Various types of protein powders
neveragain replied to jennifernc88's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Okay, here's how it goes: Whey and casein both come from milk. They are the fast acting Proteins that are good for post-workout. Soy is from the soybean plant. It's a slower acting Protein, so it's good for recovery shakes later in the day or before bed. A little note for guys: Soy protein tends to increase estrogen because of the chemical makeup. Hello gynocomastia (man breasts). That's NOT to say stay away from it. It takes a LOT over a period of time to do that, but the estrogen will still rise. A little note for girls: Soy has been proven over and over to be GREAT for pre and post menopausal women. It's been linked to helping prevent cervical cancer among tons of other health benefits. No, I didn't just look this up. You can thank the years I spent working for GNC. lol -
Dr. said "no more protein shakes!?!?"
neveragain replied to bigbaby's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
He's not wrong about that. Shakes are good for protein, but they're not good to keep you full. -
As long as you can mentally see the difference between head hunger and real hunger, you'll notice that it does help a bit.

Post op with many suprises !!!

To you, I say good luck. :cursing: Oh, and you're right. LBT rocks. haha. -
I've had my band for 11 months. Seriously, some of the time I've had it, it was a huge pain in the arse. When I got on the scale and it said 220, I freaked out. I haven't been that weight since middle school... All of the crap that you go through is worth it in the end if you just stick with it and do what you're supposed to. Plain and simple.

Any stomach or intestinal pain or discomfort? Is EVERYTHING that's dairy doing that? If you weren't lactose intolerant before, chances are that you're not, but it's worth looking into. Oh and the probiotic stuff can do that on occasion, especially when you've been on antibiotics for a while. They have a name for that, but I can remember what it is...hmmmmmm

Danger! Wife Nearly Died From Surgery
neveragain replied to tallywag's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Okay, I think this was a post to get some answers out of someone. I actually found the website that he was pulling that info off. It was in the general interest of finding out more about sepsis, mind you. :cursing: I smell a lying *insert your own expletive name for this guy*. -
Truthfully, I had those come and go for a few months, but they ended up going away totally after time. If it keeps up for a few more weeks, go talk to the doctor, but I wouldn't worry about it at the moment.

I'm a lot like you, David. I'm a big fan of the high Protein, low-carb diet. Ignoring the fact that I'm a pre-med student and my dad is a doctor, I learned from reading a medical journal and talking to my dad that that diet is BY FAR the healthiest diet. How do you think they tell the diabetics and heart disease patients to eat? Aaaaaaaaaanyway, I would stick with what you're doing. Stay away from high carb stuff and just do what you can. Seriously, you can't always be perfect, but do your best.

Admittedly, I found it a few years ago and here I am, still on. lol.

medicine/pill question
neveragain replied to zetajenn5's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I would say a SMALL amount of both. It depends on your metabolism, but if at all possible, I would try to steer away from combining the two...only because of the possible respiratory issues... -
I can't really complain about what's been happening over here. I dropped 20lbs over the holidays. Granted, that was because I spent 3 weeks in the hospital, but talk about a great Christmas present to myself, right? hahaha. There are some things that I spent 8 or 9 months learning, but after the last fill right around 2 or 3 months ago, I FINALLY got my head on straight to tell myself that you can't screw this up. See, I've really never been a fan of candy, fried food, and stuff like, so the diet that told me what NOT to eat was never hard. I just used to eat an ungodly amount and that's what did it. Now, I'm spending a fair amount of time in the gym and just eating what I should and how much I should. It's been a great year, guys. Oh, and if you're wondering why I spent 3 weeks in the hospital, 12/20 I wrecked my sportbike. There was two skull fractures, a subdural hematoma and a few contusions. There was a little bit of nerve damage in a couple places, but it wasn't too bad. Needless to say, I'm incredibly happy to be alive.

Can't wait 6 months, I want it NOW!
neveragain replied to rottimom's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
My suggestion would be to start saving money. VERY few insurance companies will approve a BMI of 40 and no co-morbidities. It's starting to become more and more affordable nowadays, but I would also say that as in most things, you get what you pay for. Good luck! -

From a post-operative point of view, you're probably going to be just fine. You would've just had a minimally invasive surgery and you were discharged the same day, generally. You don't need to have anyone stay with you. I would find someone who you could call, though, just in case. -
Honestly, if you be careful about how you do everything, you'll be just fine. If I were you, though, I would steer away from it, but that's me.

Post op Day 6- stomach pain! Is this normal?
neveragain replied to Dandy Andi's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Seeing as though it sounds like the doctor thinks it's acid reflux, I'd keep taking the meds. That would explain the reason that he wants to do the upper GI test. Keeping in mind that the pH of HCl is right around 2 and the meds would pretty much get rid of the discomfort because they are pretty basic. If that doesn't help AT ALL, it could be something else... Do they help at all? -
Seriously, everyone has been there at one point or another. Just keep your goal in mind and you'll do the right thing.

You'll never go back to the 2-3 times a day. If you ask people what they REALLY do, most of the time it's not like that at all. Generally, people go from once a day to once every 2-3 days. You'll probably go for the latter category. Oh, and for the person who said that they already go every 2-3 days, chances are you may add a day or so if it even happens that way. I wouldn't get scared about it. EDIT: Keep in mind that everybody is different, though. Don't slack on the Water and fiber. Both of those are fantastic to promote normal GI movement.

I'd love to get together with some people in Tucson! Send me a PM, too, if you want!

For ANYONE who is scared of the high Protein, low carb diets who has diabetes should look at this post above mine. There has been study after study after study done that says that this is the perfect diet and for people who aren't obese, it's a fantastic lifestyle. They give it to cardiac patients and LOTS of others to make their tests where they should be! On a mildly unrelated note, I'm waiting for my hyperuricemia to go away...oh wait, it's genetic! Ha! Hello chances of gout attacks and kidney stones never going away! Oh, and Gayle, I'm so happy for you!

Do you miss eating?
neveragain replied to sadie11's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
To be honest, most times I like how much I eat now. Don't get me wrong, sometimes I see the rest of the plate and want to push it down that little esophagus that I have. Fact is, having a band helps the food intake and also the way we look at ourselves in the mirror and it seems to help, so lets just get used to this small meal bit and get over the overeating thing. -
Wal-Mart opening up doctors offices in store.
neveragain replied to crazycat's topic in Rants & Raves
Hell no. Never. Do I think it's a good idea for poor, uninsured people? Sure, as long as they don't mind getting everyone in the front of the store sick. -
See, I'm one of the crazy ones... I used to have a big sex drive, but I've lost 70ish pounds and it's gone down quite a bit... To that, friends, I say YARG!
