WHAT!!! I exercised 4x last week and gained 5 pounds! I hate this!
Terry Poperszky replied to OldMomOf3's topic in Fitness & Exercise
First off, did you get fatter or did you get heavier? Two totally different things. The fact that your muscles are sore, means you worked them and they retain water during the healing process. Happens to me all the time, Now, you bumped your eating up to 1600, yet you list your height at 5.1 and a BMI of 31.2 which would give you a (BMR) basal metabolic rate of 1518 calories a day. What that means is that your normal 1400 calories a day, you are only running a 115 calorie deficit, and since a pound of fat is 3500 calories you will lose a little over a pound a month. When you bumped it to 1600 you are probably eating more calories than you are burning. But, once again, your WEIGHT gain is not fat, it is Fluid retention. I'm not being judgmental, I am simply doing the math. I am nearly a foot taller than you, and my BMR is 2500, and I only eat 1300 calories, and about half of my exercise calories (3 hours of spin class a day, plus biking when the weather permits) and I still stall on weight loss. I lost the same 2 pounds about 5 times during the month of March. As for hunger, according to your profile you have been banded since June 2012, I would suggest going back to your Dr. and discussing it with them or seeing a NUT. Keep the faith, you will eventually get where you want to be. -
Off to meet with the Nutritionist
Terry Poperszky replied to pkchop's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I attended a class taught by the surgeon's lapband nurse and given contact information for the NUT if I had any questions. I emailed her once, she promptly answered my questions and haven't needed to talk to her since. -
Best of luck.

Think that might have something to do with it? Since you lost your insurance, you need to replace her with some other sort of accountability mechanism. Revisit the basic, start measuring, start logging, start counting calories. Just my humble opinion

Marriage problems??
Terry Poperszky replied to sparkles502's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Not having any problems, but if I may make some suggestions from someone with a failed marriage and a successful one. As you lose weight with your band, you are going to uncover things on your body that the fat covered up, for instance I have ribs now, and my wife was commenting on how she could see the muscles in my legs. The same thing is going to happen with your relationships. The weight loss is going to uncover insecurities and problems that you didn't realize were there. So, instead of being scared of the studies, be WARNED by the studies, open lines of communication, talk to each other about your fears, your hopes and your needs. If you need counseling, get it earlier rather than later. Find out why he is insecure, while this may seem all about you, it really isn't. It is all about both of you. You are seeking to change a constant in your relationship, that may have your partner nervous for a variety of reason, but you need to work on this just like you work on your band. JMHO -
Dylan, you have lost 75 pounds, don't you dare use the word failure! Guys, I have been on a plateau for about a month, and just started a downward trend again. During that month, I did not once come near to what my BMR says I need to maintain my weight, but my body just needed a rest. Just keep listening to your Dr. and doing the things you know you are supposed to be doing and things will start moving forward again.

Should I skip the next fill?
Terry Poperszky replied to labwalker's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Restriction shouldn't be your only guide, satiety should be a major factor. I skipped my last one, even through I was plateaued because I thought I was on the loose side of the green zone and wanted time to adjust. I go back in next week and may or may not get a tweak. -
Yup normal for me. My Dr. told me to get used to protein shakes because I would be drinking them for breakfast the rest of my life. 90% of his staff, including his nurse are banded, and they all start their day that way. I have a shake first thing, and then mid morning I am able to eat eggs.

How do you decide?
Terry Poperszky replied to tess1964's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I got to the point where I couldn't exercise enough, and I couldn't follow weight watchers anymore. I worked my butt off all summer to stay in the low 280's, when fall came and I couldn't bike anymore I went up to 299 by Christmas. I swore to myself that I would never see a 3 in front of my weight again so I knew I had to do something. I started looking at WLS, I compared average weight loss with average complications and decided on the band. While the weight loss for bands is lower than the more drastic surgeries, the band complication and mortality rates are only a fraction of what RNY and VGS are. I looked around for a surgeon, found one with over 900 procedures under his belt and a complication rate that was less than the national average. I have tried every diet and every diet drug on the market, and always gained it back. Today, after a little over three months, I weigh less than I have since I was a freshman in High School, and I am well on my way to achieving my weight loss goal. -

Need some nutrition help with working out
Terry Poperszky replied to hely88's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Try it and see what happens. I have better success with Protein over fat and carbs. But I really wouldn't over think this, unless you are doing long, hard sessions you probably won't have to do anything special -
First Fill: Roll on next Friday
Terry Poperszky replied to Kai-shek's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My first fill was quite small, only 1cc. But for me I felt better after each fill but they would wear off as my swelling from the fill went down. The closer I got to restriction, the longer the fill lasted. I currently am in the loose side of the green zone with 5.7cc in a 10cc band, and have chosen to stop here. -

Yup, you are and he bad news is that it is unlikely that the first fill will give you restriction. Possible, but not likely. Good news is you will get there. -
Need some nutrition help with working out
Terry Poperszky replied to hely88's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I have been playing with this going into a strenuous workout empty, and the using protein afterwards and I totally destroys me for the day. My best results have been light protein before, and then heavier protein after. -
But I just did 17 miles at 14.9 Mph. Not bad for the second ride of the season. Oh, Catfish. My wife looked at your picture and said that you may ride farther, but I look better in spandex.

As I was waiting line at the Drive Up window of my combined KFC/Taco Bell. I noticed their 360 Calorie meal, and thought about trying it. Then I noticed the fine print at the bottom of the sign 1500 mg of sodium. The American heart association recommends a max 1000 mg per 1000 calories, with a maximum of 2000 mg per day. Instead I settled for my usual Fresco Steak Taco and Water. Just a reminder to be aware of what you are really eating.

Afraid of success...
Terry Poperszky commented on Terry Poperszky's blog entry in Terry Poperszky's Blog
On my left arm I have the scripture John 6:66-69 tattooed as a reminder when being a Christian is really hard, in the end it is the only game in town so I might as well keep moving forward. I think that I am coming to a similar mindset with the band. I have made my decision, and one day I might fail, but today is not that day. -
I attended support group last night, and then read CG's post this morning on want power has me thinking... There is want, and then there is WANT. The problem is that we want it all, and society had told us, that we not only CAN have it, we DESERVE it. Ever seen a fad diet advertised "East want you want, and still loose weight"? The band for all it's power, doesn't replace our wants, at the most it mutes some of them. I have had a rough couple of days, I hit a new low weight and immediately my head hunger took over and I tried to eat everything in sight. Well, I don't have to worry about that new low weight now. No, I didn't really gain, just excess fluid from jumping my sodium intake. But the point is there is a part of me that glories in my success wants to continue, and there is a part of me that is terrified of it and wants to go back to the old lifestyle. Right now, I want to succeed, but the fear is that the greater the success the more terrible will be the tragedy of my eventual failure. Yes, I know this is not a productive thought process, but as we all know the band only works on your stomach, not your head.

I wonder if they have band friendly food in Narnia?
Terry Poperszky posted a blog entry in Terry Poperszky's Blog
Because that is where I am spending my day. My daughter's middle school is having a Narnia celebration and I have volunteered to be a photographer. I think I will hide some jerky in my camera bag, I hope Aslan doesn't mind. My daughter and I ready for a day in Narnia. -

How does the band stay on?
Terry Poperszky replied to Bandashoop's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Super glue and staples. My Dr. sews it to the stomach wall, then wraps more stomach around it and sews that in place, the does a partial plication to stiffen the stomach wall to keep it from slipping through. -
