I'm 9 days post-op. I did not find the surgery painful. Sure there was soreness where the instruments were inserted but having had surgery before this surgery was no big deal. I have several co-workers who have recently had the surgery and also found that it was not painful. It's not comfortable but hey don't go into it expecting it to be. I walked twice the first night. Sip, sip, sip. I did get nauseated a couple of times but never threw up. Gas was uncomfortable but it passes. Know you went into this surgery for all of the right reasons, be compliant with your doctors orders. Relax and just be relieved that the surgery is over.

FEBRUARY SLEEVERS 2013....how you doing after you've been Sleeved
Johanna1955 replied to DivaNurse's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Well, I'm now 8 days post-op and I feel great. The first three days were rough but not intolerable by any means. I reminded myself that I did have major surgery. My energy level is not quite back to normal yet but I have no pain, no nausea. I am getting my Protein and fluids down but it's an all day process. I am so happy I did this for myself and will treasure this precious tool I've been given. Following all my post-op instructions to a T. Have lost 8 lbs since being home. Drain came out yesterday. Did not hurt a bit!!! Anxious to get past the 4 week Fluid stage so I can actually chew again but I do not have any head hunger that I had feared that I would. Cannot imagine going through this long process and surgery only to cheat, I feel like I've been given a gift. I'll be praying for you and your surgery soon -
What has your doctor told you to eat/or what not to eat over the next year?
Johanna1955 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Just wanting to compare. I just had surgery on Feb 12th. Feel like I'm doing well. Here's what my doctor has printed out for the first year. 400 to 600 calories per day No more than 15 carbs per day or 5 per meal No bread, rice, Pasta or noodles for a year (because of the carbs) No beef for a year. No diet soda ever again Only fat-free milk, yogurt, etc ever 60 to 80 grams of Protein per day 64 oz of fluids per day. What does your diet for the rest of your life look like? -

Thanks guys! I thought this was a very restricted diet. I believe that 1,000 calories a day should be fine and 60-80 of Protein and 30-45 of carbs. I so very much agree that this process is about learning how to eat normally and not a race to lose 100 lbs. I work full-time, on my feet, I feel like I need the energy. Besides such restricted carbohydrates worries me about my acid-base balance and kidney stones. They do a thousand or more surgeries a year. I cannot believe that every patient follows this very strict diet. I plan to stick to what you guys are doing. If it takes longer to lose weight, that's cool, as long as it goes down. Thanks Again -
Sugar-free popsciles have worked well for me. Also G2 and Campbells Chicken Noodle Soup minus the noodles and meat. I'm having trouble with water unless it's mixed with crushed ice. I was surprised the doctor let me go home on day four because I was only taking in about 20 oz at best per 24 hours. At home with better tasting liquids I have definitely been able to do better and the nausea seems to have disappated for now. I did have nausea while in the hospital. That feeling that your mouth is full of liquid but no actual vomiting. I'm 6 days post op and taking in about 45 oz.

FEBRUARY SLEEVERS 2013....how you doing after you've been Sleeved
Johanna1955 replied to DivaNurse's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Tomorrow is my surgery date. I am ready. I've been ready almost since I've started this process. I am sick of huffing up the stairs, having trouble with socks and shoes. Had my first elevated A1C a couple of months ago but all fasting blood sugars are still ok. Had my first elevated cholesterol level several months ago. My knees have been bothering me progressively worse over the past year. I learned that my stress incontinence is as bad as it is because of my weight. My husband says I snore. Yes I am ready! I am doing this for my health, for my life. The nice side effect will be the loss of weight and nicer clothes but not my reason for doing it. Have found myself to be a little tearful the past couple of days. I'm not afraid of surgery. I think it's just the major change coming. Could be the pre-op liquid diet. LOL. 0800 tomorrow morning my life will begin to change for the better. -
The closer to my date, the scareder I am.
Johanna1955 replied to Rycherchick's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think the reason we are all so nervous is partly because this is a voluntary surgery. We chose to have this surgery done. It's not as though the doctor has said your appendix has to come out and suddenly we are in the hospital. I am looking at this surgery as a medical necessity and not a voluntary surgery because if I don't have it, I will end up with diabetes, heart disease, stroke, or other co-morbidilty. There's no more risk in this surgery than there is in a laproscopic choly (gall bladder) but it's such a life changing surgery, requiring months of recovery (learning to eat again) that we think of it being a more difficult surgery for the surgeon but it's actually very routine. The death rate is less than 1/10 th of 1%. I like the odds, especially compared to the risks involved with remaining obese. But I'm admit, I am getting nervous too! -

how did your EGD go?
Johanna1955 replied to rockdutchess82's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have always been scared to death to have an EGD or colonoscopy. I decided a month ago to put my big girl panties on and have both. They are not required by my surgeon but I decided I didn't want to go to surgery only to find out I had something wrong. The IV was no big deal. They used a local to numb me first with all 4 sticks and I hardly felt anything. I went into the endo suite on the stretcher, the anesthesiologist said "goodnight" I woke up in recovery. No pain, no discomfort, nothing, zip, nada. So so glad I did it!!!! Doctor said everything looked great and I'll see you in ten years. He also said, "hey I wouldn't have a gastric bypass but the gastric sleeve is a no-brainer" -

Wow, I'm glad I saw this thread. My surgery date is Feb 12th. I couldn't wait for the date to get here. I kept saying I'm ready, I'm ready to have surgery today! but now that I have my pre-op appointment on Tuesday I'm getting nervous. I thought today could I possibly back out? No, I need to do this for myself and my family. I am telling myself, God brought me to this and he'll get me through it. We'll all be fine and happy we did it and for all the right reasons. -
Best Tasting Clear Liquids 2 weeks Post Op?
Johanna1955 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have a surgery date! Feb 12th! I want to start getting things together. I understand that 2 weeks post-op the only food allowed is clear liquids and water. Can anyone reccomend a decent tasting clear liquid? While on the subject...what do you think is the best tasting liquid whey protein? I plan on mixing mine with Almond Milk. My surgeon says to use liquid protein and water only for 10 days pre-op! another surgeon in the same practice says use liquid protein and water only 2 days pre-op and his patients do just as well. I think 10 days is obsessive? Also, my surgeon says crush pills for one year, the other surgeon says with gastric sleeve no reason to crush meds at all. They are so opposite! So what are the best tasting clean and full protein drinks? Thanks! -

Telling Your Boss Your Having Surgery..
Johanna1955 replied to MK1986's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I plan to be honest and tell my employer exactly what I'm having done and why. If I lose weight I'll be a happier employee. I have problems with my knees, get tired quicker than my co-workers and certainly don't move as fast as they do. My blood pressure will go down, sleep apnea will go away giving me a better nights sleep, etc, etc. There have been several employees who have had WLS and they have been very supportive. I feel fortunate that I don't have to worry. I've experienced being out of a job and I never want to experience that again. I think irregardless, honesty is the best policy. Your weight loss will show and they will know. Be honest!
