band vs sleeve - how did you decide?
sheky17g replied to aviva1979's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
my surgeon thought that with my comorbid conditions that GB or sleeve was a better option for me. I opted for banding because it sounded far less invasive and was ultimately reversable. I have a young son and a baby on the way and I wanted to get the most effective for the least amount of risk. -
2 months out and I can't even remember where the port is without looking at the incision. It gets better :-)

My First Stuck Food Incident??
sheky17g replied to sheky17g's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Best of luck to you Jenny! How are you finding the liquids phase? I stayed at home for the first few weeks after I was banded. That helped a great deal. -
So, I'm almost 2 months in from surgery and doing well according to my surgeon. Down more than 50 lbs from last May. Yesterday, I was talking with a co-worker about my band and how I've had to slow down my eating and how you have to CHEW CHEW CHEW your food because if you don't, food will get stuck and you will throw up. I told her (somewhat gloating) that I have not as of yet thrown up because of this. And while patting myself on the back for this achievement after almost 2 months with the band, I started to hear my stomach rumbling. I looked at the clock and noticed it was time for lunch (albeit a few minutes early). So, I decided to eat. I had a tuna salad wrap in the fridge, which I planned to eat the tuna and lettuce out of sparingly nibbling on the whole wheat wrap. I had forgotten that while talking with my co-worker, I had been sipping Water. So, I clearly did not wait 30 minutes after drinking before eating. I retrieved the wrap from the mini fridge all the while I could feel my stomach growling. So, at first opportunity, I tore into that tuna. I didn't chew well. I didn't avoid the wrap. I was an idiot. 10 seconds later I was hiccupping like crazy and sweating. 30 seconds later I was in the mens room saying hello to my lunch again. SInce my hubris was obviously the cause of my problem, I'm not asking for advice really. I humbly submit this to you all as a cautionary tale. I know what I did wrong. And I am sure it's not the last time I will make this mistake. From now on I have to bear in mind that past success is not a free pass to be stupid. I might forget I'm banded, but my band wont.

December Bandwagon Supporters

As I understand it an NSV is a non-scale victory. Things like getting a "hey you look great!" from a co-worker or simply fitting into clothes from years gone by. -

I had a rough weekend, followed by a NSV. So, I thought I'd share. In terms of roughness I am struggling a little with boundaries regarding the mushies phase of the diet. I probably ate something that were pushing it in terms of nutritional value. I chewed them pretty thoroughly 25-30 times a bite, but I knew they were things I shouldn't be eating yet or at all and still did. On the whole did I do myself any major harm in what I did? Probably not. Although it didn't feel great and although it wasn't a stuck food episode, my band definitely told me "hey! stop that! you can't eat like that!" I didn't eat a huge amount or really even stuff my face like I might have done in the past. My only real regret is that I should be more careful right now because I am healing still. And I don't want to strech my pouch or do anything that could cause me harm or affect my longterm success. My NSV is a nice one. I woke up this morning and had forgotten to put in a wash last night. So, I thought I'd check my closet for old clothes that might fit now. I grabbed a pair of pants that I haven't worn for almost 10 years. They fit! I ironed them and put them on, confirming that I have lost 4 inches off my waist and although I am not yet in my 40's.....my pant size is. That's a race I thought I would lose. I'm getting closer to being able to once again walk into a regular store and buy clothing. I haven't been able to do that in years. -

December 2012 --- Band Buddies Unite!

It took a few days post op for me to pass anything. That's totally normal I think. I think as long as you can pass gas...which they tell you should happen within 48 hrs, you should be fine. Sent from my iPad using LapBandTalk -
December 2012 --- Band Buddies Unite!

Hey Folks, I was banded on 12/4 in Essex Cty, NJ. I could really use a band buddy. I'm not having any issues or problems yet with the exception of a little soreness at the port incision site. I just started mushies yesterday. Never knew tuna salad with lowfat mayo could be so delicious. I hope all the Dec Bandsters are doing well. -Sheky -
So, for those banded on 12/4 how's it going? I'm sitting outside my surgeon's office waiting for my 1st post op visit. I'm hoping there aren't any issues since I am looking forward to moving on to mushies. I'll report back with my first weight loss totals soon after. Exciting! I've been wearing clothes that are 6-7 years old from before I was married that are 2-4 inches smaller along my waistline and have had to put two more notches in my belt already. I can't wait till I can properly exercise again. I hope everyone else is having a similar experience or better.

Pre-Made vs Whey Protein Powder
sheky17g replied to nicolemm's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think the first powder I tried was Protizyme Peanut Butter Cookie. After a week of liquid dieting, this was like a G D party in my mouth. The other flavors (strawberry, vanilla, choc) not so great. -

Oh and don't sweat the protein yet. You can usually start that 3 days or so out depending on the surgeon. -

That sounds about right. Try ice chips if you need something to hold in your mouth or even sugar free ice pops. Remember that you are swollen after surgery. So, even if you don't feel it with the pain meds... don't push it too much in volume. You're doing great...hang in there. -
The November 'band'wagon!
sheky17g replied to LadyLeigh2012's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was told that the Metformin I am taking is time release (Glumetza) and therefore could not be broken up. However my issue was more that I was swollen than anything else. I've been taking the same meds since day one without any issues.
