Kime, couldn't agree more, I am the child of two adult alcoholics, I am 20 times more likely than the average person walking down the street to be addicted to something, but alcohol and recreational drugs have never been a problem, food has always been my drug of choice. I firmly believe that the pleasure centers of my brain light up like a pinball machine when I eat, just like a junkie shooting heroin into his arm. But I also believe that want/will power don't stop at just what I put in my mouth, they encompass using every tool at my disposal to try and beat this addiction, even pulling out old college text books, attending support groups and following the rules the Dr. gave me. Don't give up, don't give in, keep fighting!

IMHO, as a former teenage boy, I can tell you that you have no idea how they feel

Well, compared to the "Big Likelihood of dying from a heart attack if I remain fat, or the big likelihood of major complications from from the VS or GB, the band is a walk in the park. The problem is Steph you made an assumption in your question. That assumption is that there is "a big likely hood of having to have a revision or it just plan removed" when there is simply no hard data to support that. Are there risks? Yup, are the risks much less than other forms of WLS? Yup. Would I do it again in a heartbeat? Yup. I have nothing against other forms of WLS, but they simply aren't for me. I am willing to take the band, with it's track record of lower, slower loss and fewer complications over the higher loss rate and higher complication rate of the other WLS.

How do you celebrate?
Terry Poperszky replied to ZinniaMT's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Depends on the what the victory is...but clothes are a big part for me. I hate to look dumpy, wearing oversize clothes, so as soon as I shrink enough, I buy the next size down clothes. Exercise victories seem to be their own reward and I am able to do more and more, although I have a wager with my wife that when I do my 100 mile bike ride (Century), I get a new grill. When we made the bet, I was thinking next year, but there is a good chance that I will get it done before riding season is over this year. It may seem expensive but, even with the clothes and the grill, it is a net savings based on how much less we are eating out. -
I don't get it.

One of the hardest lessons of my life was to stop worrying about other people and concentrate on my own actions. I am not being critical of what you said, only sharing what I have learned. One thought for you is that most of us here are not the most emotionally stable people in the world as evidenced by our eating issues, so is it any wonder that that those issues don't go away when we are banded? -
The sleeve is the new fad, and once the data is in, it will show the same problem as GB, stretching the stomach/pouch out, and the patients gaining the weight back, just like patients who eat past the band. I think there will always be a place for the band, people who don't want to mutilate their intestinal tract.

Try something else. I am tired of my scale plateau, so on Missy's recommendation I am going to try carb cycling for a week or so to try and break it. So Missy if it doesn't work, I am holding you personally responsible

Dang right, first day of the cycle is low carb, low calorie. I am not a happy camper right now -
What does your trainer have to say? What does the measuring tape have to say?

What are refried beans? How do i prepare?
Terry Poperszky replied to hockeymother's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
White people can't use google??? Here is how my mother taught me how to make them... Take a bunch of dried pinto Beans, soak them over night and discard the Water afterwards. Put in fresh water, several cloves of garlic and a hunk of Salt Pork in the kettle and simmer the beans for several hours until tender. Remove the salt pork, let the water simmer down until it is below the top of the beans, Mash about 30% of the beans with a potato masher and cook until nice and thick. She would add a pound of sharp cheddar for Frijoles con Queso, but I simply put a little shredded cheese on for flavor. BTW, not sure how authentic this is, although I was raised in an Hispanic area, you may have noticed "Poperszky" is not normally recognized as being "South of the border" in origin. -

Once you have tasted home made refrtios frijoles (Refried beans for you white people), you will never eat them from a can again. -
MyFitnessPal Calories vs. Net Calories?
Terry Poperszky replied to TheCurvyMermaid's topic in Fitness & Exercise
According to a BMR calculator on the web, you have a BMR of about 2300, that is the amount of calories per day that it takes to sustain your weight, apart from exercise. A pound of fat is around 3500 calories, so if you eat 1300 calories a day, you will lose roughly 2 pounds a week. Eat more lose less, eat less you will lose more, eat the same and exercise more, you will lose more eat more and exercise more, you will lose the same. This is an extremely simplistic, but mostly accurate view of weight loss. Of course it doesn't take into account the stinking plateau that I have been on for the last month and a half -
"I still feel like a failure and I should have lost much more by this point." Those words sound soooo familiar, where have I heard them before??? Wait, I know, that is the voice I keep hearing in my own head! You aren't alone. You aren't unique in your feelings. And most importantly, you aren't a failure. Don't know how you feel about the bible, but take a look at 1 Corinthians 10:13

NOT Quite everything you need to know about a Lap Band
Terry Poperszky replied to JACKIEO85's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
She uses the same logic in her arguments as the birthers: "Some people think that Barak Obama's birth certificate is a forgery, all I can say is I wan't there in he hospital when he was born." Spread a rumor, and then confess your inability to confirm or deny the rumor. "A: Some people think the companies that make Lap-Bands haven’t done the studies because they are concerned that the results won’t be good for sales. All we can say is that the companies haven’t published any studies, and the companies say that they have not done the studies." -

I went to my LB support group last and the subject was Plateaus and and one of the comments is that sometimes a plateau will turn into an avalanche of weight gain. Now there is absolutely no logic in the world to the thought process that say "I'm not loosing, so I will gain weight instead", yet, I totally, totally have done that, as have many of the others on this forum. It is similar to the logic that we use that says, "I failed at one meal, so I might as well blow the whole day and eat like a pig". That is like saying, I made a mistake in my checkbook and I am 10.00 overdrawn, so I am might as well go out and buy a new TV! I walked away from the support group with reminded that much of what we are doing in our journey revolves around our mind, rather than around our stomach....Now if only there was a band for our brain BTW, I met a nice lady there who recognized me from the forums, but forgot to ask her user name.

Stupid things fat people do...

Sharpie, food, drugs, alcohol different tools, but the same addiction. -
My fills would "wear off" I would feel something at first, but that would soon go away as my swelling would go down. As I got closer to the green zone, they would last longer. The last two haven't worn off at all.

Feeling like a failure and need to vent
Terry Poperszky replied to ireallywannabthin's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
One question, are you logging every thing you are eating? Don't bother answering since you are one of my MFP friends and I just looked  In my life not logging something is a form of secret eating, If I don't log it, I didn't really eat it. Could this be a problem for you as well? I know how badly it hurts to be honest with yourself and put down in black and white that you ate something you know you shouldn't have, but that is part of the process of being honest with ourselves about why we are fat. I would challenge you for the rest of the month, write down EVERYTHING and see if that helps. -
