Roll Call...All having a Revision From Band to RNY Come on In
Brittwoman posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Just getting this forum started  If you've had a revision come on in  -
1st off ANY surgery has it's inherant risk (I work in the PACU so I see it 1st hand) I had a revision because AFTER 3 1/2 years with the band, I had a slip and the start of erotion. I also developed a severe case of esophagitis and GERD. At first I wanted another band, but; after alot of soul searching and the fact that it could slip again and I needed staples in my stomach to repair the damage done by the band, it was a no brainer to revise to RNY. As far as dumping goes, yes I do and I'm quite happy I do. Remember WLS fixes the stomach and NOT the brain, but; once you experience dumping you tend to stay AWAY from high sugar and high fat foods because dumping is not pleasant at all.

Having been on both sides of the fence (lap band and now RNY) I definately recommend the RNY. The fact that people say they get the lap band because it's a "less risky" surgery are misinformed. Every SURGERY has it's own set of risk. Also when people tell you it's less invasive, well guess what... you're still being opened up laproscopically weather it be for banding or RNY, you still have 5 to 6 lap openings in your belly and yes with both surgeries they "pump" you up with CO2. I suggest you do your research, attended local support groups BEFORE you have surgery and talk to people who have used the surgeon you're planning on using and ask them their opinion. Best of luck in your decision!

Roll Call...All having a Revision From Band to RNY Come on In

I have to say it works very well if you follow the rules which aren't that much different than band rules. The best part of my revision is no more pb'ing and slimming. -
I was back at school 1 week post-op and back to work in 3 weeks. I also want to say that I was back to the gym 2 weeks post-op with the blessing of my surgeon. My recovery went "textbook" perfect!

Thread starter here :tongue2: Just an update on me... I'm doing GREAT  I've been at goal for months now, just finished my 1st semester of nursing school, feel WONDERFUL  all my labs are text book PERFECT:thumbup: and the best part...I wear a size 8 jeans, and a SMALL top :der: Life sure is great on the RNY revision side:biggrin: -
Having my revision to RNY from Lapband was the best thing I ever did for myself!!! Life is much more easier with the RNY. I have not vomited or slimed once since my revision, I made it to goal in 1 year and all my labs are text book perfect. I also love the fact that there is no maintaence, by that I mean no fills or unfills and BTW most insurance does NOT cover fills and unfills so I'm saving alot of $$$$ with the RNY

I orginally was banded 1/9/04 with the Inamed 4cc band, but; after 3.5 years with that band I had a serious slip and erosion. I had to have the band removed in an emergency procedure and decided I did NOT want to be re-banded and I went for a revision to RNY. Today I am almost at goal, VERY happy, and most important of all VERY HEALTHY!!! My new obcession is bike riding and I participate in long distance rides, usually 50 miles and I'm training for my 1st century ride in September

I had a slip with erosion....had the thing removed...revised to RNY 2 months later and VERY happy  My signature says it all

swelling after lap-band removal surgery
Brittwoman replied to ifonly's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Is your MD aware that you're "turning" yellow? If your skin and eyes are turning yellow it is a sign of liver troubles and you should call your MD immediately!!!!! It's nothing that you should be posting about on a message board and waiting for a diagnois. Keep us posted and PLEASE call your MD ASAP!!! -
Revision Scheduled for July - AGB to RNY
Brittwoman replied to jillagin2000's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
So sorry for replying so late to your thread...finals in school the last 2 weeks kept me busy!! Anyway..I'm 7.5 months post-op from a Lap Band to RNY revision and VERY happy :sneaky: As of today I'm down 131lbs total, 60 lbs since revision and am at 93% EWL, so I'm closing in on 100% EWL :leaving: You're not alone and you won't be sorry for going the RNY route. In thinking about my total WLS journey, I've come to the conclusion that the band was good for awhile, got me down in weight, but then troubles started (slip and erotion) and it just prepared me for my final and LAST WLS event!! Any questions feel free to PM me!! Jane -
swelling after lap-band removal surgery
Brittwoman replied to ifonly's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I was a bit horrified at the amount of swelling I had when I had to have my band removed. I looked about 7 months pregnant and thought oh no...my nice flat tummy (achieved with abdominalplasty) was going to be a thing of the past :sneaky: But here I sit 10 months post emergency removal of my band and 7 months post RNY revision and my stomach is as flat as a board :leaving: So I was VERY lucky that things returned to normal!! -
I took a week off from work after my removal and that was mainly because I had a large amount of abdominal swelling ( I looked about 7 months pregnant!) I had a small amount of pain from the removal, but; the best part was that my reflux was gone 72 hours after removal!!!

lap bander wants gastric bypass ins. pay?
Brittwoman replied to brandyII's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I was approved for my revison from band to RNY. I had to have my band removed after 3 1/2 years due to a slip and erotion I have to mention that the insurance company made me do ALL of the testing all over again, just like a "newbie". My BMI @ the time of my revision was 36 and I had only 1 comorbidity...asthma. Best of luck to you on whatever you decide to do! -
How Did You Feel Physically After Lap Band Removal
Brittwoman replied to Libralin's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
When I had my band removed 6 months ago, the surgeon made 4 small incisions into my abdomin. I was in the OR for approx 2hr for the removal because I had some erotion damage that had to be repaired with my removal. As far as post-op pain, it was VERY minimal. Tylenol worked great for me :biggrin2: The worse part was the swelling...I looked about 7 months pregnant for about 3 weeks!! But it did go down. Just alittle side note, my reflux was totally gone 72 hours post-op!! I did manage to still have some restriction for about 1 month post removal , but slowly over time I was able to consume more food then I was used to having been banded for over 3 1/2 years :crying: -
Well on Monday 7/30/07 @ 7:30 am my band is officially leaving me! I found out on 6/1/07 that I had a slip with some errosion and was trying to hold out for my insurance to cover a revision from Lap Band to RNY, but my stomach will not let me wait any longer. The reflux is so bad and the esophogitis is really painful even being on 3 different meds to try and help settle things for a bit (nexium, carafate, and reglan). My paperwork went in this afternoon for my revision surgery and it was a total joy to have to do EVERY little thing over from scratch again (cardio, psych eval, pulmonary, dietary, support group, endoscopy, colonoscopy, abdominal sono and primary care MD). So unfortunately I'm going to have 2 surgeries now :car: I'll probably have the RNY revision after 8/27 when I get my daughter settled into her freshman year at college. So this is my tale of woe for now Jane
-
I'm doing GREAT since my removal :biggrin1: My esophagitis has completely healed and my reflux is a thing of the past thank goodness Now as far as my revision is concerned....I'm down 34lbs since my revision to RNY on 10/1/07 and I feel GREAT I'm now officially ONLY 33 lbs away from my personal goal!!! I also want to add that since I began my WLS journey with my lap band I'm down a total of 105 lbs!!!

"Muffin Top" Is that the "new" way to say that your band has slipped A slipped band is when your stomach prolaspes OVER the top of your band so I guess it sort of does look like a "muffin top"

2nd slippage, considering bypass
Brittwoman replied to Shewhoknits's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
My insurance covered my revision 100%, but; I had to do the "MD run" as I like to call it again. That means, psych eval, Nut, cardiologist, pulmonary, and primary MD. I was a "light weight" too...my BMI at day of surgery was 35.2 -
2nd slippage, considering bypass
Brittwoman replied to Shewhoknits's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I'm 2 months post-op with a revison from lap band to RNY and in all honesty, it's not as "evil" (RNY) as people keep saying it is. I had my lap band for 3 1/2 years before it started giving me problems (slip with some erotion) Everyone says go with the VSG, but remember...you're having 3/4 of you stomach removed and over 300 staples placed there. Also as far as DS...great procedure...but the amount of supplements you have to take is incredible. Now as far as RNY..I only have to take 1 multi vitamin, calcium, and my iron supplement...same EXACT stuff I took with my lap band. As far as diet...basically the SAME as lap band....nothing with more then 14 grams of carbs per serving and no more than 7 grams of sugar. Also have to get in that 60 - 70 grams of protein. My 6 week post-op labs were PERFECT, text book PERFECT to be exact. It's a VERY personal decision on which WLS is going to work for you, so in all honestly do your research and do what you feel is right for YOU and not what people on message boards post is the BEST because what works for one might not work for all! Also one last thing...dumping is NOT a horrible thing, I look at it as a POSTIVE thing. It helps me and countless other people stay on track to avoid high sugar, fried, and fatty foods :biggrin1: -
After suffering from a slipped band with some erotion I had my band removed and a revision to RNY. I was kind of sorry to lose my band, but the hell it put me through after being my best friend for over 3 years was more then I could bear. Now as far as RNY, it's really not as "evil" as some people make it out to be. The best part is that I have NO more reflux, PB'ing is just a bad memory, and NO more fills and unfills in my life anymore I'm also happy to report that I'm a member of the century club again!!!

Link between post op diet and band slippage
Brittwoman replied to Beka's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I followed my surgeons "6 Rules" and we're both still scratching our heads as to why the slipped happened! Jane -
It sounds like your anesthesiologist did your reversal alittle to soon or you just woke up very quickly from your reversal and you heard everything going on in the OR room as they were getting ready to get you off the OR table and back on the strecher. That must have been a terrible experience for you and you should let your surgeon know and I would also let the anesthesiologist know.

Curious About Band Size & Slipped Band
Brittwoman replied to NJChick's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I HAD what I like to call the "1st generation" Inamed 4cc band. I had a slip with erotion several months ago (6/1/07 discovered with Upper GI series), had emergency removal surgery(7/30/07), and eventually had a revision to RNY on 10/1/07 :biggrin1: -
When I had my band removed, my surgeon told me to eat soft foods for 1 week and then back to normal. My surgeon had to do some repair work to my stomach with staples because I had some erotion with my slip....hence the soft foods for a week.
