I'll Show You Mine If You Show Me Yours... Hair Loss.
mwrarr replied to kamrie37's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My sister lost Patches of hair post-WLS, but, now abt 3 years post-op, it's come back & fuller. She used Biotin (10k mcg/day), Fish oil supplements (double doses), her multi (double doses) & a minimum 60g Protein, along with minimum 72oz water/day. My hair is waist-length & thick, but I will follow her "recipe" for sure. I already take 6k mcg biotin daily. I'm not an overly vain person, but I feel like being the fat girl my whole life, my hair is the only selling point I've got! 347*294/285/135 (*347HW/294SSW) -

You're probably better off with Upstate anyway. I guess the Packer (Sayre) recently started doing bariatric surgeries again, & my sister's close friend had RNY there & they totally screwed her. They made her eat a meal before she could be discharged...solids. And now her surgery is basically a waste bc she can eat like a linebacker & has only lost 35# since Spring. Upstate gets really great reviews. If Cayuga wasn't doing surgeries, I would've driven up there. 347*294/285/135 (*347HW/294SSW)

Funny you say that! :} I actually was hoping to become a trauma/er nurse when I was in nsg school' date=' but that's on hiatus now. Glad to hear things are going well! :} seems like I see more horror stories than smooth sailing... My surgeon does EGD on everyone bc they're checking for H.Pylori bacteria, as well as to check anatomy. In my case, it was also to see what the damage was (if any) from my history of GERD & reflux. He was concerned that doing the sleeve (vs RNY) would just exacerbate any heartburn & make the rest of my life miserable if there was a lot of evidence to prove it, but the EGD dr said other than a mild patch of gastritis, it looked really clear & he saw no evidence of current GERD or reflux. I meet with my surgeon on Nov 1st to review all the referral appts' findings, so hopefully he's more willing to do VSG now...! :} 347*294/285/135 (*347HW/294SSW)

Ok...here's mine. I have a total of 212# to lose, already lost 53 & starting the surgery process with 159# to lose to goal. My goals are actual weights, not number of lbs lost... 275#: get a pedicure 259#: find a new chiropractor 244#: get a massage 236#: take the NIA training--FINALLY! 211#: sign up for belly dance classes 199#: trip to Montreal w/my sweety 182#: buy/design a new piece of jewelry .....*this is where it gets tough, bc I haven't been below 182# since 8th grade...... 175#: ? 160#: ? 145#: ? 135#: ? 347*294/285/135 (*347HW/294SSW)

My HW was 347 in 2007' date=' but my SHW (surg high wt) is 294. I'm ~285 now & I'd like to see 275 by surgery but I'm being realistic & as long as I don't regain any, I'll be happy. I don't have a date yet, but my next surgeon's appt to review all the referral appts is Nov 1st, so I'm hoping to have one soon! :} 347*294/285/135 (*347HW/294SSW)

Friends- Can We Really Keep Them?
mwrarr replied to O.T.R. sleever's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
My town has a female competitive roller derby team, & I've been itching to do open try-outs (each November), but I've been too self-conscious to do it. Next November, I'm so going for it. :} 347*294/285/135 (*347HW/294SSW) -
I'll be thinking about you tomorrow' date=' too! I hope everything comes back normal (or at least fixable!) 347*294/285/135 (*347HW/294SSW)

Seems like that's your answer. :} I'm still pre-op myself' date=' but I anticipate having those moments once I get below my lowest adult-weight (236), as I'm sure I'll try to get too comfortable. Sometimes it just helps to get back to square one & start again as if it was a new program all over. You got this! :} 347*294/285/135 (*347HW/294SSW)

Ok...so I just had my monthly NUT appt & it wasn't with my regular. It was with the one who is condescending, contradictory, judgmental & dismissive. I honestly have no idea WHY this woman is working with bariatric patients. I am so annoyed with myself right now that I reset my cardio appt last month. If I hadn't, I'd be waiting for approval notice right now. Ugh. Obviously I'm fat...& have an eating disorder...or else I wouldn't be going through all this nutritional counseling, emotional counseling, fitness counseling & seriously contemplating/awaiting hacking off my stomach! Grrrrz. Mwrarr, indeed. The hypocrisy of WLS is seriously annoying. If I just "starved" myself on 500 cal/day, & lost 120# in a year or so, I'd be anorexic...but let a surgeon permanently alter my stomach so that I can "live" off 500 cal/day & it's healthcare. I honestly don't know what these people want from me. At this point, I'm just jumping their hoops with my mouth shut & waiting out the next appts. Blah. 347*294/285/135 (*347HW/294SSW)

Bad Nut Appt! (Possible Rant)
mwrarr replied to mwrarr's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
She's part of the team at the "healthy living" complex that does the medically supervised WL, which is an offshoot of the hospital. And one of the regular NUTs, just not my normal. I plan on bringing it up with my surgeon when I see him next wk & I will definitely let the other NUT & bariatric surgery coordinator know what happened. Honestly, it felt like being at the DMV or something. My only negative experiences with this whole process have been the 2x I had to meet w/her. I'm feeling less cranky today, though. I know I'm doing the right thing, & that I've put in (& still am putting in) the work & asking myself the hard questions. :} 347*294/285/135 (*347HW/294SSW) -
Bad Nut Appt! (Possible Rant)
mwrarr replied to mwrarr's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgeon & PCP, & the NP & regular NUT team have all been wonderful. This woman is just ...IDK. she looks at me like I'm not doing something right, but I should know what that is by now, but she's not going to be the one to tell me. And her words are just not friendly or even "reality check", but just vague & dismissive. Like shes burned out. Yesterday it was an 8am appt & she started off with "why am *I* seeing YOU, today? You normally see Mxxx, I don't even know your case at all!" To which I replied, "I'm not sure, but I had to get in this month to keep the continuity of appts & this was what was available, I guess." It just spiraled from there. She also said that the surgery wasnt really going to do much & then contradicted almost every post-op dietary guideline that i have been given by my surgeon & regular NUT--including saying that fruits & veggies will always be more important than Protein. What?! She lectured me on not exercising enough (I go to the gym 3x/wk w/my BF, do yoga/pilates 2-3/wk @home & walk at least 25 min/day). I couldn't wait to get out of there. I wanted to cry from frustration. I'll make sure any other appts are with my regular. 347*294/285/135 (*347HW/294SSW) -
This was one of my 1st ?'s lol My surgeon & my NUT both said the issue with gum is more related to swallowing the gum' date=' but straws are def off-limits due to air. Of course, go by what YOUR providers say for you. :} 347*294/285/135 (*347HW/294SSW)

I don't mind the long story...I thoroughly appreciate it. That sounds like about the most horrible thing I can imagine, next to a pleural drain tube... I'm glad you are keeping more down...but also glad they're still gonna take another look. Definitely keep me posted! I'll be sending bright lights! :} 347*294/285/135 (*347HW/294SSW)

Abby...can I ask what kind of complications you had? I try to tell myself that I haven't done enough and that I'm just taking to cowards way out, but then I really do know that I'm not. I need some sort of permanent help. I'm not unhealthy cardiovascularly or any other internal system-wise... (though less wt would make those things even better). it's solely physical--my frame is being destroyed by this amount of mass I'm carrying around... *LeSigh* I wish I'd been born an ectomorph... 347*294/285/135 (*347HW/294SSW)

Helloooo! Another Tioga county alum! :} (i lived in Waverly for 10+ years) Can I ask what made you decide on Upstate? Just curious. I'm only going through Cayuga Med bc that's my "home base" & I figured it'd make it more concise & less travel' date=' etc. 347*294/285/135 (*347HW/294SSW)
