titrated off. lisinopril might not be one of them, but again, the doctor can confirm this.

    NIGHT TIME HUNGER :(

once I finish dinner, I go into my bedroom. it is my food free zone and even though the kitchen is only down the hall, it makes a difference from a psychological perspective. I find that I think about food more when I am in the living room rather than the bedroom. I realize this only works if you have no children to care for but it's something maybe worth trying. good luck.

Anyone take Lisinopril for high BP?

Hi sol. i take lisinopril 20 mgs. daily and have not had any issues. I also work in the pharmaceutical industry and strongly suggest you discuss any possible adverse event with your doctor to determine if you should change medications. good luck.
  19. ahhhgghhh!!! please please please stay away from the scale. Missy said it nice and I agree with her 100%. don't weigh yourself more than once a month. the scale is a number and you don't need to get on it much as long as you are following the rules. the weight will take care of itself if do what you are supposed to.
  20. so sorry about your dog. they really do become beloved members of the family and losing them is very difficult. sending you hugs.

    5 years later...

Good luck Natasha. My stats are similar to yours. I'm 5'1" and was 267 before the preop diet. Even at my current weight of 176 1/2, I'm still considered obese, but that's just from a medical perspective. I don't worry about whether or not I can fit in a chair, I can fit into a booth at restaurants, flying is no longer the fearful thing it used to be. I can put down the armrest and the tray with no problem any more. I don't worry about getting looks of horror from the person who has to sit next to me. In a nutshell, I feel normal again and that's such a great feeling. You will feel that way too. Keep us posted on your journey and your success.

    Sushi?

If you are on 'regular' food, you should be able to try it. Also..since you are not eating the rice, try the sashimi. That's just the sliced fish. You can cut the fish as small as you like and not worry about the rice or seaweed wrap..which can sometimes make you take too large a piece. If you don't dip the fish into the soy sauce, it's very low in calories and sodium. If you want the soy sauce, cut it with water and use the low sodium to help minimize the water weight. Enjoy!
