Why is everyone converting from band to sleeve?
tegz replied to futureskinnybtch's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had band to sleeve due to some significant complications. Very long story short, my band started to erode my stomach. I struggled with severe reflux unresolved with a number of medications and couldn't sleep lying done due to regurgitation at night and I would often choke in my sleep sleeping upright. My only choice was to get it removed, I required some stomach reconstruction also while I was being sleeved Sent from my SM-G920I using the BariatricPal App -
Isn't this very similar if not the same as dumping syndrome. It happens if you eat to quickly or eat very sweet food. I'm 7 weeks out and have similar symptoms if I have something sweet. It's a very unpleasant feeling. Dumping syndrome can be triggered by different foods for different people, sometimes food that is too dry or to high in fat, but typically it's sweet food eaten to quickly. Has anyone gone from the lapband- sleeve?
tegz posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi everyone just wondering if anyone has gone from the lapband to sleeve surgery, and if they had better results. I currently have the lapband lost 22kg in 18 months ( I need to lose at least another 40 kg). About 8 months ago I was getting terrible reflux and regurgitation at night, my surgeon took some fluid out and said I was probably to tight and have ended up with gastritis. After taking 1 ml out, I felt better but this only lasted 2 weeks and all symptoms of reflux returned. I went back to my dr, he removed another 1 ml and sent me off for a barium. Here I was thinking I had symptoms of a slippage, but the barium showed nothing the band was fine and I had no other issues. After another month my reflux once again returned and I have had most of my fluid removed. My dr said I need to rest it for a little while. That's all well and good, but during that time I have put on 4 kg and feeling terrible and angry myself. I have had nothing but trouble with the band for over 10 months now and getting sick if the constant appointments adjustments, and over all disappointment of not getting anywhere near my goal weight. Has anyone else has similar experiences?, what did you do? And has anyone gone from a failed band to a sleeve with more success. One of the doctors at the clinic I went to said if I wanted to lose weight more quickly why didn't I get the sleeve, if I had know this and was informed at the start I would've gone with a sleeve. But we generally go by what our doctors recommendations. Feeling deflated! -

Thanks heaps, I didn't see that one. -
Hi everyone, I had an adjustment early December which put me up to 10ml in a 14 ml band. Mid January I started waking up in the middle of the night coughing and choking. I let it go as I knew I had another appointment early feb. As it turns out, it's a common sign the band is to tight. I honestly felt like I had good restriction never hungry eating small portions etc. but just the terrible chocking coughing at night. The dr has taken .5 ml out and now I find myself hungry and looking for food. Has anyone else had these issues? And did your doctor do more fills after that event. I'm just worried I'm not going to get as good restriction again, but obviously don't want to be chocking in my sleep. I have had the band for 18 months now and have only lost 46lb. Admittedly for 6 months there I didn't go to the dr for an adjustment during the early stages as I thought I was going fine. Wrong thing to do I know. I have felt a bit flat and lacking energy particularly the last few months. I was going to the gym regularly prior and eating a good balanced meal. But lately, I feel tired no energy and just plan over it. I don't know what to do to get my motivation back.

Hi Luka, I have had .5 ml taken out and all bad symptoms such as reflux and night chocking have stopped. It's lovely to actually get a good nights sleep and not worrying about how many times you will be up in the middle of the night.

Thanks everyone, sounds like I need to up my protein intake. In all honesty, I have never been a meat eater and find it difficult to get enough protein at the best of times. Maybe that will help give me the energy I'm lacking to get myself back off to the gym.

It initially started off as reflux so I made sure not to eat 3 hours prior to bed, cut out a lot if foods that are known to cause reflux. But it persisted, if anything got worse. To the point I was bringing up a mouth full of stomach fluid in my sleep and chocking. Such a scary experience. I even propped myself up on numerous pillows so I wasn't lying flag to help prevent the regurgitation in my sleep.

My story--banded for 9.5 years.
tegz replied to MeganA's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I have been banded for just on a year, I have lost just on 20 kg with the 14cc band. I am quite disappointed with my weight lose so far, although any weight lose is good I understand that. However, I think the band is sometimes sold by doctors as a miracle solution ( well it was to me). I honestly didn't realise that living with the band would mean making so many life changes. I stopped for almost 7 months going back to my surgeon and in that time I regretted my decision of getting the band. Although, with great bandster support I went back to the dr. This time I was completely honest with my dr about my disappointment and the issues I was having. I wish I had done this earlier, we are now back on track and I'm losing. I'm still a slow loser, but its working. and I understand that the band is a tool, it can not do it all alone I need to work with it, I think the point I'm trying to make is it is very. important to communicate openly to your dr, this was something I initially didn't do. And for me it made my journey miserable. I am so happy and finally happy with the band. However, I do appreciate hearing other people's stories good or bad. For those of us that are early on with our journey it is important that we receive this information from previous bandsters, so we know what the potential complications are and what to look out for. I am grateful that you shared your story, as now I know how important it is to communicate openly to my doctor about my concerns and not let things drag on. -
Oh good I'm not the only one. i had my surgery 1 year ago and at the beginning thought it would go away as I healed. But one year on and it still happens. I suppose it's just all part of having a foreign object in the body.

Does anyone else experience episodes of lengthy spasms at the port site? This happens regularly to me, it's not at all painful when it happens more annoying. I also every now and then, mainly when I twist or go from a sit to stand position to quickly get a little pain at the site, almost feels like it is pulling. Does anyone else experience this or am I just weird lol.

What not to say to somebody who is getting a band...
tegz replied to Terry Poperszky's topic in Rants & Raves
At least most of these comments sound positive or people trying in their own way to be supportive. I've lost 18kg since getting my band ( had a few complication along the way, but back on track). It has been almost 12 months since getting my band. My mother in law ( who needs to lose weight herself), still says I look as if I've barely lost anything, and am I sure I've lost anything at all. REALLY..... I know she is doing this to make herself feel better, as everyone else I know has noticed and its obvious as I've gone down a couple dress sizes. But it's so nasty. I like the positive comments, 'your looking great'. 'Keep up the good work' etc, most people are supportive and understanding about the band. I have explained it is a tool, it doesn't do all the work for me but it is something I needed to do to help myself. -
I felt the same way the first few months of having my band. I think you get to a stage where your relationship with food changes. I love food, and I think society has really encouraged our lives to revolve around it. One year later, I now try and think of my banded life as I need food to live, not live for food. I still eat whatever I like, but if all I can have is a mouthful I'm happy with that. I don't look at the plate full and think 'I wish I could finish it all', I'm happy with my taste. Trust me, as you see results your thought process will change. Overtime you will realise I can have that fried rice, but maybe I can only have a little bit. Hope that helps, and keep going. I think we all go through a period where we question 'did we do the right thing?, is the band for me?'. At the end of the day it is reversible if all else fails.

Hi what is the five day pouch reset, is this something your surgeon put you on. Do you have any information that you can post on here to follow?

Omg so I'm not the only one. I'm with you it's so embarrassing. I find soft drink is the worst hence why I rarely drink it now. I have found the tighter my band gets the worse the gurgling. If I have more liquids its worse.

It has taken me over 6 months to get my band filled to a level where I feel like I have the right level of restriction. Just remember it is not a quick process and everyone can be different, so they need to take there time getting it right.
